The Turians mouth wouldn't be able to form a seal and they have scaly skin. There is a reason mammals are the only lineage that have evolved milk glands. Not only that, large breasts are a distinctly *human* character. When is the last time you saw a chimp with a huge rack?

While I agree that ****** on a bird are kind on silly, I think we are still mostly OK compared to that.
lol how this can not be a piece of art? Is Geralt acting out of character? Is this breaking the narrative? Killing the story? Just imagine same scene in underwear.... ugh!

Breasts on an alien would only make sense if the infant form can suck, and the species has porous secretory skin; mammary glands are likely modified sweat glands. Turians have stiff lips, open cheeks, and very sharp reptilian teeth, so putting breasts on the females makes zero sense -- none. Bioware, your fans are not simpletons; many of them, including myself, like this IP because it's the closest thing we have to an interactive science fiction novel i.e, it's not Star Trek/Star Wars. Furthermore, the video game industry already panders too much to teenage boys. It's bad enough that Miranda's digital butt gets shoved in my face throughout the game without d-cup mammary glands being placed on female dinosaur people.
And I suppose you know exactly what a infant Turian looks like right?
Turians are only reptilian in design. NOT in function.

Here's a better question: Why are so many alien species humanoid? Even though from what I remember reading, aliens are more likely to be arthropod-like.
OMG LAZY BIOWARE USING HUMAN STANDARDS TO DEFINE FICTIONAL ALIEN SPECIES HOW DARE THEY?
That's actually easier to forgive than human breasts on a scaly creature with an unsealable mouth. Bilateral symmetry and a fairly humanoid shape may be a more efficient form for a large brained tool using creature. We won't know until we have a sample size that is larger than one. As of now, we are the only extant species that we know of with our level of tool use and intelligence. Our form could be very rare, or it may be quite common; we just don't know yet. However, it's reasonable not to expect milky glands to evolve on a scaly creature with no cheeks and reptilian lips.
The good news is that her "boobs" may just be the edges of her ripbage and puffy clothing... one can hope at least.

I've wondered that myself. Why do Krogans look like giant lizards, Salarians like frogs, why do Asari look 99.9999% human and are all-females and lesbians? Obvious reason is obvious I think.

How can we say that when we have never seen a Turian boob before? Maybe Turian boobs function differently than human boobs, maybe they have a long tube in place of nipples that go down the infant's throat, or something. the problem here, is that we are talking about an alien species, but assuming the breasts of the said alien species function exactly as human breasts do.

Until we actually discover real sapient alien life, or they discover us, there is no way to know how diverse sapient, tool using aliens would be. It could be analogous to how dolphins, icthyosaurs, mosasaurs, sharks, and marine crocs have all evolved the same basic body plan due to their similar modes of survival. Species from different evolutionary lineages may tend to converge on the same body plan when they evolve towards sapience, or the opposite could be true; we simply can't say yet.

It depends on how realistic they want their aliens to be. A common fallacy is that just because something is alien, you can stick any kind of organ you want on it while waving your hands saying, "it's an alien!". What did those "nipple tubes" evolve from? What would be the intermediary structure that would lead to such an organ? As an example, the most primitive mammals on Earth, the monotremes, don't even have nipples; they just have porous skin that secretes milk. Mammary glands evolved from simple modified sweat/oil glands, and than gradually evolved into more complex organs. It seems as though they would need to evolve porous skin and then nipples before you get *flexible nipple tubes that travel down an infants throat. Of course, a SF writer can do whatever he wants, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

Some people, myself included, care about the I.P. art direction. The overall tone of the series has been more realistic than series such as Star Wars and Star Trek, but throwing boobs on on alien simply because it's female makes them seem less alien and consequently, less interesting -- to me at least. I would be more impressed if they put boobs on a male alien, but we all know why they wouldn't do that.

As I said in the other thread-
"Seriously people, bumps on chest=/=boobs. They could be anything from plates, to an odd ribcage formation that only females Turians have that is prominent enough to be visible externally, to vestigial organs of a time when a common ancestor of Turians had boobs but are nothing but useless things that serve no purpose or sexual characteristic, to bumps that hold nourishment much like Krogan humps.
In short, stop freaking out. If you see them having their own physics and bounce in-game, then you might have a case. Until then, you're just assuming they're breasts because they look similar to what breasts look like on humans when viewed through clothing."
Fact is, we won't know and can't know what they are unless she says herself or goes and takes her upper clothes off for some off the wall reason just to show they're not boobs and Bioware fooled you all.

Sorry but Mass Effect has always had this. In fact all media has always had this. Even children's cartoons with anthropomorphic animals have this too with subtle breasts, feminine hips, etc when portraying female non-human characters. Are they oversexualizing the charcters and being sexist? I think not. It's just a convention that's not going away anytime soon This is how it has always been and this is how it will always be.

No problem, I'm assuming anything anyone says is their opinion. (thumbs up)xsdob wrote...
Actually most of that was just venting and expressing my opinion on the subject, not really trying to argue against anything.
It's true that vestigial traits exist. It would however be odd to design a creature with a prominent vestigial (unecessary) trait out front, with no explanation, and count on the viewer to guess or interperet it as a vestigial trait. Good design explains itself.xsdob wrote...
To me, such an explination would easily suffice, becasue there are many creatures on this planet who, even after millions of years, have redundant and purposless traits or parts to them simply for the fact that screening it out of the genetic code is hard to do, espeically without outside intervention.
Birds are actually warm-blooded, too. And there are as you said, examples of viviparity in both mammals and non-mammals. Mammals might have more examples, but a variety of vivparous species are non-mammalian, too. You're right to say that we can't count on these traits to point to turians as mammal-analogues or not.xsdob wrote...
(A spirited assertion that turians are mammalian or mammalish due to traits of viviparity and warm-bloodedness)
But there are also very unambiguously turian traits - the carapace, the stiff-lipped, hole-cheeked mouths - that make breastfeeding very... unlikely.
For what it's worth, when people point out that turians are repto-birdish (and be fair, they really do mostly have repto-birdish looking features), that's not to try to say that human-style breasts are impossible because EARTH-LAWS, just that it seems... out of place. When any design is made from a majority of one type of element, and then something very different is added, it's just jarring. Sort of like having a room decorated in soft pastel colors, lacy curtains, antiques on the shelf, maybe an old piano and crown moulding... and right in the middle is a giant purple and green lava lamp. People are gonna wonder about the lava lamp, even though there's no law that says it can't be there.
Didn't see a lot to contend on the issue. I've said it before (albeit not here) that I like her cranial design just fine. The carapace up top is a good way to reconcile the Dark Horse bald look while making sense for radiation protection. The mandibles are a fun divergence. Not terribly keen on her narrow neck or how her head's so much shallower front to back than a male's, but that's not a terrible sticking point.Overall it's decent and I have no real problems with it.xsdob wrote...
Also, I'm annoyed that the poster completly ignores the many other differences that nyreen has from other turians and just focus's on her could or could not exist boobs. (Claims of sexism)
I've been sticking to the mammary issue because I'm weary of that old trope in female character design and disappointed that it's still happening, and some of the lengths being taken to defend them are just...
Hmmm.pirate1802 wrote...

Children don't understand non-Human sexual dimorphism. It's easy to 'lie' to them. Of course the cartoonists for the Lion King didn't have to tack boobs or cosmetics or whatever onto the females, they made them accuratly smaller than the males and lack the large mane.

That's like simply telling someone who's getting bullied "welcome to school!" instead of trying to take action against it. Such defeatist talk is frankly disgusting.
So, cliches that have been around a long time should just be accepted? Movies about, say, aliens invading the Earth and kicking our asses without a hitch until ****in' Bacteria come to our rescue should just be rehashed and watched every time they're made? Tropes must be like Borg or something, because apparently resistance is futile!
If you don't question and disaprove of those things, then you're basically throwing in the towel as the 'media' continues to think you're stupid, gullible, and/or ignorant while they keep pumping out their tired bull****. When you do, however, you show them that you aren't satisfied with the stereotypes anymore and they should become more creative.
