Hello All,

I am starting to work on a mod (Human Commoner) and I was wondering about the distances between the various areas in Fereldan. Specifically, I was wondering how many miles are there between Lake Calenhad and Lothering was as well as the distance between Ostagar and Lothering.

Also is there a map with a legend somewhere online? I know the Dragon Age wiki has one, but I didn't see a legend attached to it and so it doesn't do me much good.

Thanks,
Joseph

Difficult to say as there is no legend as far as I know. A few clues give hints at distance. From Redcliff to the Tower is about a day according to Teagen. From experience you can hike upwards of 30-35 miles a in about a 12-14 hour span if you travel light, push hard, and it's easy terrain. While the word day can have a few meanings, I'll assume he means straight through considering the direness of the situation, also assuming they'll be quicker travelers then myself. So maybe 70-90 miles between Redcliff and the tower. Get a ruler, measure it, and you have a estimated legend.

One day? Wow... Ferelden is a lot smaller than I thought, especially considering the characters have to go around Lake Calenhad. I was assuming longer distances because of all the references to "one year after Ostagar" by Gwynne and in the Dwarven Noble background. Thanks for the unexpected, but enlightening answer.

Yeah, Bioware kind of kicked the whole time & distance thing in the nuts and left it on the ground. I believe I remember someone saying that Thedas itself is roughly the size of the UK, who the hell said that though I can't remember but that would mean Fereldan is pretty small.

It is about 83 miles (by air, 101 by road) from Lake Calenhad to Lothering and 85 miles (by air, 97 by road) from Lothering to Ostagar.

So why would it then be mentioned that Weisshaupt in Orlais would be "a thousand miles", or something to that effect, away? Just a figure of speech?

You know people, they tend to exaggerate. Since there are no horses, or at least not as usual mean of transport, and traveling is done on foot 20 miles is a long way, then 100 seems as very far away .. "a thousand miles".

Weisshaupt is not in Orlais, it is far far away in the anderfels. here is a map to help.

I see... I think I'll take the map distances over the story-based travel times. I'll just chalk up the "one day" from Redcliff to the Circle of Mages as a dialogue goof (unless Teagan was meaning by boat, which I guess could be just a day).

Thanks,

Joseph

Well, I think in one of the dialogues it is mentioned that it takes 1 day to get to the Circle Tower from Redcliffe (during the Connor dialogue). Then they mention later in the game that you have to 'move quickly' to get to Denerim from Redclfife in 2 days. So that is a good basis to start.

Maybe your party uses Griffons offscreen?

As Wynne would say "Gah, it's like talking to a child..."

Well a 'day' from Redcliff to the Circle Tower wouldn't be that exaggerated, considering they are on a lake with sail boats. Its just a discrepancy due to the fact it shows you walking that same distance in between the two places.

The dragon age wiki says that Thedas is actually the size of Europe. Simce there are only 10 countries, Ferelden would be pretty big actually.

That's just what it means. One day by boat.

Well another mention of the distances in dialog is when Dagna the Dwarven wannabe mage says something like "You can't have been to the cirlce tower yet it takes two weeks and four days to reach"... or something along them lines..... so Ferelden is BIG.

I believe Bann Teagan ment travel to the circle would take one day by boat.

Hey I remember this thread. Ah how time flies, I was such a stud back in the day.

Anyways, perhaps if everyone at Bioware failed geography or a day, week, ect. are much longer in Thedas. Honestly there are just far to many inconsistencies to really make a solid and accurate measurement. Maybe it is the size of Europe, if that is what Team Bioware is going with then who is to argue.

I can't wait to see future games branch out across that map.  We got Ferelden in DA:O, we'll play Orlais in DA:O - Awakenings, what do you think is the likely area for Bioware to focus on in DA2?  The Tevinter Imperium, Nevarra, Antiva, or the Anderfels?  Maybe something else?

Juts had the Dagan dialogue now and can confirm she says it is two weeks and 4 days from Orzammar to the Circle Tower

I couldn't find the thread where I was talking about this earlier, so I'll post here. I just bought the boxed roleplaying game, and the foldout map of Ferelden that it comes with has a scale. The distance from Denerim to Lake Calenhad Docks as the crow flies is about 192 miles. The distance from Ostagar to Lothering is about 60 miles.

gotta say this: in The Calling, it is mentioned that it takes Maric and the Wardens about 2 weeks plus a few days to travel by HORSE from denerim to what was in The stolen throne described as about 2 to 3 days or so, don't remember exactly anymore, ride south-east of West hill, with Genevieve pushing the horses in winter. so i'd say that comes down to about 40 miles per day, meaning the distance between denerim and west hill is well over 500 miles, more like going on 600.

and as to it taking 2 days to get to denerim: riordan says the HORDE will reach denerim in 2 days, never is it mentioned that the warden and allies make it in that time. Remember the Horde first has to breach denerim's walls etc.

so my guess is that Ferelden is about the size of the old Holy roman empire, if not bigger.
