I don't recall playing anything new worth remembering or I deem good this year. So I guess it will be TW2's Enhanced Edition, even though I already played the vanilla several times.

EDIT: on another note, I did play through the whole Legacy of Kain series for the first time earlier this year. It's fantastic, few games nowadays can rival it in terms of story imo.

Haven't you tried Dishonored?

No, nor do I plan to. Not in the mood lately.

Hmmm...too many to name just one.

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die edition
XCOM: Enemy Unknown
FTL
The Walking Dead
Crusader Kings II

All of those games are great in their own right. The Walking Dead is fantastic in terms of narrative and getting strong emotions out of you despite not having much in the way of gameplay. But then FTL, XCOM and Crusader Kings are amazing when it comes to emergent narrative. And Dark Souls is pretty amazing in terms of the art design and how rewarding and challenging the combat is. I really need to put more time into CK2 though.

Then older games that didn't come out this year that I only played for the first time this year:
Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale
The New Vegas DLC
Arkham City

So far, it's Dragon's Dogma.

But I did had my eyes on Dishonored for a while..but I can't find the time to actually play it yet.

Best 3.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown.
Guild Wars 2.
Witcher 2: Enhanced Edition.

EDIT: I would really like to add Dark Souls: Prepare to Die here but I can't ignore the horrendous port.

Assassin's Creed 3 - Awesome. Despite the bugs and overall lack of polish, this is the best entry in the series yet. The naval battles alone make it a winner for me. As for the ending, it's no worse than the endings of previous entries in the series.

The Witcher 2 Enhanced Edition - The game itself is great enough, but the extra goodies CD Projeckt has put in for us console gamers is a treat in itself. After the dissappointment that is ME3, this game more than satisfied my RPG needs.

NBA 2K13 - What a big improvement gameplay wise from last year. I only wish they hadn't nerfed the Legends mode, but this is still a fantastic sports game.

I don't know. There were a lot of decent games and a few good games, but none that really jump out at me as my favorite. Virtue's Last Reward is the only game in recent memory that encroached on my sleep, so that, I guess.

Really. It's a hard question to answer. There were a lot of highly anticipated games but they really didn't pan out as great games. Which makes picking one really hard.

...

...Spec Ops: The Line deserves a lot of praise for doing things I didn't think a game would tackle. It was a really good story and decent shooter gameplay.

And Assassin's Creed 3 really shines with its Connor story (especially mid-way to near the end). But the Desmond stuff isn't so good. The gameplay's funner than the other AC games and I liked the time period. It's a contender for the top spot too.

...

...But.... I don't want to give it to Mass Effect 3... but I get the feeling that Mass Effect 3 would be my actual final choice in best game of this year. Of course I haven't played Dishonored and would probably like it. Or XCOM.

I have yet to get AC3, and it will probablty be a few months before I do, so undoubtedly Dragon's Dogma for 2012.

For the excellent and fun combat, and for my Arisen. If you could only see my Arisen, you'd know why. ;)

It isn't a terribly long game. I was able to complete my last run in one sitting (although admittedly I was powering through it).

Dragon's dogma
followed by Tales of Graces F (release in Europe [where I live] in 2012)
and Kindom of Amular:reckoning
...though I'm such a compulsive buyer I'm struggling to find time to play many of the (over 40) games I've bought...got to give XCOM a try...

Took me over 40 hours to finish it on Very Hard setting, but I disabled all the markers, so I had to spend a lot of time exploring to figure out where to go for each level. Also died and reloaded a lot.

The Walking Dead or Max Payne 3.

Enjoyed Diablo 3 and Trials Evolution too. The only other ones I've played are ME3 (which didn't blow me away, but I blame franchise fatigue more than anything) and SSX (disappointing).

Still yet to play Dragon's Dogma, Sleeping Dogs and Dishonored, which may change my decision.

Dishonored, easily.

I've liked The Walking Dead too, but... how do I say this... it doesn't really seem like a game. More like a movie, albeit a very good one.

I know what you mean about TWD, it seems weird nominating a game with so little actual gameplay. For me though it's among the most enjoyable experiences in gaming I've had this year and IMO possibly the least flawed at what it's trying to do.

Not many games have such a far-reaching sense of tough decisions and meaningful consequences, nor characters you get so invested in, especially in so few hours.

That's a great description.
