Hi guys, I'm going to play through Baldur's Gate I and II WITHOUT and mods and here are the parties and main character I'm thinking of.

For role-playing purposes, my BG I character and party will be solo-class as follows:
Me - Fighter, Dynaheir, Minsc, Branwen, Imoen, Ajantis

Here's where my dilemma starts. When I start BG II I'm going to pick a fighter kit and then dual-class later. I'm down to two choices based on my party as well.

1. Me - Kensai/Mage, Anomen, Keldorn, Imoen, Minsc, Jaheira
2. Me - Berserker/Cleric, Aerie, Keldorn, Imoen, Minsc, Jaheira

As you can see, the party is similar with the exception of Anomen and Aerie. Remember, role-playing plays a big part in my choice, so please don't bash either build (I already know how biased people are towards Berserker/Mage :D). I'd like to know what experiences people had with both builds, if any, as well as opinions on the two different NPCs, playing style and romance wise as it might influence the gender pick.

Any comments are appreciated, thanks.

Hmm, if I were to choose Kensai while importing in BG II, how will I have to progress through BG I in order to dual-wield katanas later?

If you're playing vanilla the weapon proficiency system is different in BG1 and BG2 - so you should just choose whatever you want in BG2 irrespective of what you used in BG1. If you want to choose the nearest equivalent in BG1 for role-playing reasons then go for large swords.

I see, I guess I'm not understanding the way importing existing characters works. Would the existing fighter keep his proficiencies but get additional points to spend when importing in a new BG II game? My fighter will be lvl 7 at the beginning of BG II, meaning 6 points to spend. Shouldn't I save some these points to spend at the beginning of BG II or does it not work that way?

And yes, I'll be doing both vanilla.

No need to save anything as you will, in effect, re-make him at the start of BG2.

p.s. I'd go with 2, the Berserker/Cleric, with Aerie because she has a special role-playing story with Minsc and IMO taking Anomen is just not worth it!

So I'll be able to redistribute the used proficiency points in BG2? Thanks for the vote ussnorway, was kind of leaning towards kensai/mage but I'm reconsidering :)

Personally, I would go with a Paladin. Cavalier to be exact. The bonuses and immunities are great in the first game and with high Charisma you can be the party face plus get discount at the shops in all games. Plus, with the canon party you can use Carsormyr.
Even if you don't use EasyTutu/Trilogy or the Enhanced Edition, vanilla Paladin is awesome.
Sure, Keldorn can use it but I am not a fan of Inquisitors. They are tricky and their dispel can ruin your own buffs if you miscalculate it.

It just seems more heroic and fitting if you were the paragon of good and leader with the party you will take. Why choose other Paladins to lead, when you can be the hero and better leader? But that's just me.

Though I think three mages (Kensai/Mage, Imoen, Aerie) or three priests (Berserker/Cleric, Jaheira, Aerie) is kind of an overkill.

For a more balanced approach, I suggest being a Paladin with Minsc, Aerie, Jaheira, Imoen and maybe Valygar or anyone you want.
That way you have two tanks (you and Minsc), two priests (Jaheira, Aerie), two mages (Imoen, Aerie) and one extra. Valygar can be both a two-handed back-stabber/scout with Katanas and an archer, with spells. Amazing utility.

If you don't want to be a Paladin, then being a Berserker/Cleric is better, more balanced and makes more sense, RP-wise. Like being a battlepriest of Tempus.

With three mages, you will need to find three copies of scrolls for each and every spell. Also the Kensai is very hard to survive in the first game. Crappy AC and lack of Katanas if you want to dual them. Unless you Shadowkeep them. BG1 is all about survival.

Also, I think that being a vanilla Fighter is well, boring in the first game, in my opinion. Khalid/Minsc/Jaheira can do the tanking/archery. And you won't reach Grandmastery anyway.

BG1 - BG2 standard export/import allows;
- Fighter class selection to kits, e.g. to fighter / berserker / wizard slayer / kensai.
- Removal of existing weapon proficiencies and selection of new ones. So choose what you want in BG1 and choose what you want in BG2, they can either be similar or completely different.

Hard to say much more without going into spoilers or knowing if you've played BG2 before. Perhaps;

Who you were thinking of romancing in BG2 (romance doesn't feature in unmodded BG1).
- Male protaganist; Your first party has 1 female to romance, 2nd has a choice of 2.
- Female protaganist; Your first party has 1 male to romance, 2nd is going to be a lonely life.

What level were you thinking of dual-classing.
- Too early and you'll never have a decent fighter. Too later and you'll spend most of the game as 2 single classes then potentially be a supporting act to the rest of the party.
- You need to consider what proficiencies are important when dualled as re-selecting quarterstaff for example would mean losing a point once the fighter class re-activates (3+1 = 3 not 4 in this situation).
- Your fighter proficiencies won't be available until dual-class re-activates. e.g. mage can't use katana until the mage level exceeds the fighter level.

Aerie vs Anomen. She is a walking spellbook, if you spent the time buffing her before each battle she can carry the game for you but if you just plan on light buffs she's better in a caster/ranged role. Anomen is more suited to combat with fewer buffs but there will be times that he is vulnerable. Either can be played in a variety of ways though.

General party composition. Are you assuming your selected BG2 party are available for the entie game. You may need to consider having stand-ins or permanent replacements.
- Other NPC's are needed to activate 1 or 2 quests. e.g. the mage stronghold if you went kensai / mage and couldn't role play the alternate way of stating it. The fighter stronghold has no such constraint but I'd have thought the mage one would be better for that character.
- Some NPC's may temporarily be unavailable due to circumstances outside their control. The length of absence can go from short (something like 1 rest) to several chapters and depend on what order you do things.
- Some NPC's have conversations options that see them leave forever. Could challenge your role play in dialogue.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Luminus, the paladin seems like a good choice as it would unable me to use both Anomen and Aerie in BG II. I'm just wondering how you spent the proficiency points since the Paladin is restricted to proficient levels.

Again, using three priests (Aerie/Jaheira/Anomen) is kind of an overkill for me. But not bad at all. Better than having three mages.
If you make a Paladin, you can have Lay on Hands plus getting some low level priest spells. So in a way you will have 3.5 priests which are more than enough.
Make sure to do Anomen's quest. It will improve him quite a bit, I heard. Both character and gameplay-wise.

For proficiency points, in the first game, put them in the ones that let you use Longswords and Bastard Swords. Go with a shield. Don't bother with two-handed swords in the first game. Leave that to Minsc.

For the second game, put them in Longsword, because you will be the only one that can use them with that party, and Two-Handed Swords and Two-Handed Style.
There's a two-handed sword in BG2 that only Paladins can use. It's easy to find but hard to get. Don't want to go into spoilers. But it's absolutely worth it.
That way, you can switch from a sword and shield to more offense.

Also, in my game I put them in Flails also but Anomen can use those for you. Maybe Maces/Warhammers or anything you want.

Personally, I like Aerie with a Paladin as she is romanceable and is huge utility. Though, you can romance Jaheira instead or Viconia.
A general rule of thumb I have, is to have two of everything, except Thieves.
For example, have two tanks, two priests, two mages, maybe two archers and one thief.

Though, Haer'Dalis can focus on the Pick Pocket skill while Imoen/Yoshimo focus on traps and locks.
Stealth is secondary as it's useful mostly if the character can backstab with it, like Yoshimo or Valygar. And you can use spells or potions for it.

I have not played with Anomen and Haer'Dalis so I cannot tell you much about them. Theoretically, HD fills the mage slot but still a pure mage is better. I believe Bards cannot reach higher than 7th level spells or something like that. Also Blades get a penalty to Pick Pocket, right?

Don't want to go into spoiler land but you will want a mage other than Imoen in BG2. Aerie or Nalia can fill that role better than HD, I think.

Also, generally Haer'Dalis is taken along with Jan for evil playthroughs, since they are both Chaotic Neutral and fill the missing slots, kinda.
Korgan for tank, Edwin for mage, Viconia for priest, HD for half-melee and half-mage  and Jan for a second mage with lots of thief skills.

I would drop Valygar for Haer'Dalis if you want him but then there's the three mages issue. Also HD flirts with Aerie <_<

Late edit: Jan is pretty nice also. Illusionist/Thief multiclass that offers MUCH better utility than Haer'Dalis. You could drop Aerie for Jan, then. He is also the best Thief in the game.
