Hmm. I would have expected that Rock Armor and/or Arcane shield (I have shield right now) would remain useful throughout. Maybe not though, once you start wearing more armor. I still haven't unlocked the AW specialization (although I cheated and read the wiki so I know where I need to go now :P)

Do you use the heaviest armor you can, if you don't mind me asking?

Technically they do, it's just that there comes a point in the game where the extra defence and armour points they offer just aren't worth the extra fatigue and upkeep on top of everything else the mage has got.

My AW/BM wears Warden Commander armour, i.e. massive. In my experience any fatigue level below 30% before sustainables is manageable with adequate Willpower. Warden Commander armour happens to be one of those Massive armours that offer a fatigue reduction - and the rest of the enchantments are just really useful for a mage (Stamina is considered to be mana when an item that affects it is used by a mage, so the commander armour boosts your mana pool by the same as a 10-point boost to willpower, and speeds up recovery of it too. Plus extra gubbins like increased critical damage and health.

I've heard that set mentioned in another thread I believe. I know what I'm going to be looking out for then ;)  Thank you very much!

Arcane shield would be my last pick as an AW, since the defence is not that hot. I happen to like rock armor though as it's a sustainable I like to keep one even when I'm in "caster mode" and not in "combat mode". 5% fatique and low upkeep. Combined with fatigue reduction massive armor (i.e. Wade's superior boneplate), you actually do very well, without arcane shield and take a few hits and sit back and cast spells.

Honestly, if I find I'm getting hit a lot, I prefer to throw down a glyph of warding. If you are shooting for max spellpower though, you may want to max out the arcane tree to get that extra 5 spellpower. At any rate, those are end game decisions. Early priority is getting shimmering shield and getting the third spell in the blood magic tree.

Yup, I'm loving my Glyphs :) Effective AND look awesome.

I'm not going for bloodmage though.

Hmm, if you're not gonna go for Blood Mage, then from experience, I've found the best way to take care of these issues is to pump up on mana regen, especially considering that I've seen fatigue go to 50+% with sustainables on (with Warden Commander's Armor). The Staff of the Magister Lord and Andruil's Blessing are what I found really useful playing as an AW/SH.

Absolutely. My AW/SH uses the staff while casting, is wearing the belt, plus some other cool stuff. she switches to sword n shield when meleeing. Quick n easy.

I personally don't bother with sword n board, but that's just my obsession with a lack of being able to hit.

More advice to the OP:

If you're going to be playing with a team, but you want to be the tank, then go with the best armor you can get (Preferably Warden Commander's), but stick with a staff. Even with that Arcane Warrior sword, you still gotta sheath that bad boy when you're casting. Just slows you down and makes you less effective (You can switch if you want, but I find the bonuses on gear like Staff of the Magister Lord better to keep during active combat rather than switching out.) You can use actual mage robes, but I wouldn't advise it. My personal setup was this, actually.

Weapon: Staff of the Magister Lord
Headgear: Helm of Honnleath/The Libertarian's Cowl
Chest: Reaper's Vestments/Warden Commander Armor
Gloves: Black Hand Gauntlets/Warden Commander Gloves
Boots: Magus War/Warden Commander Boots
Belt: Andruil's Blessing
Amulet: The Spellward
Rings: Lifegiver/Key to the City/Dreamsever

I actually used a rather lovable combination of spells. I'd drop down Virulent Walking Bomb on a mob, drop Storm of the Century on them, and then Force Field myself and watch the mobs explode. That's why some gear there was solely for +x% spirit damage. Any AoE combination works, but this was the most satisfying.

I'm happy to see people mentioning some spells I've already picked, like the Glyphs and the Force (telepathy?) line. I probably won't use all that you've mentioned, but the basic concept is the same :)

I think I'm actually gonna give Alistair a shake on my mage...my bard has been so mean to him that I'm pretty sure he's gonna get mad and quit, so I've been gearing up Sten, who she gets along with much better anyhow, lol.

So I won't be the only tank...but I want to be able to when I need to type thing. I'm definitely bookmarking this thread so I can keep referring back to it as I level.

Yah, already downloaded and installed that one even though I won't be needing it for awhile. This is why I love PC games, lol.

Oh, that mod. I use it with my AW but overall, I find that the only useful sword is Spellweaver. Everything else offers pointless buffs. Still, I've found that your hit rate is too low for sword/board to be of any beneficial use other than defense. Spellweaver and Fade Wall are probably your best bet for a sword/shield set, but I ditched the notion of using a sword and shield before I could bother to get any of them with that playthrough.

Well, I also have the Winter Forge, and craft my own damn weapons and armour. With the stats I want. Not uber godmode stuff, but with the stats I want rather than those the game decides is good. And in the latest version, you do actually have to craft (ala NWN2) and put skills points into that crafting, as well as buy and learn the formulae, the materials, and so on.

Precisely. The Magic bonus on the Spellweaver effectively functions like a damage bonus on a sword for anyone else, so it's not like it's wasted. Staffs are the way to go when rattling off spells, imo.

Glad to see more people trying to make a paladin type. Though the one you're making seem to be more paladin type then mine will ever be. Prepare to be frowning (a lot) when you run out of mana. But right group setup helps tremendously ofcourse, not to mention right gear.
