Hi, I'm currently doing a playthrough of Mass Effect 2 with a Renegade Shepard and I was just wandering how many renegade points do you need to not lose the loyalty of Jack and Miranda during their argument scene? Thank you.

It's not a fixed number. Morality in ME2 works differently from ME1. Instead of a certain number of points needed to get a particular paragon or renegade conversation option you need to have a certain percentage of the number of points you could possibly have got up to that point. The game checks your each of your actual morality point scores against the highest possible total of each that you could have scored in each of the areas you've visited so far and works out what the percentage is.

So for example, say a certain conversation wants 50% for renegade and 75% for paragon, and up to that point you could have scored exactly 200 of each (it ignores the fact that many are mutually exclusive and it's unlikely that you'd have 200 of both), the renegade only option would be available if you have greater than 100 renegade points, the paragon only option would be available if you had more than 150 paragon points, and both would be available if you had at least 100 renegade and 150 paragon. But if you went to another location before that so that the maximums were now 240 of each the thresholds for the same conversation would now be 120 for renegade and 180 for paragon.

So as I said, the number of points you need in a certain conversation is not fixed but depends on how many points you could potentially have got from either a pure paragon and pure renegade playthrough, all of which has two practical upshots. The first is that once you start falling behind on the number of potential points you could have got vs actual points you did get it rapidly becomes difficult to claw your way back, which in turn means it's easier to get morality point tests with high percentages (off the top of my head the really tough ones are in Zaeed''s loyalty mission if you go a certain way, one optional one in Samara's loyalty mission, another optional one in Thane's loyalty mission, the Jack/Miranda argument and the Tali/Legion argument) out of the way as early as you can rather than leaving it until later, though Tali/Legion really has to be very late on because of when you meet Legion. When you're getting points in mostly in small handfuls at a time it's easier to make 75% by having 12 out of a possible 16 points than 180 out of a possible 240. The second upshot is that the renegade and paragon bars are next to bloody useless since they're showing accrued points instead of what you really need to know.

What the particular percentage is that you're after I have no idea but I do know it's said to be one of the higher ones, the lower than the paragon percentage to resolve the same argument. There are a number of ways to help boost your chances of getting through this and similar paragon/renegade tests, though for some you really needed to have been doing them from the beginning of the game to work.

First is simply to read a morality guide and game the system by doing everything to maximise points. Personally I think this makes for a dull, non role played, script driven play, but it'd work so it deserves a mention. Second, and more practically, is to import an ME1 character. This is because you get a proportion of your ME1 morality points up to a max of 190 of each carried over in the import. This is a huge bonus early on in the game and guarantees you'll make all tests early - a 75% required percentage when the game has offered you 40-50 points but you began with 190 means you'll probably be comfortably over 400%. And since you get points for making these tests you'll be more likely to stay ahead of the game even if you're role playing it for the story and not picking conversation options and making choices for points.

Third is to max out your character class passive skill, i.e. combat mastery for soldiers, biotic mastery for adepts and so on, as early as you can and pick the level 4 evolution that offers a 100% bonus on morality points. As I understand it the game only makes its percentage calculations on base points from any missions and assignments you've done. If its calculation says you could have got 100 up to this point all it cares about is that you have more than 75 for a 75% percentage. It doesn't mind that the 38 you actually got has been doubled to 76 by the bonus from the right evolution of your passive class skill. Nor would it mind the third tactic you can use, which is the temporary bonus you'd have from equipping the Death Mask head armour before you go on the mission that triggers the paragon and/or renegade test you need to pass.

Finally you can cheat, which is really the only option to pass the test for one of the tougher renegade or paragon solution if you haven't done any of the above and haven't got yourself a high enough percentage by luck. The Gibbed Save Editor will allow you to add as many morality points of either kind as you need to pass, and in fact you can add more than you'll ever need right at the beginning of the game and simply do as you please ignoring the whole morality system. For the same reason the 100% class skill bonus and the ME1 import bonus work so effectively giving yourself several hundred points of each will ensure you will get every paragon conversation even when playing pure renagade or vice versa, or even choosing neutral options to score nearly no points at all.

Personally I've used all the above but prefer to use an ME1 import plus the class skill. HTH.

The short answer is that as a renegade you probably won't have a problem with Jack and Miranda.
But you may have a problem with Tali and Legion if you complete both their "loyalty" missions

Good to know, thank you.
