(Un)hardening companions

I also want the ability to unharden a companion. For example, if one of our companions was an evil blood mage that's only out for themselves I think it would be cool if we could, after many conversations, change his outlook on life and make him a "better" person.

Alistair: "You're right, Warden! From now on I'm going to be more assertive!" *continues to be a puppy*
Leliana: "You're right, Warden! Killing is awesome and fun!" *continues to be a preachy nag*
The intention of the Rivalry/Friendship system in DA2 was to do pretty much exactly what you describe, and despite a couple of obvious problems, it did pretty well, I thought. Particularly with Isabela.
All it needed was more work, I think, but most people were opposed to it simply because they (incorrectly) view "Rivalry" points as a punishment, and chose to interpret it as "Hatred", which isn't supposed to be the case.

....because asking for it means BioWare will do this. They thrive on making fans cry, you know. Any fishwife could tell you the same.

Leliana and Alistair barely changed at all, though.

I think they need to change the color to green instead of red or something. Just make it known early on that Rivalry isn't bad.

I hardened Zev though it was unintentioned. He talked about fancy guys and was fancy about me. I had to shower very long to get about his hardening in this close up scenes.

In real life I know few people who has really diffirent views of things compaired to me. We may argue, and not agree on much, but still we can co-exist. So I rather have variety of views with companions and even when they don't agree with me, I'd like them to stay with me and continue giving me responses that match their personalities.

Back on topic: hardening Alistair or Leliana had some dialogue changes (and banter changes, if I recall). But the most substantial impact was in the romances, if the Warden had romanced them, and in how Alistair acts when it comes to choosing Ferelden throne in third act. He's more "kingly".
But I prefer how DA2 did it. Whether a companion was a rival or a friend had a more noticeable impact than the hardening of Leliana or Alistair in Origins.

Just show them a picture of a darkspawn mother. Problem solved

It wasn't an option in DA 2 and I'd like to see it return. I don't want to the ability to change all my companions over to my way of thinking, but at least one or two would be cool. I loved how you could make Leliana and Alistar cold and pretty much change them as a person completely.
I also want the ability to unharden a companion. For example, if one of our companions was an evil blood mage that's only out for themselves I think it would be cool if we could, after many conversations, change his outlook on life and make him a "better" person.
I'd love to have influence, but I want the essence of each character to only have subtle changes as a result of my interactions. But to transform them into completly different characters? No that's a bit too far fetched for my liking.

You can't actually change people this way in real life anyway - so if it "must" happen... then I think the connections have to be much more involved.

It was in DA2. Its practically rivarly/friendship system - its especially seen with Sebastian. If you 'harden' him, he will go on to take the throne of Starkhaven. If you leave him as **** he will remain a losser in priesthood.
