I *HOPE* everyone knows what those terms mean... otherwise I suggest that you before reading further, get an online dictionary...
What I notice in Dragon Age, is that in general you can divide the attacks of enemies in about 4 types...
Full Force attacks, ambush, stalling or flanking.
As a player, you can use the following:
Full force attacks, stalling, flanking and pulling. Ambushes, in this game, are pretty difficult to execute.
As for the enemies, full force attacks are the most common - especially amongst the darkspawn. Ambushes are often scripted at certain places (at some times, a bit painfully combined with lockins, so you suddenly find yourself in an awfully inadequate indefensible position - I hate that kind of situations), while stalling is pretty rare (only when the enemy is unaware of you and your party) and flanking... well... that is often because the full force attacks are with too much for just one side...
Sometimes (but in general scripted) I also notice (tactical) retreats of enemies... like the Hurlock Emissary in the Wilds.
Personally, I use full force attacks the most, a bit of stalling if I notice the enemy already approaching (hell, once I saw an group marching up before I should have noticed them.... I managed to stall my group on the right places for an ambush!) - and also pulling. Flanking is quite difficult... especially since I can't find the right settings for the AI to allow an flanking attack. I use pulling mostly if I suspect that the battle is too tough and once but when I've got the space for an tactical retreat to another position while getting a few enemies with me.
Which tactics do you use, how often, which ones do you like most and which ones do you really dispise?
Pulling, fleeing, being locked in & other stuff... (strategies discussion)

The most lame tactic is to cast lighting/blizzard on an area in another room to kill everything without pulling it. Works well in Howe's castle and other buildings.

I usually use full force, maybe about 70% of the time, and pulling the rest. I simply have no patience to set up ambushes, and flanking...I guess I've never considered it.

i must admit i use any tactics to win, when i was a mage i'd often cast blizzard and such from another room so they would be dead before they even noticed me but imo thats better than me running in and dieing.
currently im using a rogue and its going well, leliana uses her bow from 1 side, alistair/shale tank and taunt and i use my rogues combat stealth to flank behind the enemy and add ranged suppoort from the other side too
hasn't failed me yet, also i find its extremely worthwhile trying traps, even the simple spring trap is very effective and its incredibly cheap

Most buildings can be handled rather simply by casting an AoE through the door followed by, if they even make it to the door, cone of cold.
Setting up an ambush in this game is next to impossible, mostly due to the lack of opportunity.
Tactics varied mostly due to the terrain, in the forest you don't really have a choice but to rush in, perhaps hold a bridge for cover. Buildings were rather simple and entertaining, for the most part all you had to do was pull the few fighters through a door then keep closing it to cut off the archer fire.
Oveall, it really depends on what difficulty you're playing on. In normal you can easily make it through the game by rushing in without using a single trap or poison, even potions were used relatively infrequently.

I disagree, most of the time I pull it is in to an ambush. Usually using terrain for cover from archers and mages, or narrow choke points to funnel enemies in to traps. Otherwise what is the point of pulling than to exploit the AI inadequacy by killing them one at a time? Bear in mind I use the Bring a Friend mod, so when I pull, it is either to gain advantage in position, bait traps, or to avoid potentially bad situations in large and crowded rooms with enemy runners alerting additional groups. social.bioware.com/project/1335/
Such tactics become much more important when you play mageless also, since you can usually rely on a mage to level the playing field and allow one to "fight straight-up". Without them, you have to fall back on traps and some higher level abilities like two-hand sweep and upgraded war cry for crowd control, and explosives for extra area effect damage in fights like the wolf ambush. Particularly in the early game when your party is weakest and least geared. Leaving Lothering I always ensure I save a few acid flasks and have at least two people in the party trained in tier 1 poison making so they can toss the things. Haven't had a problem with that fight since.
