I'd really like to see an Amell family selectable background

I like the idea of Charade being a companion, too. If a background is also Amell.. that might be a little Amell overload, but you could also be grouped up with your cousin, so it'd be cool, I think. I'd just prefer the new Amell not be a mage background.

edit: So there is an intent to bring race selection back at some point? Thank God. :-) Hopefully it'll be DA4, but if not.. then hopefully DA5. Can't be too soon. Likewise I hope backgrounds add a whole, whole lot to the game, and if not, hopefully we get origins back next time.

That would make Charade your sister. :wizard:

I was against the amell idea before, but now I am kinda for it.

Yes. Gamlen wasn't that bad imo.

I thought Gamlen was an amusing if pathetic figure. The character was well-written and quite well-played. Writing was not one of the problems I had with Dragon Age II; my issues were mostly with game mechanics and the reuse of environments and the smallness of Kirkwall (I've come to believe that Kirkwall would have worked better as one big open-world area, with some visitable building interiors and the option to switch between day and night).

Absolutely. If anything, it'd make me more likely to play an Amell. Gamlen as my PC's dad would be hilarious.

Also something of potential interest: I'm noting that most the people interested in playing as another Amell character (including myself) intend to make that character a mage. I think it would be extremely funny if an Amell background was given as an option, but only to a non-mage character. Would people still want the option, if that were the case?

I, personally, would still want to be an Amell, but it's more important to me that all my canon characters be mages, so I'd only use it on other imports.

It would be interesting to have to play a non-mage Amell, although I'm not particularly in favour of restricting backgrounds based on class. Mass Effect didn't do it and I don't see why Dragon Age should (yes I know, different creative teams, etc.).

Besides, even if BioWare makes an Amell background available (oh please, oh please, oh please) and I will be playing a mage in my first playthrough (likely flipping a coin to determine gender) I don't plan to play as an Amell.

If the Amell BG is made available I will be saving it for a mage linked to a Male human mage (DA:O) --> male Hawke mage (DA II) --> female mage (DA III) in a save file transfer saga I call "A Tale of Three Mages". Regardless of what BioWare does, I will be playing a male mage whenever I transfer that save data over.

Oh, I agree completely. I just thought it'd be hilarious. "You wanted to play as an Amell? Sure! What, a mage Amell? Haha, nope!"

I'm hoping that since race is restricted again, there are no class restrictions. But we'll see. I'm sure I'll try everything out at least once.

Good point!  Now you've got me liking the idea...

I probably won't choose the Amell background since my Warden canon is a dalish and I don't have the same sense of continuity, but I think the option would be pretty awesome.

No, but not because it's Gamlen. I actually like Gamlen's character. I want to play an Orlesian, with the native French speaking VA and everything. I can't do that if my character could be originally a Free Marcher from Kirkwall.

Character's parents could be from Kirkwall while PC is born in Orlais or came to Orlais as a child. French accent AND Amell background still possible. :)
