Question: Would people be willing to play an Amell if it meant you had to be Gamlen's bastard offspring?
Absolutely. If anything, it'd make me more likely to play an Amell. Gamlen as my PC's dad would be hilarious.
Also something of potential interest: I'm noting that most the people interested in playing as another Amell character (including myself) intend to make that character a mage. I think it would be extremely funny if an Amell background was given as an option, but only to a non-mage character. Would people still want the option, if that were the case?
I, personally, would still want to be an Amell, but it's more important to me that all my canon characters be mages, so I'd only use it on other imports.
It would be interesting to have to play a non-mage Amell, although I'm not particularly in favour of restricting backgrounds based on class. Mass Effect didn't do it and I don't see why Dragon Age should (yes I know, different creative teams, etc.).
Besides, even if BioWare makes an Amell background available (oh please, oh please, oh please) and I will be playing a mage in my first playthrough (likely flipping a coin to determine gender) I don't plan to play as an Amell.
If the Amell BG is made available I will be saving it for a mage linked to a Male human mage (DA:O) --> male Hawke mage (DA II) -->
female mage (DA III) in a save file transfer saga I call "A Tale of Three Mages". Regardless of what BioWare does, I will be playing a male mage whenever I transfer that save data over.
