I, like (I imagine) many others, had been encountering the error 36 while attempting to install the 1.02a patch.  I saw some other threads regarding the error, and I wasn't inclined to reinstall the entire game, or found the other fixes didn't work for me.

In my case, I found that the patcher was choking on specific files.  After browsing around and seeing this thread:
http://social.biowar...58/index/189269

I decided to attempt the fix described for Vista/Windows7 Games Explorer, which describes how to pull the original game files from the DVD using winrar.

In my case, the patcher was choking on:

modules\\single player\\data\\al_cir362ar_dog.rim
modules\\single player\\data\\al_zz_banter_test_area.rim

I suspect it may be different for every person, but I list these as an example.

I went to the DVD and under the data directory (eg D:\\data) found the "campaign.rar" file.  Using winrar, I extracted the two above files into game install location.  After doing this, the patch process completed successfully.

I determined which files were creating the error by watching the DOS window the RTPatcher spawns.  It halted first at the al_cir362ar_dog.rim file, and then later at the zz_banter file.  If it closes too quickly for you, you can also do this:

After it hits the error, do not hit "cancel."  But rather, run the patch program manually.  In my case, it was something like:

"E:\\Games\\Dragon Age\\bin_ship\\patch.exe" -u -e "E:\\Games\\Dragon Age" "E:\\Games\\Dragon Age\\bin_ship\\DAO_1.00_TO_1.02.RTP"

(You can see I installed my game on the E: drive)  By first opening a command prompt, and then running this command, you will see what file it is choking on.

Anyways, I apologize for not writing step-by-step instructions, but I did want to post something in case it happens to help someone else solve their problem.

I guess I kinda screwed myself, as I've been running without a disk and deleted the original daorigins.exe file.. And now I can't remember what I did with my DVD to reinstall the game, so I can't patch or run the new DLC.

This worked on the first file, but failed on the second.

I was on Win7, switched to my XP partition to try a clean install + patch. Same *exact* problems.

First, thank you to the OP. I was able to resolve my error 36 while attempting to execute patch 1.02a by using a mismash of solutions from this thread.

For others who might be having issues with problem files that 'hang' the installation, here's what I did:

1. I ran updater 1.02a.

2. I took a screen shot of the cmd window right as it hung before giving the error message (if you have slow fingers, try this in safe mode). I pasted the screenshot into paint. The cmd window showed an error 36 associated with packages\\core\\data\\designerscripts.rim

3. Using winrar, I searched for "designerscripts.rim" on the DragonAge DVD.

4. I cut my local copy of designerscripts.rim from \\Program Files\\Dragon Age\\packages\\core\\data\\ and put it on my desktop as a backup

5. I extracted from the dvd designerscripts.rim and placed it into \\Program Files\\Dragon Age\\packages\\core\\data\\

6. I re-ran the installer and it was able to complete.

I tried several other fixes listed on the forums, but this was the only process that worked for me. Your mileage may vary. Good luck.

This is a great fix and worked for me first time. Thank you very very much. I am using Vista and just to point out it is  \\\\Program Files (x86)\\\\Dragon Age\\\\packages\\\\core\\\\data\\\\. So "designerscripts.rim" is what was causing my issue as well.Image IPB

That is exactly the way I did it, and got it going :) And  it wasn't a trouble at all, even. Worked on my damned Vista, so it does not work only for XP it seems.. Thanks a lot roshoyki!!

Thanks to the OP dynafire and to roshoyki. On XP SP3 I had exactly the issue that  roshoyki described (designerscripts.rim was the issue, apparently modified by the 1.01 patch or something else mid-December), followed those steps, and the patch install completed fine.

Bioware admins: You *really* need to get this issue into the official tech support FAQs--I looked and found nothing related, and this really shouldn't be something that folks are having to fix themselves by finding a solution on the forums and extracting files with WinRAR. I've *no* idea why your RTPatch process is so feeble that it couldn't handle a file that was (AFAICT) only modified by installation of one of your own patches.

Glad to see that there's some success with this fix. I wasted a whole morning trying to fix the issue and hoped I could save some time for others.

I didn't give too much context in my first post, so here's a crack at an overview of the issue and fix.

Problem:

Encountering error 36 while using the dragon age origins 1.02a updater 'hangs' the updater, consequently the update never successfully completes. This issue is particularly frustrating because patch 1.02a is necessary in order to run the downloadable content 'Return to Ostagar.'

Possible cause:

In my baseless opinion as a non-technical person, it appears patching a fresh dragon age origins with any patch earlier than 1.02a modifies dragon age files. The 1.02a patch application appears be unable to handle certain of these modified files and hangs rather than overwriting the offending files. Thus, the update never completes.

Fix:

Kind of a rehash of my earlier post above, but here's the basic idea (see the original post above if you want specifics):

1. Identify the file that hangs the 1.02a updater. Write down the folder path for that file.

2. 'Cut' the problem file and 'paste' it somewhere for backup

3. Use WinRAR (if you don't have it it's shareware, so just download it) to 'search' your Dragon Age Origins DVD for the file that is hanging. You must use winrar (or a similar decompression software) because the problem files are typically compressed in a .rar file.

4. Extract the file from the DVD. Place this fresh file into the folder that previously held the problem file.

5. Relaunch the updater and it should complete.

I overcame 1.02a "hangs" by reinstalling over the original, (as pere 2009 has found) and then applying the patch with no futher problems. I am runnig Vista Home Premium.

I had the issue with designerscripts.rim file

Anyway the real error message for 36 is:

error ept0036: Old File not found. However, a file of the same name was found. No update done since file contents do not match.

http://imagebin.org/85967

The backup I made of the original file (before recopying from DVD) matches the resulting patched file. Not sure why it failed.
