TBH I'm doing a cannon playthrough right now (I'm on awakenings) and the more I play the more I like Nathaniel Howe. He's fast becoming one of my favorites. Other than that I'd say DA:O Zevran and Alistair- DA2 Varric and Isabela.

It's probably no surprise to anyone who knows me even a little, but Anders. His story arc was very strong, and the actions he took both dramatic and effective. Whether you agree with him or not, you can't deny he took a big stand for what he believes in, and that he had a huge influence on the series as a whole. It doesn't hurt that my sympathies tend to lean towards the mages, and have ever since my first playthrough of DAO where I started a mage warden and was horrified by the Circle's atmosphere and the Tranquil.

But back on topic, Anders is a great example of a character who has a lot of agency. Rather than just talk or complain about his problems, he took major steps to address them. And they were effective, at least in his mind. They sparked a war amongst the mages and the templars, and I think it's a fairly reasonable guess to say things will not be returning the status quo any time soon. You can thank Anders for that.

Probably Sten, with Morrigan as a close second, maybe a tie. Sten's demeanor, and the way Mark Hildreth portrayed him, was pretty unique, a weird combo of stoic and exasperated. DA2 had some good ones, Varric was entertaining, I also liked Hawk (sarcastic or aggressive) - I can't really say the same about the Warden, maybe its a failing of the imagination but unvoiced main characters just don't have the same impact.

Anders. I love his character progression. I love a lot his dialogue. I like how tragic he becomes at the end. And how twisted his beliefs become. I don't necessarily agree with his actions, but I found his devolution to be fascinating.

I really like a lot of characters in DA series. But none more than Flemeth. I have to know what she is up to.

I'd say Morrigan, she was a very compelling character, with great dialogue and a brilliant performance by Claudia Black.

Merrill would be a close second, for me, also very well written and performed, but primarily because I love Eve Myles' accent.

Alistair because he's adorable, and an amazing person.

Anders because I have a major bone-on for tortured healers with a cause.

It helps that they're both pretty funny.

For my part, I guess I would say all the companions in Origins. Everyone had vivid personalities and sympathetic motivations. I like many of the NPCs in general (Cyrion and Shianni, Carroll, and so on). And of course my Warden...because he's grown so much in my imagination and he is awesome ;-)

Sten and the Arishok.  I like the Qunari, what else is there to say?

Third and Fourth go to Merrill and Velanna because I like the Dalish....you get the point.

Morrigan!

Her snarky comments were great. I thought the romance was well done. Her view of humanity and magic was interesting. Not to mention Claudia Black, I even loved the few lines she had as Admiral Xen in Mass Effect. I could listen that woman read a shopping list. As much as I want to see Morrgian again, please, please, do not bring Morrigan back without that voice.

Runners Up: The whole Origins cast (minus Leliana and Wynne), Velanna, Nathaniel (who I hated at first), Sigrun, Fenris, Merrill, and Varric.

Leliana, she was just so dang cute! Not to mention if you played as a city elf and then play Leliana's song you find out she freed your mother from jail.

Shale, Morrigan and Oghren. (DA:O style, he sucked in DA:A.)

Shale because she is simply so outagerously over the top. Her dialogues had me in cramps and her banter with the "Painted Elf" ( Zevran ) was to hillarious for words. Best character ever, hands down.
( Warden: I notice you call your former master he... Shale: yes, I am just funny like that!   :D)

Morrigan, because she is just awesome. Amazingly well written, and Claudia Black just nails her. Her cruelty, her wit, her charm and her doubts, combined with that relentless ruthlessness and boundless ambition. Fantastic character!

Oghren, because he is the most dwarvish of dwarfs. Vile, wicked, drunk, selfish, murderous and funny as hell!

Alistair-- he's just so likeable, hilarious (comic relief despite all the carnage and bad events), handsome, and sensitive but also kicks Darkspawn butt, and I loved the voice in DAO. So not stereotypical for a Templar (aside from basic faith).

Varric: Loved the voice. Also, he's smooth and slick and faithful to Bianca. He also never seemed to get really riled up except in the fantasy house raid scene which was great! There was still a lot of mystery about Varric by the end of the game, I felt like I could learn a lot more about where he came from and what he's up to. He's like your 'un-dwarf' dwarf, so totally not stereotypical like the Orzammar dwarfs.

Sten: big scary warrior dude, but with a surprising sweet tooth and educated manner, and also could care less about impressing you and what you think of him.

I like the characters who don't fall into their own stereotype by the end of the game to the point that they are predictable. DAII characters seemed predictable by the end of the game: Fenris: the mage hater, Anders the mage lover, Aveline: who I liked, and admired, but was predictable as the self sacrificing goody two shoes who put the guard before her own needs etc. Isabella: out for herself, following her libido everywhere she went, Merril: I can't say a whole lot since I didn't use her in my party much, but her theme was 'Blood magic is fine because I know what I'm doing, (naive-darling) and fixing the heritage and historical Eluvian of my people is more important than being accepted by my people and so I will forever be the social outcast who still wants to make a good impression, trying to make you overlook the blood magic thing by being adorable"
Well, at least those were my take on the characters. I haven't played with Sebastian yet.
I like characters to have a little bit of surprise in them, like do things you wouldn't expect on occasion. Of course, stereotypical characters do have their place, but I like the party characters to be more complex and not as predictable, aside from their basic morals.

All the Origins companions. Fave being Morrigan. Fell in love very first playthrough. Loghain too as Simon does a brilliant job as his VA.

Actually I kinda made a list a while back:

Love: Morrigan >>> Alistair > Sten > Loghain
Like: Zevran > Nathaniel > Anders(DA:A) > Leliana > Isabela > Varric > Oghren > Wynne > Shale > Carver > Justice(DA:A)
Meh: Sebastian > Aveline > Sigrun > Velanna > Merrill
Dislike: Fenris > Anders(DA2)

Dog is my favorite character, because he can be so darn funny in the cutscenes, and because I can rub his belly whenever I want. Merrill, because she is so naive and dorky at the same time and has no clue she is beautiful. Sten because he totally does not give you an answer you expect and cannot be outwitted by Morrigan. Alistair because he is a goofball and just has such a sensitive voice. Morrigan because she has the best scathing retorts. Wynne, because sometimes we just need a nice, dependable mommy figure. Leliana because she can still be spiritual and artsy and prissy in the middle of a darkspawn war. Isabella, because she has absolutely no problem with flaunting her sexuality and not being "owned". Anders because he is a flirt (in Awakening) cares so deeply for injustice, and because of the little gasping sound he makes before kissing Hawke for the first time. Fenris because of the music playing while he broods, his intelligence, and the way he "glows". Varric because he is pragmatic, entertaining and light hearted and puts me at ease-- couldn't make it through DA2 without him! Shale, because of her superiority complex, and because she just tells it like it is. Zevran because he has a hilarious spanish/italian mix of an accent, is nonjudgemental, and is a terrible and comical braggart. Aveline because she is so righteous, lawful, and powerful. Oghren because, well, never mind, I think I already married him.

I love most of the characters (particularly companions) that we've encountered so far but my favourites would have to be Alistair, Morrigan, Sigrun, Fenris, Varric, Zevran, Flemeth and Loghain for more reasons than I care to list. The DA universe is full of interesting characters indeed!
