Sten.   He's cute.  He's got a great voice.  And I like his personality.

But I totally disagree with his beliefs so I try to keep my insane crush under control.  (Although given the opportunity I'd sit and argue with him for DAYS.)  Plus I suspect that The Gaider is going to kill him off in Those Who Speak #3 just to SPITE me.

Bastard.

Before DA2 mine was Sten since I could sort of relate to him, being a somewhat quiet, taciturn guy myself. I also loved his sense of humor. But then DA2 happened and Sten was pushed to second place behind Varric who absolutely blew me away with his personality and his amazing sense of humor.

Oh boy there's a few of them =]

Shayle was incredibly well crafted, hilarious dialogue, and definitely an awesome party member both gameplay and personality wise

Zevran was a heart-breaker as being so morally ambiguous that you could see the good in him yet you know deep down he could turn on you and leave in a moment's notice

Wynne was neat in the sense of her protective, motherly nature and the fact she didn't let the likes of age or typical female tropes slow her down

Fenris was my favorite DA2 character. He's got an incredibly polite side (you're allowed to disagree and he respects that, much unlike a certain whiny mage), he's got a soft side and is jealously by your side. Plus he's a warrior...an elven warrior...nice to know there's some diversity amidst the tropes

Varric was well written and so opposite of the typical dwarf (Scottish brogue, crazy warrior, overly proud)

Aveline was one of the most inspiring characters in terms of her dialogue (I still use that phrase 'you turn the page when you're ready' from your dialogue regarding her deceased father, so powerful in terms of wisdom and letting go when you're ready, not when others). She's got wit and the fact she didn't fall over Hawke and had her own personal preferences that didn't include him/her

Isabela was another well done character. She's free-spirited and easy-going, almost a female Zevran, but upon seeing the rivalry romance, I saw one of the most complex, powerful characters in Dragon Age. I'm not for returning characters but I'd love to see more of her around, possibly for DA3

Bethany/Carver were really well done siblings with complexity.

And some of my favorite NPCs:

Herren and Wade. Most hilarious couple in DA thus far. Love the bickering and whining between them. They sure do make some effective armor that's for sure!

Grand Cleric Elthina. Instead of everyone in the Chantry being portrayed as a religious zealot, she comes off as maternal and peaceful, someone who actually practices what she preaches versus becoming politically minded

Branka. She was a handful, loved the attitude and twisted mindset. Her overall relation to Oghren made her interesting and more memorable (and I love the accent)

Bryce and Eleanor Cousland. Tough, awesome parents who go down together. Nice knowing in-game parents have personality instead of being mere plot devices to exist solely for the sake of being biological parents

Leandra Hawke. I actually really liked her and still get choked up when I see her die in my DA2 playthroughs. You just want to save her not to meta-game but because she's really a good person despite being a noble (she's not snobby, mean, or downright rude, and she's willing to help people)

I can't choose only one. Top 3, maybe?

1) Merrill.
Because she is a researcher in some way. Scientist. She is nerdy, intelligent and awful cute. And her voice. And her looks. And everything!.. is it warm in here?

2) Shale.
"Now, let us crush something soft and watch it fountain blood. That is a girlish thing to want to do, yes?"

3) Leliana.
Do you know how much of a chance to have a crash on her for dalish female elf? Yes, after that "You all must fetch and carry for us (humans) because we find your kind attractive and we`ll be pay you our human money". In my opinion, it is strive for one hundred percent. Why? Because she will start telling stories. Using her voice. Once she told me that most of stars is tears of some human princess. I was surprised. I thought she know story about Elgar'nan and his father, the sun. Ah, even she a barbarian. But pretty one.

Aveline, Isabela, Varric and Morrigan looking unkindly at me now. Er... let's just say I love all of them, do I?
P.S. Sorry for my bad english.

Very difficult to pick just one, but Sten, Oghren, Morrigan, Alistair and Sigrun, among others

Cole, he was easily the highlight of Asunder for me. I loved seeing his story unravel through the course of the book and Gaider did an amazing job of getting me emotionally invested in the character. I can't wait to see what they do with him in DA3.

Shale and Loghain. I grew on the latter through the first novel because after reading it, his actions in Origins were understandable for me. So in my import playthrough while he doesn't survive it, I'm not the one who kills him.

Shale is just awesome, nuff said.

Sigrun <3
I completely adore her. Her personality is just so interesting! Her determination that drives her to do extraordinary things like fighting as many darkspawn as she possibly can. Her never give up attitude is just so awesome. I also love her perky style and that she can crack jokes about all sorts of things and be fiercely loyal to everyone that manage to earn her trust. She will never betray you and will always do everything in her power for you. If there's anyone i want at my side, it's going to be Sigrun.

Leliana, she was just so dang cute! Not to mention if you played as a city elf and then play Leliana's song you find out she freed your mother from jail.

I love the connection here, myself :)  IMO it makes the relationship that much more special, and unique with that origin <3

Flemeth!

She's ridiculously mysterious, seems to be very powerful, can transform into a freaking dragon, looks awesome (I liked her DA:O looks as well as DA2's, even though they've gone a bit overboard with the latter), is always where she needs/wants to be to help someone which in turn will forward her scheming and she seems to be very important to the plot. I can't wait to know about her origins, if she really is the witch of the wilds from the legend, what's going on between her and Morrigan, just all of it really. Also, her voice actress has an incredible voice! I love the tone and the accent.

One of the things DA2 did wrong was to unashamedly hint to a plot surrounding Flemeth in the beginning of the game and then to not deliver it. At all. The sundermount quest was interesting as it suggested a kind of Horcruxes plan for Flemeth, but that was it. I was so freaking disappointed. May Meredith burn in hell for being an obsessive idiot and may Orsino join her there for being so weak and turning into an abomination at the hardest hour, completely defeating the purpose of his role and giving more reason to the Templars to hunt mages.

That brings me to the point where DA2's blood mages can't control themselves as opposed to Tevinter where every freaking mage seems to be able to summon demons without them possessing the mage that invoked them, but that would be going off topic.

Flemeth, yay!

Probably Sigrun, Shale, Varric and Zevran.

It's probably safe to say that Mr. Gaider and I do not see eye to eye about dwarves...

I have a lot of favourites, but I'll say Isabela. In particular, because when I first saw her character, I instantly thought 'worthless fanservice character'. I shouldn't really, considering it's a bad outlook to have irl, and Bioware always comes out with interesting, developed characters. The demo didn't help. But after she abandoned me in my first playthrough I was determined to find out more about her, and had her with me all through my second playthrough.

What I realised is that she's so much more than Ms Fanservice. So much about her personality and attitude stems from her backstory, which I learnt through the romance, and I saw how that related to her feelings about individual freedom and choices, and her lifestyle. She's affected by her history, but she doesn't dwell on it and she lives in the moment, which was especially enjoyable considering the game's tone and the party. Even the way she talks about ships and sailing, you can feel her passion for it, making her more than just 'cool pirate character'.

Her banters in particular really reveal a lot about her personality and how she thinks. Isabela's selfish, but she's also so kind to Merrill and Bethany and wants the best for them. She starts off a cow to Aveline, but she also teaches her to toughen up emotionally and not let words get to her. Her conversation with Anders about the concept of justice was fascinating, and proof that she is intelligent and can think deeply, even if she doesn't like to (or at least, doesn't like to portray it). She makes quite a few astute observations. She's irresponsible, but she still cares about things - her reaction to Kelder in particular was marvellous - and her return in the Qunari crisis was really heart-warming. And of course, she's hilarious.

Overall, her character has shown me that I shouldn't judge people so quickly. And all of that, is why I love her so much. She's the cat's pyjamas.

If I had to narrow it down, I would say Loghain. He is possibly the most in-depth character I've ever seen in a game. At first you hate him and you want to do nothing but kill the bastard. But if you choose to spare him and give him a chance at redemption, he is honest - almost too honest - and the reasons behind what he does, and what he has done, are absolutely selfless. He doesn't care about himself to a fault. While what Loghain has done is appalling, and tactically misplaced, you can't help but admire his resolution once you get to know him.

And what I like is that he may consider your Warden a friend later on, and I'm sure friends for him are hard to come by.

Then it would be Zevran. He does not add anything vital to the plot, but I think that's what I liked about him. There's no extra drama to keep track of. His story is filled with heartbreak, and yet his outlook on life is surprisingly optimistic. And despite his initial dislike for love, if your Warden romances him he falls head over heels. It's adorable, really.

I'm surprised there is a lot of Sigrun like here, usually I am one of the only people to mention her in the companions you wish would return style threads.

Sigrun and Varric are my faves.
