Isabela:
I think she's complex and has a lot of inner conflict going on. She's selfish, she acts selfishly, she preaches selfishness, but she's the type that when truly faced with people suffering, forced to confront it, she'll do the right thing, even if it goes against her own interests. Essentially, she can make the selfish choices when she doesn't have to see the consequences, but guilt overwhelms her when she does. Letting her slave cargo go, and (if she became close to Hawke and co) bringing back the book, for examples. If you rival her, she goes through a dramatic change by the end, having been persuaded that acting selfishly and whimsically - living life running away - isn't the way she wants to live her life anymore.
She has a very protective empathy of women she perceives as more vulnerable than herself, as seen with her treatment of Merrill. A lot of people say Isabela is a sexist character because of the way she acts and her sexual liberty, but its Isabela's own way of progressing women's equality. "Women can go to a brothel too." I think she deliberately tries to show that women are equal to men, not only in positive ways, but in negative ways. Equality isn't holding a group on a pedestal and showing they can be just as good as anyone else, but showing they can be just as bad too - and it shouldn't be considered any worse than if any other group did so. A lot of people are disgusted or look down upon a woman who enjoys sex, yet admire a man who does so. Isabela doesn't think the genders should be viewed so differently.
Are most people's reasons for a character being their favorite really as shallow as the character just being the most physically attractive to you? "Hot" or "cool" is all it takes for Bioware to make a "good character"? This a Final Fantasy forum?

Morrigan - freethinking and great character development (especially the friendship w/warden).
Zevran - loved his personality and had some of the funniest banter.
Sebastian - liked his rivalry development ("prince or priest?"), and it was nice to have a straightforward pious character.

Love this; Someone who actually gets it about what feminism should be about, and sees how Isabela is awesome about it.
On a side note, Velanna and Hardened Leliana are my favorite characters, with Anders a close second. DA2 Anders, not the Awakening one.

Who doesn't love a beer drinking dwarf that tries to make your dog into his personal mount? Or an elf with a personality that would make even the most playa hating guy crack a smile at his jokes?
And the dog, well cause dogs are awesome.

I even did a playthrough being really mean and Alistair had a go at me and I loved it
Alistair was fun after toughening him up he just kept making me want to play again and do something different again
honorable mention to Anders dragon age 1 he was also a joy and was the only thing about awakening that I really liked less said about dragon age 2 the better what did they do to him
so Alistair is the best but dragon age 1 did not really have any out right awful character unlike dragon age 2 where they were bland which made me look forward to all the dragon age origin cameos

DA2 would be Aveline. She's all honorable, but knows when the rules have to be bent. She tolerates Isabela and Varric's antics with (mostly) good humor. And she's fiercely protective of those in her charge.

But in terms of just liking character personality, basically the people I'd be friends with irl if they existed, would be Oghren and Merrill.

Alistair because he's just funny and adorable. Loghain is also a good character, I've never wanted to kill anyone more than him in any game. He is like Saren, at first I hate him but by the end I pity him.
Yeah, Loghain is a great character, I spent the entire game planning my revenge on him and when the moment came I really saw the hero in him. From that moment on, poor Alistair has always been either an hardened king or a drunk, because Loghain always live (either to die slaying the Archdemon or to talk with my King Warden about plans for his nephew.)

I cannot help but smile with characters who get in ackward situations on a normal basis. Alistair and Merrill are both great in that regard. The other ones I love are very strong and at the same time very week characters such as Isabela and Morrigan.

Sten- I just freaking love him XD
Maric- Such a sweet heart in the books (he counts right?)
Alistair- I love his awkward-ness and his lame jokes
Varric- The only dwarf I would ever romance and I really don't like dwarves that much. It's the chest hair.
