I was wondering how do you get the formation menu to come up so i can choose a different formation....

Select the whole party by left-clicking the select all button (or draw a marquee box around everybody). Right click any of the default formation patterns, and it will bring up a menu of alternates. Left-click the alternate to put it on the formation toolbar. Left-click the desired formation pattern from the toolbar.

This might seem a bit obvious, but choose the button for a formation that you don't usually use as when the new choice is selected, you lose the one that was there previously as a quick button.
