Garrus provides excellent weapon damage (sersiously, Black Widow + weapon damage on his passive, he will one shot mooks) and great support powers. Overload is there to handle shields and barriers and his proxy mine can be set up to cause enemies to take extra damage. Also AP Ammo is really, really good if your playing a class that doesn't have its own ammo.
Liara provides excellent crowd control. With so many enemies being unshielded, SIngularity is amazing. Just drop it in a crowd to lock everyone down and then if your a biotic you can combo yourself or have Liara do it. Mid to high levels Liara's cooldowns are fast enough that she can SIngularity > Warp combo on her own. Its awesome. Stasis is great for emergencies and dealing with phantoms or other sneaking enemies. Her warp ammo is also pretty handy.
Those two will get you through any situation you can find in the game. However EDI is also a really strong teammate.
Her Overload is stronger than Garrus's and Incinerate can be used to set up Fire Explosions. Her Decoy is also really nice to draw enemy fire and give you some breathing room.
I like James but he is set up to be a tank character and I personally don't find that very useful in a shooting game. But with Fortification and specced for health/shields, he is almost impossible to kill. He also has access to Incendiary ammo which is amazing when specced for explosive burst. Give him a Revenant or other strong automatic weapon and watch the fire works.
Ashley is a strong weapon character like Garrus but I find Garrus's powers to be more useful. Ash's Inferno grenades are really nice though. Great for crowd control and fire explosions.
Kaidan is a nice support character. He can set up and detonate biotic combos with Reave and he can strip shields/barriers with Overload. His passive also increases squadmates tech or biotic powers so that is a nice bonus.
And finally Javik. His biotics are almost as strong as Liara's but he has stronger weapon damage and health as opposed to her pure biotics. His grenades are pretty amazing as just pure damage and to set off biotic combos. Dark Channel is a great DoT and primer. Pull and Slam are normal as always but still good.
Sorry kinda went off there but any of the squaddies can work. Insanity isn't as hard as it looks so just try out a few pairs see who you like best. Good luck

Kaiden is good for support because, like sharkboy said, he can set up biotic explosions nicely and can do a good job of taking down barriers/shields with Overload. His cryo blast is nice for those fire explosions too.
Javik, another for setting up biotic combos, and his passive shield recharge bonus for squadmates is nice too.
The only one who is not that practical would be James. His incendiary ammo is nice if you are not a soldier/vanguard and his carnage ability does some decent damage, but Liara does the job better with warp and warp ammo, and she offers good crowd control.

Try mixing up squadmates to see what work for you pick them to your weaknesses. (not just the class shepard is). To me it is what works best for you in the end good luck to you friend.

Your mileage may vary and like dirtdriver said, "try mixing up squadmates to see what works for you" and you can find a configuration that works for you.

In Mass Effect 3 this idea is thrown out of the window thanks to combos.
A good way to think of your team is what kind of combos are you going to set up.
If you love incendiary explosions and tech bursts, bring Tali with (Garrus or EDI or Kaidan). Use Tali's Sabotage (with tech vulnerability) and use any offensive tech power to detonate a combo (overload, energy drain, incinerate etc).
If you want biotic explosions, bring Liara and Javik along. (Kaidan is also pretty useful).
Balanced teams are not optimal teams anymore. Combo spamming teams are optimal.
But remember all classes can pull of at least one combo without the squad.
The soldier class can PRIME tech bursts, incendiary explosions and cryo explosions with the right ammo power. Then detonate the combo with a concussive shot.
I'm not sure how the new rules for incendiary and cryo explosions work, but disruptor ammo + concussive shot is a good combo (not amazing, just good).

- Combos will tear enemies apart quickly.
- Combos will save you a lot of ammo (unless you have the particle rifle).
- Bring tali with other tech user for tech combos or bring two biotic squadmates for biotic combos.
- You don't need to rely on combos if you don't want to. With good marksmanship and liberal use of adrenaline rush with the right ammo power, insanity will be slaughtered.
- There is no disasterous squadmate formation. All squadmates have useful powers, and you can perform combos with any team (infact you don't even need squadmates to perform combos).
- If you find insanity is a little too easy try the SPECTRE difficulty mod. Sadly I can't use it since I don't have the PC version of the game. But I heard that this is really challenging.

Tali is good for the Geth missions and thats about it. I mean after Rannoch her Sabotage is useless, the Defense Drone is not that great anyway. She's left with Combat Drone and Energy Drain. I think there are characters with more useful abilities. I think the only one more useless than Tali is Ashley. But that's my opinion. Trying Tali out is really the best thing you can do.
Sabotage is good for setting up tech combos.
With the tech vulnerability evolitions, and some other offensive tech powers, you have some very good combos.

What do you guys think about Tali in Insanity? she dies a lot?
I prefer to play the soldier class and play on Hardcore/Insanity. I also use Tali and Garrus the most out of my squad. I may use a "boring" class and play style but here is what I do.
Energy drain and overload to remove enemy shields/barriers, followed by adrenaline rush with incendiary ammo to finish the enemy off. The only enemy units that I found annoying were phantoms, but adrenaline rush helps with them. The only place that squad mates were dying a lot was defending the missile battery.
For the OP Liara is a very good squad mate to have because of singularity and stasis.
I don't utilize combos that much, simply prefer to use weapons. Combos though are very powerful. Just another way of playing if you do not want to try and pull of combos all the time.

Also, Tali / Edi is pretty nice combo for that last fight in London, since both have decoys to draw fire from marauders which seems to be biggest issue in that fight on insanity runs

I played infiltrator with a Harrier. Don't need teammates. But if I took Garrus for Overlord and Proximity Mine and EDI.

Playing as an infiltrator now and usually go out with Kaidan and either Liara or Tali, it's been...rather boring. Mass Effect with always be about the powers, to me. Blah blah blah, it all really depends on your class, and which enemies you're against.

Strange... my observations are exactly the opposite. Squadmates destroy everything with the typhoon.Bob Garbage wrote...
I tried the Typhoon on a couple squadmates and they didn't seem like they used it properly. Your squadmates tend to only shoot once or twice, so the charge up on the gun never seems to get to full out. In order for it to work it needs to be sprayed for almost several seconds, and the AI does not seem to do that.
I think with the typhoon garrus can solo the game for you when you spec him into weapon damage and armor piercing ammo only for himself.

Your squadmates fire their weapon for 10 seconds straight? .. weird.
If it's got enough health they shoot until it dies. 10 seconds is a guesstimate it's probably a bit lower. The overall mentality I see is shoot till it dies. For something with low health this isn't really a prolonged burst but I have witnessed target pivoting when targets are tightly clustered. But for bosses oh boy... Javik fired at Kai Leng during his entire recharge cycle and he got zero shields back as a result. Oddly the Typhoon is probably worse for squad mates on lower difficulties because the enemies have lower health.
