Well another year by and for me and my gaming hobby/habit it’s been a pretty good year on most fronts.

And now on to the best and worst of 2009 from my viewpoint

Worst game I bought and played
Champions Online -   When are companies going to learn that shard based MMOs don’t work (unless they are Guild Wars and are free). Hard to even call this an MMO. Once you get past the cool character creation system the game falls flatter than a watered down pancake.

Biggest Disappointment
Company of Heroes Tales of Valor – COH is my favorite strategy game of all time and this expansion was completely worthless. Let’s hope the game doesn’t continue in this pointless direction.

Best game I played that no one else has ever heard of
Drakensang – From Germany, deep and well put together sand box role playing game. Really fun.

Game I spent the most time playing
World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King – 5th year in a row, me and 13 million others

Worst trend in Gaming
Insert “Grand Theft Auto” something or other here. I just don’t get these games. Gratuitous violence, sadistic in nature and overly seedy are not attributes that attract me I guess

2nd Worst trend in Gaming
Insert “Call of Duty” something or other here. Single player campaign finished in 3 hours. I value good single player games and these don’t provide enough value for the cost

Most Overrated Game
Demon’s Souls -  Good game mind you, but game of the year it’s not. Too repetitive, too dark (not context, visibility) and a bit too hard.

Game I am most looking forward to in 2010
Star Wars The Old Republic- No other game comes even close to the anticipation levels I have for this one. Just please ship it before 2010 is over.

Runner-up Best Game of the Year
Batman Arkham Asylum – A game that breaks into my top 20 games of all time and easily the best experience I had on a console in 2009. Best superhero game ever. (played on PS3)

Game of the Year
Dragon Age: Origins- Since 1993 I have maintained that System Shock was my favorite game of all time (WoW excluded). It’s taken almost 20 years but finally a game has come along to change that. Dragon Age Origins is not only the best game of 2009 but my favorite game (WoW excluded) of all time. It has so one upped all other RPGs it’s not funny. Better story, better characters, better quests, better setting all tightly packaged together in a compelling narrative that has absolutely perfect pacing. I have not been this excited about a video game in a long time and urge all of you to play it through to the end, you won’t regret it. Long live the Grey Wardens!!!

And if what they are saying is true – that Dragon Age is simply a precursor to the type of MMO SWTOP will be, well my friends, give me a syringe and call it a night, a week, a month, well just call it in cause I’ll be done.
I was totally into my character and the people in my party. I really felt like I got to know them and developed strong ties to some and dislike for others. The game had a real emotional tie for me. The world of Ferelden is very rich with lore and I thought they did a great job with back story, history and culture. I love the racial tensions, the issues between the multiple deities, the battle of religion in people’s lives, who folks worship and the struggles of the land.

I believe DRO does the best job I’ve ever seen of actually giving the player believable choices that really mean something then having them deal with the consequences, even if they aren’t what the player intended. It was the first game I just let it go, didn’t reload to change my decisions, I just dealt with it and was amazed by the outcomes. On the contrary I thought the writing was very appropriate for the setting and the dialogue choices (for the most part) were meaningful and most importantly believable. I laughed, got angry  - and when I ordered the execution of Tern Logain I felt a degree of satisfaction like never experienced in a game before. The closest was Edward Diego in SS, but this was better.

100% spoken dialogue was awesome.  Graphics kicked ass although I wanted to be able to jump and swim but those are easy technical things I was able to overlook.

I completed a fair number of RPGs this year and DRO was such a stand out.  Other than my main level 80 toon in WoW which I have invested years in, I haven’t ever played a game where the pixels on the screen meant so much to me personally as they did in DRO. First time I was able to make a real connection with a digital person, a totally immersive experience.

thank you BioWare, keep it up

I'm going to have to disagree with you, the campaign wasn't that short for MW2, yes, it was short compared to RPG's such as Dragon Age. ALthough for a shooter, it wasn't thatt bad, considering you didnt sprint through as fast as you can. Also, the awesomeness (thats not a word! but it didn't underline it in red?!) should have made up for it.

I'm enjoying the game so far - however I had to stop because I can't access the downloadable content. When will these BioWare points be fixed?

Perhaps, but I cannot listen to the opinion of someone who's mind is tainted by the WOW curse.

I would disown my child if he were to play that game and actually enjoy it.

I agree with you for the most part, but WoW? Yuck. I wasted 4 years on it, and the longer I go without, the more I realize how much I actually hated that game. So bland, so boring, such a ridiculous timesink. The only good that came of it was my new group of friends, who all quit over the last 2 years.

The last thing I did was hard mode Ulduar 25, was in the best alliance guild on my server... and then one day I just stopped. Pretty sure it pissed them off to lose their holy priest with nary a word, but then I realized that I didn't owe a damn thing to these people. And when I came to this realization, I swear to god it was like a huge weight lifted off of me and I could breathe for the first time in years. Amazing. I can't even describe it.

I deluded myself into thinking these people needed/counted on me, and to quit would be selfish. I liked playing a healer, I liked teaching every mediocre priest people shunted toward me to heal like a pro... but I just didn't like the game itself anymore. From beta to Ulduar, and I don't miss it a bit.

Congratulations and welcome to the club! :D

PS: Now you must play all the other origins, get all epilogues, and listen to the conversations of the other party members. Yep, you still have a lot of game to enjoy ^_^

I disagree about MW2. Yes, the campaign is short (you need to post proof of 3 hours though, I call shennanigins). But the point of the campaign is to be the appetizer for the multiplayer.

Batman:AA (PS3 for me as well) was a stunning game. Granted it's not toally correct in story, but it's the best super hero game ever, IMO.

I would agree with your location of DA:O, it's my GMOY as well. I haven't spent this much time in a game and been wanting for more in a long time. I still find myself thinking about it during the day. It's a seriously great game.

I agree with basically all the games, with a little exception of wow... I won't lie, it's a nice game and kept me entertained for 3 years. But yeah, like Tassiaw, i realised that many of my "friends" were in fact only my friends because i played a healer. After realizing that, i felt a little disgusted. Not with the game, but with the people. And i don't intend on going back, thank you very much.

LOL Himura! You're so very cruel!

I'm glad I hated WoW in the first 5 minutes I tried it of the 10 free days Blizzard gave me, long ago. there are far better MMO's imho.

The Runner Up for me is Risen, a true gothic game by the Piranhas and amazingly stable since v1.00. I had 7 playthroughs on it before I started with DA.

Very well said, Bishop. I agree with you on everything you said about DA:O! And there's a lot more in it after the 1st time we finish it!

I agree on B:AA & Modern Warfare. It took me rather longer than three hours, but I can agree that the single-player campaign was FAR too short. Definitely agree on DA:O being the Game of the Year (for me at least).

MW2 was one of the most overrated games of the year. Its "spec ops" made dispensed with any vague pretenses the game had about "realism" with the introduction of juggernauts, and the single player campaign was ridiculously short. As for Demons' Souls... well, people raving about that... it's Diablo meets Ninja Gaiden with a heavy dose of BORING.

Dragon Age is my pick for the year closely followed by Assassin's Creed 2 (one of the most improved sequels in YEARS) and then Batman Arkham Asylum.

I tend to seperate single player's from MMOs when comparing games; they are such different experiences. After 6 years of playing MMOs only (not WoW though. Like RageGT I struggled to see the enchantment and had to force myself to continue through 10 days of trial), DA:O has changed all that and I won't be going back to MMOs any time soon - probably not even TOR though I feel compelled to support Bioware.

The trouble with MMOs is the online community can ruin the experience. Although not exactly an MMO, Demon Soul's is a current example. When reading reviews I got excited enough to consider buying a PS3, I loved the idea of communicating to other players by leaving grafitti type messages for those who came after. Already though the community is leaving misleading messages meant to lead players into traps rather than warning them of them. For some it may add to the experience - I quite enjoy having to always look over my shoulder in an Open PvP world - but I'm too old to enjoy an action that goes totally against the spirit of the game. Who needs to be reminded of sniggering, latent adolescents when they are playing in a fantasy world?

Back to DA:O definately GotY and probably GotD too (though Geralt is still sexier than either Zevron or Alistair :P).

I really really enjoyed it.

I was really disappointed with the first game, so I had tenuous hopes at best for this one. It completely restored my faith in the franchise. The sci-fi elements mixed in with such an interesting story set in a very important time of our history, it was honestly a thrill-ride. The ending left me with so many questions, but at least it ended better than the last game.

I can't wait to see what happens with Desmond and the assassins in the next game, I just hope it doesn't take too long to be released. I've been itching for some AC3 since I beat AC2.

I hate it because even though I can't play it, the game can't avoid me.  I'm sick of all the lame internet memes that have developed because of it like Leeroy Jenkins and all of the legion of idiots who keep repeating that thinking they're still funny.
I hate the game because of what it has done to PC gamers.  Before WOW there was everquest of course but not nearly as many people played that.  Most PC gamers played games for the sake of entertainmet.  WOW changed that, it has turned gaming into a social experiment.
All these people who play WOW on a daily basis, they don't play it because it's fun, they play it because it's satisfying.  They're satisfying the urge to become someone special in a world that doesn't matter as a way to make themselves feel better about a rather dull, routine, life they live in the real world.

Agree with Borschtbeet, the hatred people direct towards one game or another is troubling, it speaks to levels of insecurity and pride I believe.

And as for the above quote -- that's the biggest malarky I've ever read on a forum post. How you can generalize an entire social populous and demean their existence ? Tis more of a reflection on you than them I offer. I see the same types of sentiment offered on consoles. The Xbox fans hate the PS3 and vice versa and they all hate the Wii...Blah blah blah. Different strokes for different strokes.  There are a lot of really FUN things to do in WoW and I love the game for what it is, and the people I play with like it as well.  Don't throw your venom on them or the game, have some respect people.  I do believe the ananomity of the internet allows people to say things they'd never say to a person or get away with in public.

I play WoW, have a great family, 2 wonderful kids, a loving spouse and a very rich and culturally diverse life. And WoW doesnt detract from it, it enhances it and makes me happy. In fact, my husband and two sons play as well. And if thats a dull routine life, well then sign me up.

But back to the main point of my post, which was to congratulate all of us for playing a wonderful game in DAO. I played through as a mage and am thinking I'll roll a Dalish Rogue of some sorts next. My favorite quest line was the Dalish Whitefang quest.
