Well another year by and for me and my gaming hobby/habit it’s been a pretty good year on most fronts.
And now on to the best and worst of 2009 from my viewpoint
Worst game I bought and played
Champions Online - When are companies going to learn that shard based MMOs don’t work (unless they are Guild Wars and are free). Hard to even call this an MMO. Once you get past the cool character creation system the game falls flatter than a watered down pancake.
Biggest Disappointment
Company of Heroes Tales of Valor – COH is my favorite strategy game of all time and this expansion was completely worthless. Let’s hope the game doesn’t continue in this pointless direction.
Best game I played that no one else has ever heard of
Drakensang – From Germany, deep and well put together sand box role playing game. Really fun.
Game I spent the most time playing
World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King – 5th year in a row, me and 13 million others
Worst trend in Gaming
Insert “Grand Theft Auto” something or other here. I just don’t get these games. Gratuitous violence, sadistic in nature and overly seedy are not attributes that attract me I guess
2nd Worst trend in Gaming
Insert “Call of Duty” something or other here. Single player campaign finished in 3 hours. I value good single player games and these don’t provide enough value for the cost
Most Overrated Game
Demon’s Souls - Good game mind you, but game of the year it’s not. Too repetitive, too dark (not context, visibility) and a bit too hard.
Game I am most looking forward to in 2010
Star Wars The Old Republic- No other game comes even close to the anticipation levels I have for this one. Just please ship it before 2010 is over.
Runner-up Best Game of the Year
Batman Arkham Asylum – A game that breaks into my top 20 games of all time and easily the best experience I had on a console in 2009. Best superhero game ever. (played on PS3)
Game of the Year
Dragon Age: Origins- Since 1993 I have maintained that System Shock was my favorite game of all time (WoW excluded). It’s taken almost 20 years but finally a game has come along to change that. Dragon Age Origins is not only the best game of 2009 but my favorite game (WoW excluded) of all time. It has so one upped all other RPGs it’s not funny. Better story, better characters, better quests, better setting all tightly packaged together in a compelling narrative that has absolutely perfect pacing. I have not been this excited about a video game in a long time and urge all of you to play it through to the end, you won’t regret it. Long live the Grey Wardens!!!
And if what they are saying is true – that Dragon Age is simply a precursor to the type of MMO SWTOP will be, well my friends, give me a syringe and call it a night, a week, a month, well just call it in cause I’ll be done.
I was totally into my character and the people in my party. I really felt like I got to know them and developed strong ties to some and dislike for others. The game had a real emotional tie for me. The world of Ferelden is very rich with lore and I thought they did a great job with back story, history and culture. I love the racial tensions, the issues between the multiple deities, the battle of religion in people’s lives, who folks worship and the struggles of the land.
I believe DRO does the best job I’ve ever seen of actually giving the player believable choices that really mean something then having them deal with the consequences, even if they aren’t what the player intended. It was the first game I just let it go, didn’t reload to change my decisions, I just dealt with it and was amazed by the outcomes. On the contrary I thought the writing was very appropriate for the setting and the dialogue choices (for the most part) were meaningful and most importantly believable. I laughed, got angry - and when I ordered the execution of Tern Logain I felt a degree of satisfaction like never experienced in a game before. The closest was Edward Diego in SS, but this was better.
100% spoken dialogue was awesome. Graphics kicked ass although I wanted to be able to jump and swim but those are easy technical things I was able to overlook.
I completed a fair number of RPGs this year and DRO was such a stand out. Other than my main level 80 toon in WoW which I have invested years in, I haven’t ever played a game where the pixels on the screen meant so much to me personally as they did in DRO. First time I was able to make a real connection with a digital person, a totally immersive experience.
thank you BioWare, keep it up
