Ugh...was about to post about something but decided to change the post while reading what people consider RPG...

RPG - role-playing game - This is about becoming/creating character and playing as him/her by interacting with others by making decisions and living with the consequences of them (somebody dies in quest, somebody lives, etc). It's about living a story and by making choices it's about shaping it.

RPG IS NOT THE SAME AS GAME SYSTEM! If we go by this logic, the board games are RPG because in some of them you can level up, by this logic even starcraft is rpg not a strategy because you can level up/upgrade your armies shields etc. Even spore is rpg because at some point you can customize apperance...

People really need to learn what is considered to be "[/b]role-playing[/b]game" The main definition is even in the name...

And for the record. Diablo and other hack'n slash are not pure RPG games. Fantasy world, a lot of equipment and skills are not what is considered rpg. This is only the game system that can be included in fps, strategy, tps etc.

What is considered a pure RPG is having a big non-linear main quest and a lot of non-linear side quests. It's about interaction and choices people!

Yes. Definately. I miss the inventory,  mini-games, planetary exploration and non-combat character skills from ME1 in ME3. So I hope someone will hear my pleas and re-add more RPG elements in ME4 (and not remove even more of them).

Combat-wise I think ME3 is just fine. The skill trees had a good balance of accessibility and depth (just look at the MP forums and its build wars and tell me there's no depth here), the combat itself was pretty well balanced with few useless or overpowered skills, the gameplay varied alot based on what class you are, weapon variety was through the roof, it was fun.

ME1 really didnt work for me; the skill tree wasn't expansive, it was boring (1% more damage??? YAY!!!!). The reskinned armor and weapons whose sole difference was + stats were lazy. Half the powers were worthless, some were overpowered (Singularity anyone?) and others downright sucked because they just made combat longer and didnt make sense lore-wise (screw Immunity). Super space captain Shepard starting a covert special ops with a T-shirt and a nerfgun was just ridiculous. Enemies not using cover and just spamming Immunity or biotics while running circles around you at Mach III was not fun at all. The armor mods were cool, and I'd have liked them to be included on top of the customization.

Now, story-wise the series could really use some improvements. First, get rid of auto-dialog, or just use it for completely generic lines like ''okay'' or ''yes sir'' when there's really no need to bother with three different versions of ''yes''.

Second, more choices like Virmire's in ME1 or Tuchanka's in ME3. Here's a situation, make a choice, live with it. No easy way out like for the Geth-Quarian conflict.

Third, more real consequences for important choices. Keeping the Collector Base or not means... 25 War Assets. Wow, what a difference does that make. By contrast, keeping the Genophage cure or not in ME3 has much more repercussions in ME3, despite being a fairly minor choice at first. I won't ask for a Witcher 2-like game-changer for each acct ofthe game, but having those big choices actually count would be sweet.

QFT.

Although I do like leveling, inventory and all that stuff, this is what RPGs ought to be about on a very basic level.

Yes, that's why I liked Mass Effect because it was an RPG.

Spot on.

This means more full wheel dialogue would be needed. And more choices, more people to meet and worlds to explore.

I also agree, leveling, inventory and the like are a welcome sight to me when i play RPG's. This is what I want to come back for Mass Effect.

More RPG elements would be nice, but I'd rather Bioware just focus on Bioware. Not try and fulfill EA's status quo, to be RPG for the sake of it, the fans demands, to be a WoW or whatever killer, but simply, just be Bioware; the brand that made the ME trilogy, KotR, and other amazing games. If it's a pure RPG, I'll be content, and while I strongly want an SP RPG experience, more than anything I want them to craft the new game in their vision free from pressure of what it should be or has to be by any outside source.

Well, in a low-EMS playthrough the Collector Base choice is really important, since it determines your option when you get to the kid. The problem isn't so much with that choice as it's with the way EMS works -- the only way to avoid getting to a high-EMS state is to blow off a lot of the game, so most of us have to deliberately try if we want to get the low-EMS endings. (Or edit the save, of course).

I'd be down for that. But i think at it's core, a BioWare game is an RPG.

Even if it isn't an RPG, i think you're right. I don't want them to bend to EA's will, or to what the popular trend is. If it can't be an RPG, I want them to deliver an amazing storytelling experience. But I hope they do it in such a way that's not "the next shooter." Keep it unique. Keep it Bioware.
