Orlesian.

First of all, the game is set in Orlais. We're going to be hearing a ton of Orlesian accents anyway.

Second, the protagonists can't all be Ferelden. How can every hero in Thedas be Ferelden?

Gimme authentic Orlesian accents! Americans and they're French hating ways, can suck it!

I don't wanna be another bloody Fereldan again! If I can't have authenticity, I don't want DA3! *has a cry* :crying:

Why is it that whenever someone says something discrimatory, people must assume that they're Americans? Why does not liking a particular accent means that you hate that culture?

Orlesian. The PC is already going to be preset, they might as well go for authenticity for a character from Orlais.

Same as how most movie heroes are white males....

The most Orlesian accent known to man. Just so it annoys the xenophobes whining about how they can't handle an accent outside of the states or UK.

Anything but fake Orlesian ... A french speaking VA would be nice, I don't mind if he/she is from Quebec, or France or anywhere else, I just want a TRUE accent :)

I want one appropriate to his or her background.

Also, the idea that there's a neutral accent is horse pucky.

Scottish English. Om nom nom.

In all serious though, accent neutral with a upper-class tinge to it, much like Hawke.

Unless DA3 adopts the MGS3 approach, of course.

I dunno, any accent watered down is pretty neutral. Don't want to see a voice actor sounding like the moose from "Brother Bear" if we go the route of Canadian.:P If we did an Orlesian accent I would prefer to say, yah thats Orlesian... I think. With Hawke I find sometimes he sounds a bit british, but it could just be well enounciated English.

I accidentally clicked the stars on top of this thread and rated it when I was trying to go to the next page. Whoops!

Anyway, I hope the protagonist sounds like René form "'Allo 'Allo!"

"You stew-pid woman! Can you not see I am making this heretic girl repent?"

Or even better, our character could be a Fereldan who thinks he can speak Orlesian. That'd be great.

I hope Orlesian as I said in another thread. Other nations in Thedas should get to have their heroes too! Besides, Ferelden is not interesting enough to have three protags coming from it. Ferelden is the most boring country by far in Dragon Age. It's just your typical Anglo-Saxon England with some magic thrown in it, not like I haven't seen one of those before.

My list for the country I'd like to see DA:I's protag hail from is: Orlais, Tevinter Imperium, Anderfels and last but not least, Starkhaven, because scottish is awesome.

I love how almost everyone hates the Orlesian accent. I don't, but I wonder if for some it will make or break the game, full stop -- assuming the protagonist is Orlesian at all. I mean, if even before hearing the voice actors, would anyone refuse to purchase the game if it was known beforehand that the protagonist would have an Orlesian accent?

I might actually.  I've got nothing against the French, I actually really like the sound of the French language, but there's just something about when they try to speak English that drives me nuts.  Like I said on the first page I couldn't for the life of me say why it bugs me so much but it does.

It's xenophobic to find a particular sound annoying now? Sweet, I can now defend any and all Canadian music by declaring people who don't like it xenophobic.

I'd rather it be 'accent nuetral' than to have everyone speaking an accent. As if the PC is so used to hearing it they don't hear it anymore. Or if they have everyone speaking with French accents, they get people who's native language is French (I loved Riordan and Leliana's VAs) vs a bunch of people trying to fake an accent.

The accent should be as English was designed to be spoken, with the Southern United States low country accent. Failing that, Welsh would be nice.

Welsh would be distracting if you didn't have any strong connection to elves, like being raised by them, though.

The REALLY silly thing about this whole conversation is that if our character is a native Orlesian and the game is set in Orlais, chances are we will be speaking to tons of other native Orlesians... so why the heck would they still be speaking the Common tongue? Wouldn't two natives of a country, just talking to one another, be talking their native language?

It seems silly to me. Unless we are going to assume everyone who has an Orlesian accent is secretly speaking Orlesian... but then, can we assume if we have a Ferelden native in our party like Cullen, that they understand everything that is being said? Will everyone become bi-lingual all of a sudden, just like everyone became bi-sexual?

Personally (and this is the RPG/PnP fan in me), I'd rather see a character that only spoke the Common tongue and then had a background, where they could be from Orlais (and be able to speak Orlesian), Tevinter (in which case you speak Arcanum) or Ferelden (in which case you only speak Common, but may get another skill/bonus that cancels this out, or even you get a free language point to spend to learn another language). Then you could also have other languages you could learn, like Dalish, Ancient Dwarven, Rivani, Antivaan, Kossith, etc.

This would open up extra dialogue options, quests and information, as you would be able to overhear different things in other languages, where before, your character would be unable to understand what was being said.

Didn't mean to get things quite so sidetracked, but I think that would be a much better way of handling languages than giving us a locked-down Orlesian who, for some reason, is always speaking Common (English), even though the are in Orlais (France).

Actually after seeing the "script" marks in Varric's story cut scenes I actually assumed Common tongue wasn't English. I hear it as English because my Protagonist speas that language... if that makes any sense,

I am pretty sure the language is Tevene (Tevine?)

I assume that most characters we meet will have some vague understanding of the Common tongue since it's the trade language.

Why assume that a bunch of characters speaking English are using the 'common tongue?' Wouldn't it make more sense that they're speaking their native language and we're getting a translation?

Especially since the characters speak a different language depending on the localization you get.

It's Arcanum.
