If we are getting a preset background of being Orlesian (if - obviously that's not established 100%) then the protag should sound Orlesian.

My thoughts exactly. However if we can avoid the sillier end of the French accent spectrum, I'd be happier. A female Orlesian protagonist need not sound like Marjolaine, a character whose accent I always thought was unintentionally comical, but also incredibly phony sounding...

if we are actual Orlesian I expect an Orlesian accent. If we are Fereldan I expect a Fereldan accent.

Whatever it is I am sure it will grow on me a couple hours in even if I don't initially like it.

A French accent would be good if the right person was chosen for it.

However, I would prefer Irish or Scottish.

Hopefully it will grow on me too, even if I find it annoying initially.

It took me a long time not to find Mark Meer's BroShep completely irritating. I'm still not a big fan, even though his performance became less robotic (but no less nasally) with each game. Jennifer Hale's FemmeShep on the other hand was love upon first hearing!

Just hoping we don't get another protagonist... who is also from Ferelden. I just find it strange we can't have someone from a different background.

That said, about the accents... Let's say Tevinter, just for gitz and shizzles (and hipster points)...
I don't think we even ever hear a Tevinter accent... :/

Well--there are Tevindes in DA2 with a distinct accent, but they're all voiced by the SAME GUY.  (The guy who voiced Corypheus.)  I actually really like his accent, he slurs slightly on some words so it's quite interesting.  Can't place the source, though.  The only other major Tevinde characters (Danarius and Caladrius) were American Midwesternish.

I honestly don't care about the accent as long as it isn't too heavy. I'm sure it will grow on me.

Ideally, in a semi-perfect world, optional accents, possibly 2 or 3.

Origin 1 (Orlesian background)- Orlesian
Origin 2 (Refugee background/classic)- Fereldan/English
Origin 3 (Other background)- Anderfels, Nevarran, Antivan or Rivaini

In a not-so perfect, limited world, Orlesian. I'm tired of Fereldan characters, I'm tired of my characters being psuedo-English (with all due love to real world cultures, being American and all), I just want some darn diversity in my characters, even if that's ETHNIC diversity, and I'd like that acknowledged instead of head-canon for once (even if it's just in a few dialogues and that's it). Orlesian, Antivan, Rivaini, Anderfels, Tevinter, Nevarra (I'd suggest the Welsh Dalish accent too but we're only humans this time around so...)...I'm tired of the same old wet dog place known as Fereldan. It's not like other nations in Thedas are incapable of producing in-game protagonists unless there's some sort of mass conspiracy going on where Fereldan is the center of the universe and every other nation is a Disneyland exhibit (neo-sensationalism/imperialism ala video game style). In seriousness though let's give ol' Fereldan a break! .__.

... and I find it strange that we can't play as an elf, dwarf, or Maker forbid, a Qunari (the horned giant race belonging to the Qun; don't call them Kossith, the devs will get upset;)). I hope we aren't stuck playing as human PCs for the rest of the franchise...

Did Leliana really sound so silly? I mean, her accent, not all that crazy "The Maker is talking to me." stuff.

I just really don't want to play as an Orlesian or a Fereldan. I'd like to be from elsewhere. Just hoping for a new twist here folks, nothing against Fereldans or Orlesians.

Is there some source that tells us that Orlesians don't speak Common, or are you just assuming that because they sound French, and the source of French accents in the real world is the French language?

Here you go: link

Not necessarily French, but not English either.

Thanks for the link.

So, most Orlesians can speak Common, so if we have a party consisting of people from a variety of backgrounds, it will make sense for Orlesians to speak to us in Common.

I agree it would be weird for Orlesians to address an Orlesian PC by himself in Common (unless they don't know the PC is Orlesian), but when speaking to the group speaking Orlesian would be rude and exlcusive.

And I reiterate my desire preference for an Orlesian accent.

Sylvius,

My real problem is the silliness we will see with ambient conversations.

Walking through an Orlesian marketplace, will we see two Orlesians having a conversation with each other in Common? The same for an inn... will they be singing drinking songs in a language that is not their native? Will the enemies we fight be cursing us in English (excuse me, Common) with a thick accent?

None of those things make sense. And if they do have those types of interactions in Orlesian (French), how will we, the player, understand it, when our character should (as a native Orlesian?)

I would accept subtitles like in DE:HR as a viable solution, but I really haven't heard that tossed around as a viable reality.

A sexy British accent is all I want, if the main protagonist has to be voiced.

If the entire game doesn't sound like this, I'll be so disappointed.

No, those should be in Orlesian.  They should take their cue from the old Castle Wolfenstein titles where everything was in German.

None of those things make sense. And if they do have those types of interactions in Orlesian (French), how will we, the player, understand it, when our character should (as a native Orlesian?)

Now that's a good point.  You're right that an Orlesian PC should speak Orlesian.  As such, they would either need to translate the entire game (as you've suggested), or have a non-Orlesian PC.

But even if they do translate the entire game, I see no reason not maintain the French accent for Orlesians.

And if the PC isn't Orlesian, then my previous suggestion of just having a lot of content be in untranslated French stands.

Orlesian-Fereldan would acceptable.

Though I would prefer something like Tevinter, which is very Fereldan, coincidentally.

I've already said that in an other topic but, Marjolaine and Isolde VA are not french. It is, for me, the reason they sounded awfull. On the other hand, Leliana and Riordan sounded "right" even for my poor french ears.
I don't mind orlesian accent, but it must be a real accent not a fake one. Or an accent from the anderfells voiced by a German actor... etc ...

I'm not fussed one way or another... with the usual disclaimer. If I prefer one voice to another, I'll play that background more often. For example, if we play a character with an Orlesian accent, I will always play as a male PC. If we play as someone from Navarra, I'll play as a female. Fereldan or Rivaini, it could go either way.
