I don't mind wearing robes, but at least a little bit of variety is in order. Mages should get as many "costume" upgrades as the melee classes.

This is why I love mods. With any luck, DA3 will include more variety for the mages aside from a change in color.

I'd like to see different classes for mage armour.

Robes: Robes are the classic mage gear, for standing in the back and casting spells. They have buffs to magic damage and the amount of mana, but most importantly provide protection against spells.

Lightly Armoured Robes: These are similiar to normal robes, except for the fact the the entire upper body has protective padding. These provide resistance gainst arrows, minor spell protection and minor protection against melee weapons.

Mage Armour: Very heavy steel armour on the upper body protecting all vital organs. The limbs are protected by light armour so as not to greatly reduce mobility. The mage gets a massive boost to constitution and defence against all attacks. But also incures penalities to magic damage and will power.

Tactical Gear: These are not long battle dresses, but a mixture of studded leather and chain mail. The mage still maintains some mobility, but also gains a few buffs to melee attacks. Non of the buffs to magic damage and willpower that robes and lightly armoured roebs have.

Paladin Armour: This greatly slows down the mage, but enables them to take more hits and provides boost to all healing and buffing spells. There are penalities to destructive and debuffing spells. Mages wearking Paladin Armour can function as a front line tank.

Stealth Gear: Ordinary mage robes have much higher armour rating than stealth gear. But stealth gear provides mages with a unique advantage. Being able to cast spells without drawing attention to themselves. Whilst the gear is equipped, the mage has the "cloak" (duration dependant on "cunning" stat).

I go with awaking-anders reasons for the "dresses" really what self respecting mage doesn't wear robes. that being said more manly robes would be nice.

I liked DA2's mage gear! A good half-ish of the mage armours were pants, including the ultimate one. I personally like and prefer robes, but I think DA2 had a good mix!

More mage variety would be nice, whether it be skirt or pants, things that look different in more than just color would be appreciated.

I would love more variety for mages. One of the few reasons why I get the arcane warrior special is because I dislike how the mage clothings look (Before realizing how awesome that spec was).

They manage to have all your Mage companions to have very stylish designs except your hawk...incorporate those to pc bio. In DA2 I did manage to get this pretty decent looking non-champion/DLC Mage clothing from a drop that in fact wasn't even a dress they were pants .. The stats wernt even that good ..!! :D

I never minded the mage robes, they usually had decent designs to them.

I found most of Hawke's armor designs for mage's to be a bit weird though, namely the Champions robes and some of the DLC robe choices. I think those were a bit too much.

This, definitely this! That would go great with the "Rogue mage" specialization which would be my ideal. Image IPB

I hope with the new custom armor system the robes will be better. I would like to see a mix of the old DA:O and DA2 styles with the new styles. I just hope that the new styles are simple yet tasteful maybe something like low v-neck and sleeveless robe in black with just a little aging along the arms and bottom of the skirt, and a belt and some silver jewelry for color.

I hope mages armor is done better. Having played DAO and obtained the Warden Commander's armor of Sophia Dryden I would have loved to have my mage wear them. But I gather that DA3 is coming up with a solution to this.

A robe is a robe, a dress is a dress. And a long tunic belted at the waist is...a long tunic belted at the waist. Just because a garment extends beyond the waist does not mean it is immediately a dress.

Hopefully there will be a mix of options for however you want to garb your mage. Personally, I was quite fond of Aldenon's Vestments from mage pack 2.

I'm tired of robes, they're just so... boring. I'd like pants, and bits of mail and plate, like the mage Champion's gear, that was awesome, despite the spikyness.

@Abraham_uk: Those are some great suggestions. I'd love to see the armour to be improved as well. The same robes with different colours is just an indicator of laziness to me.

I like the armour from the item packs. The Fugitives Mantle and Apostates Mask were my favourite pieces.

There should be a decent mix.

Robes make sense for the more established traditions of Tevinter and the Circles - where the special dress serve to mark the mage's special status, whether that status is high or low.

Other, more normal, clothing makes sense as the creation of apostates, or the followers of other magical traditions.

And Malcolm's gear.  I also really loved the Champion's armor.  I can understand it not fitting all mages, but my Hawke was a ruthless and deadly maleficar.  All that spiky metal was perfect.

Though it's not just mage robes, even though they suffer from it the worst.  More visual distinction in all the armors, regardless of class, would be nice.

Robes make sense for circle mages, as a uniform to identify them and their minimal protection makes it easier for the templars to shank em.

However seeing apostates running around in them is iffy, as the first thing a newly escaped mage should do it ditch their robes and dress as normaly as possible to blend in.
