The game completely glossed over the fact that it was Bethany's fault that your family had to keep on moving around (Malcolm obvious knew what he was doing so it wasn't him).  It stands to reason to all my Hawke's relationships with people in wherever they were (romantic or otherwise) would have been habitually ruined by Bethany.  I had plenty of reason to resent Bethany and be rivals with her (even if being mage is obvious not her fault).  The game forces you into friendship and being uber protective of Bethany when it is quite possible that Hawke should not feel that way.

From my perspective that just made the sibling relationship even deeper, as it shows how my Hawke loved Bethany despite all the trouble she caused.  On the other hand, I can certainly see how some people wouldn't like her because of this.  They should have had more rivalry options for people with that opinion.

How does it make it deeper?  You can still have Bethany executed at the end of the game when you get your first outright chance to turn on her.  It just makes your character seem insane for being intensely anti-mage enough to execute your mage sister from the beginning yet standing up for Bethany when Wesley calls her out.  They shouldn't have forced your Hawke to have any preconceived relationship with Bethany.  You should have had the option to stand up for her if you wanted to and the option to not support her if that was your thing.  In Origins, you could have Shianni get victimized and turn a blind eye for money.  You could let your own father get murdered in a blood magic ritual for power.  In fact you could be jerk to everyone in the Origin and let them know you were incredibly glad to leave them behind.  Just because they are family doesn't mean you have to like them or stand up for them.  Railroading the friendship with Bethany just seemed to fake to take seriously.

That's why I said, "On the other hand, I can certainly see how some people wouldn't like her
because of this.  They should have had more rivalry options for people
with that opinion."  I wasn't saying that the railroading made the relationship deeper.  I am opposed to railroading in any in-game relationship.  I was merely commenting that the fact Bethany has caused such problems in the past makes the relationship deeper for those who wish to follow the friend path with her, since it shows that Hawke values their relationship too much to be bothered by these things.

Bethany was just adorable. Sure she had the personality of a flat soda but Carver grated too much on my nerves.

One that perished in an envitable horrible ogre-related death is preferred. Said death gains two additional affection points if it occurs within five minutes of the games beginning.

Definately. It would give me more of an inititive to try to make the character more of a family type of closeness.

I liked it in DA2. I picked on Carver big brother style and was overprotective big brother with Bethany and I got way more attached to those characters just because of a last name than I did Aveline or Fenris or whoever else except like Merrill and Sebastian. Loved those 2.

Yeah, Bethany totally resonated with me, since I'm an older brother IRL.  Maybe a lot of the people who dislike her never had the older sibling protective instinct thing and thus see her as just a whiny pest?

Thats probably what it is. I got to simulate having less ****bag type of siblings.

oldest child right here.  with a younger brother and a younger sister that were pretty much as many years younger than me as hawke's sibs were to her.

and while the protective older sister thing made sense to me when me and my kid siblings were like, TWELVE, once we all started becoming GROWN-UPS, we put on our big-girl panties and acted accordingly.
