Yeah, no kidding. Why not call it "Lordring" or something if we intended it to be a tribute? Silly.

Well "Thedas", the continent that Ferelden is on, had it's origins in shorthand... "the da setting".... so anything's possible I guess.

If you take the first letter of every word in every book of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, enter them into a computer, and let a random number generator pull out eleven of those letters, you might spell David Gaider.

True story.

And on topic, of course you'd say it is only coincidence, after all, who'd want to pay royalties, as opposed to HOMAGE?Image IPB
What is with these forums? sheesh can't even edit a post without it duplicating itself!!

Have to agree with the Bioware folks..there are anagram applications on the Net..you can pretty much create what you wish with those with the letters from anything else.

Dragon Age: Origins is a jewel unto itself, its original and its a good game. I closed betaed and played Lotro...no comparison. Lotro = mmo DA:O = rpg.

DA:O definitely a more challenging and interesting game. :)

I found substantially more similarities between Dragon Age: Origins and A Song of Ice and Fire than DAO:O has with LOTR. However Bioware has been working with some classic archetypes both historically and in fantasy fiction so it would be easy to draw reasonable comparisons with some aspects of the best known 'classic' work in the fantasy field.

However, as most everyone could agree, similarity does not mean it was intentionally sourced from LOTR or A Song of Ice and Fire (among others). I could compare the Sun with a tomato for both are round and have reddish hues. However it doesn't mean whatever source wrote our design documents stole the sun from the tomato.

i think its good if it is intended as a tribute, LOTR is fantastic after all both the films and the books. most fantasy games have something from LOTR, it set such a good base its incredibly difficult to not follow it in some way, and i think its only a good thing.

Its such a shame that LOTR hasn't been made into a really good game up to this point, ive played the old ps2 games of it and they were great at the time but it could make for a fantastic RPG or RTS game(yes i know there are some, but they are not up to scratch imo).

to be completely honest i do believe this was unintentional but the funny thing is the name "Lothering" always reminded me of LotR but for some reason i couldnt make out why.. and now i think i've found the answer:)

i seemed to have found the unintended pattern and not even realize it

LOL, I actually just rewatched all three movies with my parents the other day and was playing this game while I was watching and realized how incredibly similar the two are. If only we had hobbits...

If by similar, you mean DAO is a very uninspired none-too-subtle "homage" to LOTR (blatant rip-off would be too strong, but vry apropriate with just a few tweaks), then yeah.

Theres the random encounter with two dead elves (frodo + sam) and 9 wraiths. One of the bodies has a note saying "we should have just taken the flying eagles"

Now thats what i call a reference to LotR

Actually, the name came from the movie "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" as it is explained on the DAWiki:

http://dragonage.wik...othering#Trivia

But none the less, a nice and funny find.
And I must agree with most posters here that in the general storystyle, it does have similarities to the LotR movies, but not the games.

Here David, to save you the trouble, I'll just link to your previous response where you explained the Lothering name:

Linky

"That's because it has nothing to do with Lord of the Rings.

I'd
just watched "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" the night before, in
fact, and needed a name for the village. "Loathing" didn't quite work.
In fact, for a while we jokingly referred to the plot there as "Fear
and Lothering in Ferelden". But that was corny.

Don't say I never did anything for you :P

edit: meh... it takes me so long to actually post. People ninja me by 20 minutes.
Do I get the slowest poster ever award?

The pattern that is there is the fact that the whole genre of games we call RPG's today came from the pen and paper games inspired by Tolkien's trilogy. The whole idea of a party based adventure into forgotten realms (literally) was born out of the Lord Of The Rings. It should look similar, but is not intended and actually should be a confirmation to Bioware of the game's success.

Your a more honest man than I. I would have said, "Yeah, yeah, totally, you got me, it was all a clever tribute all along, I can't believe you plebs only just figured it out. You know, there are 12 more hidden tributes, and when you decode them all you get a meta-tribute that unlocks a new thing", and then sat back and grinned as the gullible scrambled to find them all. :P
