Mass Effect: Battlefield .... I can see it now...

64 players log onto a server... "we're all on the same team? npcs better be hard!"

*Harbinger and Co Land*
*3 minutes later*
*Harbinger spawn camps the allied spawn points*

*64 players rage quit*

What if they shift to Cryengine 3? Our PCs will go up in flames.

I beg to differ.  The CE3 engine Scales exteremely well to most PC requirements and runs exceedingly well on current consoles and is MADE to accomodate them. Not to mention they have some kickass tools too.

I've not been that impressed with the Frostbite engines. Yeah, they look shiny, but it's taken Dice a year or better to work out the bugs. And their idea of a fix at times has been, "make the hit box bigger".  Of course, I'm over simplifying when I say that.

I would imagine that the FBe2 license is considerably cheaper than the CE3 license that's topping somewhere around $750K.

if you dont want to pay for the license fees.....Make your own engine...thats what blizzard has done for all there games....im pretty sure it saves big time money in the long run

On R&D on a game engine on that calibre?  hehe.. not likely. By the time you build it and debug it, build a game on it and debug it again?  no.  R&D typically goes into the several millions.

several millions is chump change now when it comes to the vidoe game industry, this industry rivals the movie industry and games are costing upwards of a million to make

Anyone every play phantom dust?  I think the same concept could work in a pvp for Mass Effect.  Its like a deck building card game, like Magic The Gathering, but functions like a 3rd person shooter.

Many people said this about multiplayer in general.

Creaming just imagining Mass Effect in the frostbite engine.

PVP will be increadibly difficult to balance. Stasis? Pull? Shield boost? Homing grenade?

No.
Building an engine costs way the hell more than licensing one.
Out of the 6 years of Battlefield 3's development, 4 were used only to make the engine.
Its why high quality indie's are more frequent than before, because they don't have to break their piggy bank for building the engine.
The Unreal Engine 3 costs 99$ to license, and after your first 50k dollars they take from you 25% royalties.
I'd say that's a damn good deal.
Or you can buy the Engine with the source code for 750k like Bioware did.
And its still cheaper than making an engine.
Oh and for anyone saying that the UE3 is outdated:

Its being constantly updated, its not the same engine that it was at release.
ME3 could look that way... If the PS3 and Xbox had the power of a GTX 680.

As long as they focus on improving Frostbites' facial expressions then I'm happy. In game the soldiers seem to switch between perfectly calm and full on scream at the pull of the trigger.

That's because its not as important.
In cutscenes, where you would most likely notice, it works perfectly.

Hopefully it will mean a return to the larger levels as seen in ME1.
Which will be a good thing.

I was kinda hoping for Unreal engine 4 as it'll continue the mass effect texture and feeling but I guess frostbite isn't the worst to be on. If it went to crytek, I think everyone's pc's would explode.

If its going to be on next gen consoles then it won't be out till late 2014 early 2015 at the earliest.

Idk about PS but xbox 720 won't be out till 2014. As for gameplay they won't leave SP that's what made ME and that's what will keep making ME sure MP is fun and there might be more stuff in ME4 for MP but SP will remain their core regardless of how many dlcs they released for SP in ME3

Why do I have to buy another console to play a franchise I developed an interest in? Not every one of us is made out of money. I guess this will be one game I won't have sadly.....Oh well. The planet keeps spinning.

On a side note: I hope the gameplay isn't changed too much if I am able to get it. I doubt they'd put in PvP, but if they do I think I'll just find another video game to keep me busy.

Ehhh, I'm not really that excited for Frostbite engine becuase i have long been a fan of the Unreal Engine series. out of all the games i played, games using Unreal where the most stable.
And i guess EA really wants more games on their engine-baby that they are so protective of.

Because technology advances as consoles need to be ugraded to handle it. If we didn't move on we'd still be playing Pong...

As it is, consoles hold back the development of new technologies. This generation in particular, as it's been extremely long.

More likely because it is cheaper than anything compareable...

I'm a 100% positive that Bioware isn't paying the same fee they would have if this was say the current Cryengine....

re: Console development
As mentioned, this was a relatively long console age as we have at LEAST another year before Ps4 and/or Xbox720 come out and games on consoles are starting to be very noticeable in difference with PC equivalents

How does does utilizing a new, better engine instantly mean PvP is confirmed?

People are silly.

Wut?

No. Current consoles will not be able to run this. So it's next-gen consoles, or current-gen PCs. Many of us already have PCs capable of running it.

you do know FB2 runs alot of games on xbox...
