Now that Bioware has said that Shepard won't star in ME4, who do you think will be the protagonist? I would love to play a Turian or another human.

With how angry I am with the huge disapointment the conclusion of the trilogy was, I don't want another mass effect game. They are asking what we want in the next game, well I don't want a next game.

Mass Effect was made by the characters it created and shaped.Mass Effect 4 wont be anything of a shell of the name without Shepard in it.So really I don't care who the main character is,since i cant have my shepard and my liara fighting to defend the galaxy one more time I guess i would settle for their children.

Isn't Shepard the biggest Mary Sue of all times? I mean come on, we all like the brave soldier, but it's like you said there's no Universe before or after Shepard.

As for the new protagonist, custom character with background story depending on race, profession or both sounds great. Hey, there's a nice possibility I just realised: imagine that there's a team of let's say three to five predefined characters, all of which are playable, it's for you to choose which one's perspective fits you the most and you can switch between them during gameplay B)

I'd be fine with a human, but I'd really like to play a Turian or Asari.

I thought a neat idea would be to have the male protagonist be a Turian and the female be an Asari, each with their own background ala DA:O.

I have to say, i'm disappointed. After EA (Electronic Arts) acquired BW, they:
-messed up ME3 ending
-BW founders quit (and ofc thanked to EA for bla bla)
-now they wanna do ME4? EA doesn't care about gaming community, they worship only $$ god
I'm afraid, the ME universe as i knew it is gone, they should choose other name for new game, not Mass Effect 4. For me, it sounds just like EA's goldmine. For the sake of all dedicated ME fans,i hope, i'm very mistaken, but i worry, i'm not.

This i have to 100% agree with, i think mass effect i think commander shephard, you cannot have mass effect without Shephard it would be like halo without the Masterchief, by all means bioware should use the universe/history/cultures etc of what they have setup but they need to call the game something else entirely

Like Halo: ODST and Halo: Reach, you mean? :innocent: But I have to agree, unless it would be a direct continuation of story from ME3 (which I doubt and hope not) a different title is needed. Otherwise that's Mass Effect 4: The Search for Shep. But we're getting a bit offtopic.

The next protagonist should be less omnipotent, imo. We saw what's life of a high-ranked military officer from space like. Maybe now we should start small? With a civilian accidentaly wrapped in something definitely exceeding his competence, maybe? That sounds like fun. Like a krogan teenager discovering rachni egg in his locker one day xD

What we need is a character creator with the ability to choose your species as the protagonist. Sort of like how DA origins had multiple backgrounds, they could do the same sort of thing for ME4. Imagine being able to choose a Human, Asari, Turian, Drell, Quarian or mayhap even a Geth as your protagonist!

The galaxy and background are rich enough that Shepard is not necessary to keep the plot interesting. I'd also like to see some plot relating to the Leviathans.

The problem with ME universe is that what comes after ME3 is taboo, and ME1 takes place only 35 years after discovering prothean ruins by human race. It gives only 38 years of timeline to exploit, and for that whole time the player will have a feeling that whatever he does may have little effect on the future, because everything during these 38 years is just slowly sliding to the armageddon of 2186. It's right-bounded interval then. A very short interval.

Still, they never actually used the title Mass Effect 4, morever, Yanick Roy stated that the triogy is concluded and they do not wish to utilize it anymore. One website published the following "ME4 logo":

Image IPB

In my opinion, it's misleading. The consecutive number and even more damaged background behind "4"  suggests the story takes place after ME3, what was never confirmed so far.

I think if the developers wish to keep ME universe right-bounded, and set the story before ME3, a difficult task lays before them. A task to convince the players they anything still matters in the past, even thought they know what future awaits the universe.

Exactly what I've been wondering for a while. Prequels are restricted by time and everyone knowing what's going to happen, though ME3 took liberties with the series' own canon so the latter might be less of a problem. Sequels are problematic because the writers don't actually know what sort of galaxy it is post-ME3. That doesn't leave an awful lot so I wouldn't be surprised if it's contemporary with ME1-3, and possibly just a Reaper war shooter if they're feeling really unimaginative. Shame, really. If ME3 had taken a different turn and ended with Shepard finally being taken seriously about the Reapers by the galaxy in general and the Council in particular (c'mon, who'd have loved to have seen that turian have to eat his words? Everybody!) then future games could have continued the established Reaper conflict with all new characters.
