I feel stupid for asking this. But what does "hardened" mean? And how can you tell if you have a character hardened? I apologize for the newb question. But I just couldn't seem to figure it out on my own.

It refers to personal quests for some companions where their general outlook on life may be changed by the players response. The companion suffers a personal crisis of concience and thus open to suggestion from the player to accept a "softer" or "harder" outlook on life.

For Leliana this happens after you have met Marjolaine. The player can either tell Leliana to go with her chantry beliefs (non-hardened) or accept herself as a rogue and not fear her more bloodthirsty sides (hardened). For Alistair this happens after the quest with Goldanna.

/Edit. The only way you can see if a companion is hardened or not, is from the next conversation when they will tell you they have accepted what you said. There will also some new dialogue options at certain events, depending on whether the companion is hardened or not.

Yep, basically you're toughening up either Alistair or Leliana and nudging them towards a less naive, more cynical worldview.

Once your Caterpie has reached level 7 you can have it evolve into Metapod. When you're in a battle choose Metapod, press the "Attack" button and select "Harden".
