IMO, this is pretty awesome. the paraphrase dialogue system is one of the most immersive tools used in video games.

Yeah, it was nice. In ME1 and ME2, not the bare bones left in ME3.

Yeah, I agree. After Drew left, it seemed like the team deviated more and more from using the dialogue system to its full potential.

Best writer for the series. Sad he left before ME3. With him, the fiasco (Plot Holes included) that was ME3 probably would of been reverted and the series may have gotten a solemn, well needed close.

That's cool, I guess.

But shouldn't the patent technically go to Casey? Or did he also get it but not mention it?

I'm not sure, it looks like he's the only name on that certificate.

Odd, since Drew himself said the ending was essentially what had been planned since the beginning.

And on the topic, meh. I don't care for the paraphrase system at all. Good for him, though.

Good for Drew I guess :)
But I'm not a big fan of software patents

I'm pretty sure Drew intended for Dark energy to make a larger impact and or have larger implications in ME3 (Reaper Motivations). He will obviously side with the ME3 ending to not tarnish what the other Devs came up with. He'd probably receive back lash from the company.

I think it was combination of multiple things.

#1 would be the heavily increased amount of dialouges to create in the same developement time as ME2. Just compare the size of TLK file in ME2 folder with the same file in ME3 folder. It's much, MUCH bigger despite the game not being longer. All the variables, different characters, different scenarios and 'substitue' characters increased the number of lines heavily so cuts had to be made in number of options players were able to pick. More options would bloat the line-count even more and EA clearly wasn't willing to give ME3 any single day more of developement. This reason I would understand

#2 is their desire to have more cinematic cameras and action going on in the conversations. When you have the characters moving around a lot, the dialogue has to accomodate that, otherwise the characters would need to stop walking each time an option pops up, if they didn't, the animation would ran out. This reason I wouldn't agree with at all. Pretty cinematics shouldn't come before and at the expense of character customization

#3 is what Patrick Weekes said how they wanted to limit 'pointless/fluff' choices, but I don't really buy this one. Sounds like an excuse for the players after they decided to have less options becase of reason #1 and #2. But if it's true, it ain't good either even if just for the fact that the first two games with THE SAME CHARACTER had those fluff options. If you have the same character, you shouldn't suddenly limit the way we are able to RP him/her. New character in new game? Sure, limit the dialogue choices all you want or make the system completly different (maybe something more like Alpha Protocol for example), but this shouldn't be done with the same character.

It's one of the changes that bug me the most in ME3.

Err...what implications does this have?

Do people have to pay Drew K. money to use Mass Effect 1 style dialog wheels or something?

mass effect ... the double edged sword of our time.

what comes to my mind .. if drew k is the main patent holder and he is no longer a member of the mass effect team - is bioware still allowed to use the system in future mass effect games?

speculations.

That would be ridiculous. It's far too simple an idea.

Catalyst was the entire plot of the third game.

The Catalyst comprised 33% of the time we've spent in this series.

That's what a patent does though, makes people have to pay monetarily to use an intellectual property of another person.

Have you seen Apple and Samsung patents?

Anything involving technology + patents tends to become stupid. The system wasn't designed for modern uses in code, data, design etc.
