Doesn't this mean Bioware can't use it for the Mass Effect games anymore without Drew's permission seeing as he does not work at Bioware any more? They better stay on his good side...

That's what a patent does though, makes people have to pay monetarily to use an intellectual property of another person.

We don't know what exactly they patented. It's probably more involved. It would be downright comedic to take money from people just for using paraphrasing.

I mean, any RPG with a voiced protagonist is going to do that. You don't want to put down exactly what the character will say word for word. It can't be done that way.

What if it's a whole mouthful? You have to summarize and the only way to do that is by paraphrasing.

They couldn't patent just that general concept, could they?

Uh... That's bad. It means everyone will have to pay him or Bioware royalties just to use a similar system. That means that just about no one else will do it because they won't want to pay to do so.

In short, he just made sure that no one else uses it. Selfish git.

Best writer for the series. Sad he left before ME3. With him, the fiasco (Plot Holes included) that was ME3 probably would of been reverted and the series may have gotten a solemn, well needed close.

He left during the early stages of ME2 IIRC.

Half the patents apple has are based on vauge general concepts, nothing is beyond reason to havde a patent. Hell, even stuff like buying stuff through an app, clickable email  interfaces, and pulling down a tag to refresh a page similar to how apples twitter app works.

Or their freaking slide-to-unlock which they sued Samsung over.

That sh*t is truly unbelievable.

Thank the Maker the Court reversed the Sansung ban.

Err...what implications does this have?

Do people have to pay Drew K. money to use Mass Effect 1 style dialog wheels or something?

Drew sayz:
A. "Perhaps.  I control the patents."
B. "How do you like my script now, Bioware?"
C. "I want ten million dollars every year for the rest of my life."

(In Morgan Freeman Voice) Good luck.

Interesting to see if this system will be used outside of Dragon Age and Mass Effect in the future now that it's patented.

Deus Ex:HR did that and it worked pretty fine - you had to hover with the cursor over the dialogue option (they still had tags like "logical" or "friendly" etc.) to see the whole text.

Dark Energy was scrapped.

But why did they even bring it up in the first place in ME2? They could've given us any reason why Tali was on that planet. I don't know, the "ominous phenomenon that causes suns to die out" thing always seemed odd to me...

I'm pretty sure Drew intended for Dark energy to make a larger impact and or have larger implications in ME3 (Reaper Motivations). He will obviously side with the ME3 ending to not tarnish what the other Devs came up with. He'd probably receive back lash from the company.

No.

He did not.

Dark Energy was scrapped.

It was mentioned.

Three

Times

In 100 hours of gameplay.

Three.

Times.

Yes.

He really did.

It was scrapped during the development of ME3.

The original plan for the ending was that the Reapers purpose was to stop Dark Energy destroying the galaxy by eradicating the cause of the build-up - Every space faring/Mass Effect field using species.

Shepard would be faced with two choices instead of two - Sacrifice the human race to save the galaxy by becoming a Reaper (Because humans are special), or destroy the Reapers & hope that the various species would be able to find a way to deal with the Dark Energy themselves.

The "Dark Energy build-up" plot was mentioned three times in ME2, with an entire mission being built around it.

This is called foreshadowing.

Whereas the Catalyst and Leviathan were mentioned none times.

None.

Catalyst was the entire plot of the third game.

The Catalyst comprised 33% of the time we've spent in this series.

Ignoring that the third game's main plot is when the writing took a turn for **** town; space kid was relevent for about the last 5 minutes of that game and that's it. This is evidenced by the fact that if they cut out those last 5 minutes and just played the destroy ending minus Normandy crashing, relays exploding, and Geth/EDI dieing it would have made perfect sense (and been a better game).

Awesome, yet another trivial software patent. When, exactly, did they drop the requirement for actual innovation?

IPO:
Your invention must not be obvious to someone with a good knowledge of the subject.

The idea (putting dialogue options commonly presented in a list or tree on a wheel) is something a designer probably doodled in a break...

Plus, Alpha Protocol features a virtually identical system (wasd instead of a wheel), so surely it should be considered common general knowledge.

Edit to add: And paraphrasing what the character is going to say is obvious since common, realistic conversation tends to be much longer than what you can fit in the space.

IMO, this is pretty awesome. the paraphrase dialogue system is one of the most immersive tools used in video games.

What is awesome about this? Did you get a better mobile from Apple's lawsuits? Or a better computer from the SCO lawsuits?

Honestly that seems like just to say "I did it first" so people can't claim they did. You can't hold copyright over a general concept.

How could paraphrases be patented? Wing Commander 3 had them a decade before ME1.

It's not paraphrases that are being patented.  The substantial thing seems to be placing the responces in a consistent position according to the "class" of the response.  ie Paragon on top, Renegade on bottom, Investigate on the left.
