If you zoom in on the patent, it looks like they patented the actual wheel, and probably what goes on each side. It would be downright hillarious if someone granted a patent for selecting a paraphrase.Sion1138 wrote...

That's what a patent does though, makes people have to pay monetarily to use an intellectual property of another person.
We don't know what exactly they patented. It's probably more involved. It would be downright comedic to take money from people just for using paraphrasing.
I mean, any RPG with a voiced protagonist is going to do that. You don't want to put down exactly what the character will say word for word. It can't be done that way.
What if it's a whole mouthful? You have to summarize and the only way to do that is by paraphrasing.
They couldn't patent just that general concept, could they?

I'm pretty sure Drew intended for Dark energy to make a larger impact and or have larger implications in ME3 (Reaper Motivations). He will obviously side with the ME3 ending to not tarnish what the other Devs came up with. He'd probably receive back lash from the company.
No.
He did not.
Dark Energy was scrapped.
It was mentioned.
Three
Times
In 100 hours of gameplay.
Three.
Times.
Yes.
He really did.
It was scrapped during the development of ME3.
The original plan for the ending was that the Reapers purpose was to stop Dark Energy destroying the galaxy by eradicating the cause of the build-up - Every space faring/Mass Effect field using species.
Shepard would be faced with two choices instead of two - Sacrifice the human race to save the galaxy by becoming a Reaper (Because humans are special), or destroy the Reapers & hope that the various species would be able to find a way to deal with the Dark Energy themselves.
The "Dark Energy build-up" plot was mentioned three times in ME2, with an entire mission being built around it.
This is called foreshadowing.
Exactly. And I would of preferred it as well. I would love to have a morally ambigous decision and would like to see if the civilizations in ME could come up with a cure in time.

Drew was an inventor when the paraphrase dialogue system was made, not when the state gave approval.

Oh, they patented the wheel, really the use of a circle over the more common square text box? So did they patent the entire idea of a very small amount of text space trying to convey a whole conversation?
I'm sure there is more to it, but on the surface it seems a bit silly. Either way, miss ya Drew K, I'm all for ya getting some due to ya.

So essentially what we got except it has jsut as many plot holes as space magic does.
Got it. Grass is greener on the other side.

Have you read the patent? It would have be a radial with exactly six segments. It is very easy to use similar system and not pay royalties.andy69156915 wrote...
Uh... That's bad. It means everyone will have to pay him or Bioware royalties just to use a similar system. That means that just about no one else will do it because they won't want to pay to do so.
In short, he just made sure that no one else uses it. Selfish git.

But shouldn't the patent technically go to Casey? Or did he also get it but not mention it?
I'm not sure, it looks like he's the only name on that certificate.

This post is so true and funny! They forgot to use their own invention in ME3! Hardy Har Har!!IReuven wrote...
Okey... Got a patent... So I guess they should have actually used it in ME3 instead of lowering it to the low, lazy-made level of it just being.

Whereas the Catalyst and Leviathan were mentioned none times.
None.
Times.
Catalyst was the entire plot of the third game.
The Catalyst comprised 33% of the time we've spent in this series.
Actually, the Catalyst was like ~5% tops of the last game.

Casey's name is on the online patent info as well.
Unfortunately, EA is the asignee, which means the system will not likely appear outside of an EA game, even if the bulk of BioWare moves on. It also means EA can do whatever it wants with a feature that Microsoft actually paid to develop. Dialog wheel in the next Medal of Honor, anyone? God I hate EA.

IMO, this is pretty awesome. the paraphrase dialogue system is one of the most immersive tools used in video games.
Oh that is genius!
I always suspected Karpyshyn secretly trolls Bioware but this is the cake!
Long live Drew Karpyshyn and the good parts of Mass Effect!

Why does the patent in the pic say "United States of America"? Bioware is based in Canada. Why is a Canadian company getting a USA patent?

Karpyshyn's in Texas these days. And EA being American maybe it was filed there. Details, details.andy69156915 wrote...

Here's a suggestion, Bioware, one that many ME fans would take seriously. How about you hire Drew K. to write one last DLC as the lead writer, going out with a bang, with P. Weekes and Dombrow? Yeah, I know he's busy, ducking the doctors' Twitters and all. But give it a shot!

He may not openly criticize it but he's smart enough to stay clear. The area's still hot and will be for some time.

You can file your patent in any country you want to enforce it in. Filing at the USPTO is popular because the US is a large market (so the patent is worth more money) and it is a good place to litigate because the courts are open. Canada is not as good place to litigate, because of rules that make it so people who sue for no reason and lose have to pay for both sides' lawyers.
Generally you will file in one country initially and your patent can be filed through multiple countries' patent offices through the WIPO/PCT system. It gets expensive though, so usually you'd check off the USA/EU/Japan (big markets with predictable court systems) and leave it at that.

Well, not arranging them randomly would fall under "obvious" as the alternative would inevitably result in user errors and annoyance (imagine how productive you'd be if all your desktop items were randomly shuffled every time you tried to launch a program). The substantial thing seems to be placing the responces in a consistent position according to the "class" of the response.

Application was filed before EA snatched them up. It's just for enforcement reasons.
No way it's gonna be a good thing it's assigned to EA .
