Meh. I personally enjoy the romance focus; familial relationships are hard to implement, and I consider a lot of the superdeep friendship ideas to be overrated.

There is enough focus on romance xilizhra to keep romantics sated. It's time to branch out and focus on other relationships as well like hobbit pointed out earlier in the thread.

I'm describing how I felt to reflect the type of Pc to character bond I hope to see in game. The character is not the point of this thread, it's that feeling that matters.

For the feeling to exist the option has to be available for your character and an NPC.

To have a shared feeling the option has to be available for player character and NPC or it will not work.

If it's friendship then it needs two people.

The option to become a friend to your companion has been in every game so far. However if you read the op, I'm asking for something a bit deeper than just friends.

just so we're clear, I'm not asking for some headcanon type relationship that only exist in the mind. I'm asking for deeper connected relationships as existant as the romantic relationships in game.

The vid which shows morrigan's dialogue in the op portrays what I'm talking about. Also the friend date scene with femshep shows this.Hobbit of the shire also phrased it beautifully.

Personally, I feel DA2's friendships did this well enough already.

I should be use to all the fawning over Morigan, but it still makes my skin crawl. Look after playing the game and watching my friends play the game (a combined 6 playthroughs) I loath her to no end. Her writing is inconsistent and her personality is grating. Morigan's dialogue outside of camp or if you aren't romancing her are blatant "I'm evil god is fake and you dumb for believing in him" statements every time you turn around. Shocking that a theist would be irritated with a character/person who spouts this nonsense nonstop with nothing other than that to define her.

Now if you try to befriend her she (I swear she's written by a different person) comes off a lot more human, for lack of a better word. Even then she's still a selfish self serving ****.

Aside from the Morigan hate, a couple of things bother me about your statements. Most (not all) of the characters have a great deal of depth to them. And they are far more consistant. At least in DA;O in DA:2 I would say Bethany/Carver, Anders, and the city guard woman (can't remember her name.) were well written. The others I just didn't care about. Even Isabella who I knew they wanted me to care about I never did. Meh. This has gotten incoherent so I'll stop now.

How so? The extent of every friendship was just that in game, headcanons aside.Aveline could've filled that sisterhood role but she constantly goes out of her way to tell hawke to keep out of her business regarding her feelings and even flat out tells carver to stop acting like she's one of the family.

Wait, when does she do that? I remember "It's oddly comforting how you insult me like I'm family," but I don't think that counts. Also, I don't quite get the completely platonic sisterhood thing, but then, I'm lesbian.

We've been through this

The last part of your post is definitely incoherent. Rewrite and I'll answer.

I didn't see anything profound or complex about Morrigan. She just seemed like the token evil companion who constantly complained when you didn't murder people and eat their souls for fun and profit.

what's wrong with that? more scarifices more boons! boons-> profit.

Morrigan is very clever character. She is like Dark Angel of Sin. (Judas Priest Touch of Evil is her song).

Of course it counts as it shows she doesn't think of herself as family.

A strong sisterhood can be just as powerful  as a passionate love affair.

Hmmm. I won't discount you, but... I honestly do feel I got that already with Aveline by the end of the game, and with Isabela to a lesser extent.

This was meant to be in the game, but never made it. It would play if a female Warden romanced Alistair, happening right after the truth on why a grey warden has to kill the arch-demon. I know most people have already read it, but it doesn't hurt to see just how much better DA:O characters are.

Isabela also had potential with her talk of sailing away with hawke, but the bond there only goes as far in-game as "good friends" and "someone to watch her back", which is disappointing given the 10 year period.

Indeed, it shows morrigan's strong love for the female warden as a sister, ready to sacrifice everything for her. I curse the maker that such compelling writing didn't make it in game. Definitely gaider at his best... I need a moment...

Why can't something be "shallow" and still fulfilling?

What a contradiction that is. Shallow by its very nature is superficial and lacks anything tangible emotional or otherwise one might indulge. How can you become fulfilled on a connection that's hardly there?

I thought the relationship one of my Hawkes had with Isabela was quite shallow. F*** buddies is not "deep" in the way you want. But it showed a lot about both of their characters that they could simply be f*** buddies and I valued that part of the game, the peripheral knowledge that although Isabela hasn't got much of a reason to stick around, she still fools around with Hawke on the side for funsies.

O'rly? (4:00-4:50) Seems isabela didn't appreciate your shallow sexcapades as much as you think and wanted something deeper.

All I am championing is good writing, and a character need not have a profoundly deep or meaningful relationship with the PC to be a well written, well-developed character.

No you're championing uninteresting and dull characteristics. eraltgay is also a character with shallow relationships. His friends with benefits relationships with risstay & co are about as deep and amusing as a wet piece of piece of tissue paper.

What the heck is a "shallow steak?"

A steak with no depth. what else could it be? :?

Someday you should just start a thread saying "I don't like this, give me more of what I want, and I will redefine terms to suit my argument and broaden the goalposts until I think I win."

You are switching back and forth between arguing about character's personalities and a character's relationship with the player character as it suits you.

Isabela is a deep character. Regardless of what she wanted out of it, my Hawke's relationship with her was shallow. I found this arrangement was a compelling and interesting part of my Hawke's story. Shallow relationship does not equal shallow character, you are putting words in my mouth and confusing the issue. Judging by the title of this thread, this is a discussion about how you want relationships in the game with more emotional intimacy. We're not talking about personality.

Steak is an inanimate object and cannot be emotionally nuanced and complex. Might want to pick a different metaphor.

Tsk tsk tsk sensing some immaturity there

How so? because I pointed out that isabela wasn't as into the relationship as you were? A relationship is a two way thing you know.

No my dear, you were just ignorant of what your relationship with isabela truly amounted to, which is nothing.

Or you just didn't bother getting to know the character, in which case she most certainly comes off as shallow.

I am saying exactly that.

I am saying exactly that their relationship amounted to nothing. And I thought that was interesting! I have said that about three times now. How hard is that to grasp?

Have fun giving your own interpretation of what you got out of morrigans character, shorts. I however shall depart and return to finish my argument with psuedo under better conditions. *poof*
