Every time I slid off into the ravine I cringed and threw my controller. Those dragon slayer bows pack mega weight...I died 8 times or so just getting popped by them...fully blocking it...and the force pushing me off. Then there is booking it full speed up there to avoid the arrows to begin with. I wore the excellent gold trimmed set mostly, and got it before exiting Blighttown the first time after a quick stop in Demon Ruins, and I could even move quick in them.

I got past them my second try...only to get greedy and go for the item on the other side. A measely bundle of souls...boy was that a mistake. :P

That part was awesome. Brutal but awesome.

Mildred is a set NPC phantom that happens even when you're offline (but human.)There are a few of those. When you play online, random human players like "XXxxBoBaFeTtxxXX" (<--actual invader I encountered tonight) can invade your game and exploit backstabs to murder you in cold blood

...just because I killed one silly covenant leader...

My first playthrough I stuck with the Way of White covenant for a good half of the game and was a good girl. I got invaded a grand total of twice. Once it bumped me back to the title screen because my internet is garbage.

But now since I'm not in the way of white, which lessens invasions (I'm Chaos Servant +2! Woo!...seriously though, look into that. You may want to cheat, as it's easy to make a mistake you didn't even realize you were making)...and I killed a covenant leader, I'm on the list of sinners, and it makes me a target.

Since I've no interest in PvP, i just find it a huge nuisance.

Ha, what covenant is this and when can I join it? Sounds like fun!

I'm with the way of white and never have been invaded. Then again i'm always a zombie. I've invaded once and another invader joined as well, I thought we would work together but instead rammed his pike into my back. I didn't last 5 minutes.

I actually love getting invaded so I can make the person rage quit after I beat them and "praise the sun gesture" their ass, hahaha.

The Darkmoon covenant. You can find it in Anor Lando and i think you need a certain ring that you can find in the catacombs.

After taking Elton John's advice and doing the whole "quit and reload" thing, I got a full-health Solaire for the boss fight. (I also unplugged my internet because I didn't want potential invaders thinking I was quitting to escape them, which is something I don't do. I plugged it back in afterward.)

I threw several fights. Solaire wouldn't leave Ornstein alone. Since Solaire does a lot more damage than me, I wanted him to go after Smough while I distracted Ornstein. The times he did engage Smough, he was obliterated. Smough's the easy one, buddy! Just don't stand under his hammer!

Not once could I get Super Ornstein. I eventually just gave up and went kamikaze on Super Smough, thinking I'd be okay with either outcome.

He just stood there. He just stood like a huge lump while I hacked his legs to bits. I'd never attempted close-range combat with Smough, Stand back and Great Chaos Fireball is my method. I feel more comfortable with giving him a wide berth.

Apparently close up is the place to be.

Someday I'll get Ornstein's soul, dangit. Next playthrough.

Hey... it doesn't say that anymore, does it? Now it says "victory achieved" when you defeat a boss. And "Humanity restored" is now "You revived to human." Huh... "You Died" is certainly still the same, though.

I fought them alone and always got a circular motion going. I went after Ornstein first. After so many deaths I learned their tricks and moves. Ornstein is great at dodging fireballs, and afterwards I realized I should have used Combustion on his ass. Once Ornie is done, I stayed far away from Fatso until he went to pound me with his hammer, then I would roll right and then jab him with the crystal spear dropped from the mimic earlier in the level. I never attacked beside then.

This fight is almost all defense...curse that Smough grind attack he does 4 times in a row sometimes...you know...where he grinds his hammer and bullrushes. Anyone else say "****ing stop that, ****!!!"

Just stand behind one of the broken pillars when he does that. 9 times out of 10 he won't get past and you can use ranged attacks (either magical or physical) to attack him during that time.

I saw the new event with Sif, if you battle him post expansion. Man, it makes the fight even more sad. I hated that battle. Yeah, I didn't buy the expansion. I heard it is all battle and no story. I hope the new direction for Dark Souls: 2 is truthful in that there would be more focus on storyline.

I fought them alone in my first playthrough, as I wasted all my humanities summoning Solaire, who, most of the time, ended up dying in about ten seconds once he crossed the fog. That began my hatred of the guy.

My advice to anyone fighting these guys would be to ALWAYS try to have them both onscreen. I also like circling around the room, although i stick to looping around the two central broken pillars, as sometimes I'll lose count of which pillar I'm at (hey, it's stressful, lol) and end up backing into a wall. The both of them haven't quite grasped the idea that they can't walk through pillars or shoot lightning through them, so a little bit behind a pillar is about the only spot you're 100% safe to chug an estus. Killing Ornstein first is recommended. It' also seems to be easier, as even when you're not paying close attention to Smough - provided you can still see him - I find he's a lot more predictable than Ornstein, so you don't really have to worry about him as much as you would Background Ornstein.

If you're going for the knight's honor achievement (like I was... sigh) and it's your first playthrough, kill Smough first. Super Smough is a pushover, better left for NG+.

I do love that little chuckle of his.

Last night I cleared out the Catacombs and some of the Tomb of the Giants, until I got knocked down a ladder into two giant skeletons with murakumos. Somehow I missed the first bonfire and then got booted back to the Catacombs.

FUN.

I heard that the Marvelous Chester (one of the characters in the new content) is actually romanceable. I have since sold my copy of Dark Souls and am boycotting future From Software products because it seems the new direction for the "Souls" series is to appeal to casual players.

Edit:

Joking aside: You heard wrong. You can't believe every little rumor on the internet. In this instance it sounds like you heard the rumor from one person considering the substantial amount of new story content the expansion adds. One only need to visit the Dark Souls wiki page for the new content to see how much it adds to the story. That or simply visit the numerous videos showing off the new content and discussing the bosses and their history.

The expansion is actually the most story heavy part of the game now and you're missing out on the best boss fights and best story content.

Solaire's dialogue in Anor Londo is the closest to romance Dark Souls should ever get. I'm not averse to romance in games, but Dark Souls isn't really a good fit for it.

I joke about Siegmeyer, but really... ew.

So.... NG+ Four Kings. So far, they're the only boss that's had a noticeable difficulty increase. I'm sure a good chunk of that is due to my less-than-stellar build (I wasted far too many points in faith because last playthrough I wanted to join the Warriors of Sunlight) but it seems like their HP has skyrocketed. I get overwhelmed quick. Looks like I've gotta go up some levels and try to salvage my character.

Upon reaching the Four Kings, I realized I hadn't killed the Moonlight Butterfly yet, so I did so with Witch Beatrice, hoping she'd be more help against the kings.

...after about ten minutes trying to kill a ghost she can't hit, she finally followed me down into the abyss. I honestly don't think she did anything. I didn't hear any of her spells going off, nothing.

...was she still looking for that damn ghost?

The Witch Beatrice is quite an aid against the Moonlight Butterfly (in fact if you just dodge and block its attacks you can let Beatrice kill it and she does so with ease) but she's pretty much useless (in my experience anyway) against the Four Kings. I used her to farm against the Darkwaiths though. Once you release the water from the New Londo just jump down to her summon sign from the tower near the church and then summon her to help you. This route serves as a short-cut too.

I think one of the patches has rendered her useless against ghosts. Her attacks do nothing against them now. I'm sure her attacks used to harm them months ago but I could be wrong.

A Soul's game more focused on direct story can easily obliterate the atmosphere. For those interested in Souls' fascinating lore, I recommend EpicNameBro on YouTube.

The Four Kings are always a tough fight. Why, some may ask...when I have only done one playthrough, would I have said that? Because I've fought them more times then the cute, adorable bosses other games have if a person were to do 3 playthroughs. The Four Kings fight is an up close, grinding win. Massive stamina management along with great statistical attention is needed...combined with timing uses of the estus. Some people use defense sorceries against them since its almost impossible to avoid damage...minimalizing damage is the key. That, making sure to get your damage in and avoid critical attacks before you flasked out and s.o.l.

^Oh, whoops, yeah, I beat them a while back. I just shuffled some equipment around. I don't use sorceries - I have none, my character's intelligence is 9, so I never got anything that Griggs had for sale. In fact, I think he's still locked in a room in the lower undead burg on this playthrough. Oops.

Haven`t been back to the game since, I`ve sunk all of my free time into various Fire Emblems.

Just beat O&S solo at soul level 1. Pretty sure four kings are impossible for me now. They were an EASY boss at normal levelling, I don't get why people have so much trouble with them. But now, wow, just not enough stamina!

The Four Kings are easy to beat if you have a weapon dealing strong damage as this means you take one out before another one comes. They become tricky if you end up having to fight them all at once.

I know but I was replying to your statement of "they were an EASY boss at normal levelling, I don't get why people have so much trouble with them."

I'm never playing through this game without leveling up. Seriously O&S are quite challenging enough...

I've manged the four kings at level ~60 with no vitality, simply by constantly dodging backwards and shooting the occasional arrow at them. Bows kinda suck damage-wise, and even my fully upgraded and fully-scaled (40dex/str) composite bow (with the power within) took forever to kill them all. I'm pretty sure I had all four chasing me at one point. But as long as you dodge backwards enough, you can generally keep out of harms way.

This method could probably work at sl1 although it'll be a lot riskier.

If you were intent on beating them at sl1, i'd recommend a fully upgraded pyromancy flame (roaring dragoncrest+crown of dusk+power within) and chucking a few chaos fireballs at them. You would probably have attunement slot issues, so pyromancy will only get you so far.

Other non-scaling weapons such as fully upgraded lightning/fire/chaos weapons or dragon weapons would also be reasonably effective - although they'll require you to get into close range (and risk getting one-shotted).
I can't remember the consensus on lightning/fire ranged weapons. Lightning crossbows with lightning bolts or fire bows with fire arrows could be a good option for a non-scaling ranged weapon if they deal the damage they're supposed to.

The only other advice I'd give is to summon witch beatrice if possible, since you might be able to use her as a temporary distraction (although she tends to die pretty fast).

Yeh I'm running round with reinforced lightning club +5 and maxxed pyro flame, using power within and great combustion on them. The dodges aren't too hard but they seem to be spamming so much magic for some reason. I might just give it up tbh, I only wanted to do some darkwraith SL1 trolling :(

Might try the crossbow technique for first King so I can get a decent position for the second spawn, endurance runs out quick on first one so can't get to him quick enough, 75% of the time he pops that homing magic

They spam magic because they possess one quarter each of Gwyn's Lord Soul. At least there is a reason for it :P. That area of effect magic blast others have, too, is always a pain.

I'm farily new to Dark Sould, and after getting to know the gameplay (as a tradition, I first make one of each character class-option and play around a bit), I've rung the first bell. Had no clue I had to go back to the sun-worshipper and advance that way, so after first bell went to old londo, cleared out ghosts and wondered what I'd do next.

For some reason or other I tried jumping off the building where's the guy who sells curses. Lost my humanity with that - and next I went back for the 50k+ souls and about 10 humanity, got killed, lost it all. Tried going back there for 5 hours (I'm ill right now so my reflexes aren't best). To no avail - the ghosts keep ganging up on me as I've no place to fight them properly (the bastards hide inside walls and come out unexpected). I'm a bit slow with my Strength and humongous weapon oriented gameplay, yet I'm the stubborn type. All in all I've lost countless souls there and died a countless number of times.

So what's this I hear about a skeleton key? Seems that I've gone back into that hell for no reason at all now.
