Prequel, sequel and alternate timeline.
It must be EVERYTHING.

Sequel.

We already know what happens in the Rachni Wars, Krogan Rebellions, and First Contact War. To keep the series interesting they also have to keep the timeline moving forward.

A prequel setting might work for a four to six hour DLC or a full expansion, but it wouldn't work for an entire game IMO.

Sequel, preferably using the Destroy ending as canon.

Prequels are the worst when they are made so much longer after the original.

This is why I hate the Star Wars prequels...because it's too hard to suspend disbelief when everything looks so better, more crisp and new than what it is supposed to predate.

Your poll is missing an "Inquel" (is that a word? Set during the events of the original) option and an "I don't care/Any" options.

I wouldn't object to a SINGLE game that gave us a prequel, but I want to see more of the galaxy in the wake of ME3's ending(s). I want a new trilogy. Prequels are engaging to find out more immersive specifics in how we reached where we started, and I could see playing a krogan during the Rachni War or a Prothean in the last days of the Prothean empire before the Reapers came, but I couldn't see a full trilogy out of that. I want the long-form storytelling (it's largely what's kept this series so engaging for me; I play on Casual solely because the story matters to me a lot more than how difficult someone is to gun down), and I think a sequel trilogy would be more engaging than a prequel. You know how a prequel ends, without question: Anakin Skywalker becomes Darth Vader, Lucian goes on to lead the Lycans against the vampires, Harry & Lloyd go on to become Dumb & Dumber, etc.

You don't know how a new sequel ends til you're at the ending; that sense of discovery in the story is what I want.

It has to be a prequel because a sequel I would of thought would be impossible to because of the awful endings of Mass Effect 3 unless Shepard is rewritten and we know that will not happen so it has to be a prequel to Shepard and NOT a sequel to Shepard

Having to choose between the 2 I'd rather have a sequel.

But ultimately I would prefer a brand new trilogy, that remains in the ME universe, eventually in a new galaxy (not sure about this but that's a possibility), which would have no reference to the conflicts, story plots and characters from the previous games, and therefore no save import.

Sequel, please... Even if it means canonizing an ending...

They say its already in development, I would think they must know at this point if it will be a prequel or sequel...

If it's going to be ME4 it has to be a sequel, the only way a prequel would be acceptable is if it were a spinoff game on a smaller budget and release it as a PS Vita, 3DS, iOS/Android game

And will people please STFU about canonizing the ME3 ending, Bioware knew there would be another Mass Effect game just not with Shepard, if they were aware of that they'd know how to work with all 3 endings and hey that gives us at least 3 replays of ME4, stop selling Bioware short they made 8 different storylines in the Old Republic I'm more than sure they can handle 3

Prequel. I think there's a danger that you change too many things in ME3 to make a sequel out of them. Mass Effect 3 was the kind of story that can only be told at the end of a trilogy. Big, booming decisions that resonate across the universe, huge contradictory strands too diverse to combine into a coherent narrative. I'd rather feel like my decisions continued to have repercussions and that each timeline was marked by the decisions its Shepard made, than feel like any decisions they made would iron out within 200 years to "Oh, we rebuilt the geth," "Oh, some of the quarians survived," "Oh, we ended up curing the genophage anyway fifty years later and also Wreav died of natural causes."

The further forward you go, though, the less of a problem this becomes. Move forward 500 years and it'd be easier to swallow. There's probably even a sweetspot, somewhere far enough forward that it'll make sense that it's forged enough of its own new history to string a new story out of, but close enough that you'll still feel like Shepard made a difference. Hey, who knows, maybe Wrex and Liara might still be alive!

Personally? I'd circumvent that mess altogether, so I've voted prequel. Prequel makes more sense to me - plenty of stories to be told in the galaxy's past. "Pre-humanity" sounds... exciting. But! It's not my story to tell. As long as it's a new Mass Effect game, I'll be happy.

Anything called "mass effect 4" should not be a prequel, ever.

Nothing with a numerical marker indicating when it takes place should ever be a prequel ever, that just makes for confusing narative coherance.

Now if it was Mass Effect: [insert historical event/vauge word here], than maybe.

While I agree, I don't think anyone's said it is going to be called Mass Effect 4.

It's the fourth Mass Effect game, so that's what we've been calling it, but it's not been announced as a title, has it? Dragon Age 3 was only called Inquisition within the last couple of months.

Here's an idea:

Make it so you do the last mission of the game twice.  The very first will be the same as the last, the only difference is the graphics should be much nicer the first time you do said mission. When you do it again at the end of the game, the graphics quality should be worse. Maybe the same as the first KOTOR.

I mean, if we're going to do a prequel, why not just recycle it all the way? No need for anything new.

I think it would be kind of cool for it to start around the same reaper invasion if the story is vastly different and doesn't focus on the Reapers. I'm not sure if they could make an interesting enough game like this though.
