I don't quite understand why everyone's saying that a prequel would be pointless since 'we already know how it ends'. Yes, we know vaguely what happened (the Turians kicked the Krogan's faces in, the Rachni were destroyed, etc)  but we don't know how these things happened for the most part.

Besides, such large-scale conflicts are an ideal place for crafting a tale of a hitherto unknown warrior (that's also a blank slate) that carved their name into the stars through their heroism and bravery. I suppose you coud compare it to a WWII game. You know how the war ends, but seeing it all through the eyes of someone who fought in it really gives the whole thing a much more personal feel, as well as giving you a sense of scale.

Hell, Halo: Reach's opening shot was of your character's helmet lying on a hellish, burnt landscape with a bullet hole through the visor, so you knew exactly how that was going to pan out, but that was still fun.

Make mass effect 4 a sequel. In My opinion, it would be pointless to make ME4 a prequel. The series doesn't have to end after ME3. Sure the reaper threat is gone, But that doesn't mean that all the races of the ME universe are going to hold hands and sing cumbaya forever, and no problem ever arises again.... And the reapers don't make Mass Effect, Mass Effect. It's the rich worlds, the races and the cultures. The dialog choices, the great story.

And since Shepard won't be in ME 4, it will probaly have a somewhat new focus. It doesn't have to be reapers, all the odds and Doom and gloom. That worked in Shepard's story, ME, ME 2 and ME 3. But just because the trilogy ends the way it does, doesn't mean there can't be new stories after those events. I would be great to be able to see the legacy, the inplact on the galaxy, after Shepard's choices. Even if ME 4 takes place 100 years after ME3. You could have references of previous events and the characters. Hell maybe Liara makes a cameo, since the Asari reach 1000. And she tells the new group about the battlefield, Shepard and the rebuilding after the reaper war.

And also, the galaxy is a Big place, many of the mass relays may be unexplored, many new planets.
Im no writer, but my point is that they could make new stories after ME3, a new situation, and it would feel good. And not like a stretch. The past of mass effect is so well documented, in the games logbook, novels and books. It feels like you know what you need to know about the history of the ME universe. I think people want to know what happens next in the timeline.
Trough different eyes. Prequels are alomst never good, and it wouldn't feel the same.
But i guess well see. But i strongly hope That mass effect 4 is a sequel.

I'd prefer a prequel. In my opinion if a sequel were made right now it would be very sub-par because the writers need some time to think up new characters, situations, conflicts in order to make a good sequel, otherwise the sequel might end up being a re-hash of the first Mass Effect and I personally would not like it if that happened.

Now if a prequel is made and used to develop some characters we know (i.e. David Anderson during the First Contact War, The Illusive Man before we meet him in ME2, Saren and his relationship with his brother, Nihlus, Samara, etc.) that would give the writers the opportunity to give more info on a lot of the characters before they met Commander Shepard and it would also give them the time to think of new ideas for a possible sequel. I wouldn't mind if the next game was made in a sort of episodic style. Instead of having a single epic Campaign we could have some smaller more personal Campaigns for a number of characters that were used to expand upon them and their motivations for the way they are when we see them in the Mass Effect games.

You played Halo Reach for the story?

Ha!

That is a FPS game, different story. With that situation of a game, you can makea  prequel or sequel. However, ME left on the wrong foot, people want a sequel so they can see what happened. ME isn't going good for a prequel.

And I don't remember Reach's story to be "fun." Spent more time in firefight and forge. Halo is more for the gameplay, less for the story. Although people still like the story, it really isn't a core part of Halo (Some may argue, but I say this, it isn't.) A better example based on the same gameplay and theme might be good though.

Sequel, if people really want to see their beloved characters again why on earth would you ask for a prequal?
Humanity has only been in the galactic community for about what  35 years, maybe less? The game cannot stand on a non human involvement so that pretty much leaves the Rachni Wars and Krogan Rebellion out of the picture, and the First Contact War is hardly big from the sound of it to support a entire game or even a series.

"referred to as the Relay 314 Incident by the turians, was a small, three-month conflict between the Systems Alliance and the Turian Hierarchy."

It's Sequel or nothing.

Prequel. If it's a sequel, we should be able to import our ME3 saves. Otherwise, there's no point in a sequel if Shepard's decisions aren't reflected and the first trilogy is completely ruined.

Sequel, and a 100+ years in the future - no Shepard, no ME1-3 squadmate cameos (other than Liara and Grunt, I suppose). I love Shepard and the gang as much as anyone, but I'm perfectly happy for Shep's story to be over. I don't really see the point in a prequel - I'd be much more interested in seeing what happened to the galaxy post-Reapers, even if/when an ending is canonized.

Krogan Rebellion. I think that setting is perfect for a prequel since most races (but humans) have made their way to the Citadel already. We would get to see those quarians without suits and know their way of life before the Morning War. We could see the uplift of the turians (and maybe the first turian spectre) get to know Palaven. We could know more about Thessia and the asari, the batarians and their hidden projects, etc. And of course, we would see the krogan army at their full potential.

In other words, we would learn more about this fantastic universe with a prequel. Bioware is good for creating interesting characters, and I think that setting in the timeline is just perfect, to show us that they can create an exciting game with awesome characters which aren't human.

Name a successful all alien game in which no human involvement is ever shown.

Sequel a few decades after ME 3 takes place. Let's the galaxy recover from the reaper war while still carrying some of the scars from it.

Every Star Fox game for example, and to be honest, I think Lilat Wars is one of the best games released for the n64.

In any case, I think bioware could deliver that quite fine. Besides, asari and quarian look very human to me. Do we really desperately need humans and force the next game/saga to be a sequel?

Sequel. Definitely a sequel. I want to see a new protagonist, and what conflicts might exist AFTER the Reaper threat is dealt with.

Prequel combined with inquel in next volumes.

I would situate it in era of escalation of batarian cold war, were some secret alliance of powerful aliens (batarians, First Contact war turian veteran...) wanted to stop too fast advance of humanity. It would be more investigation and espionage then original trilogy and should include missions on Mindoir and Torfan + certain rescue operation on Akuze, so Shepard from our saves would appear in nice cameos here.

In later midquels some other Shepard's decisions would shape world of our new hero - fate of Destiny Ascencion, choice of human Councilor and so on.

Whole story ark would end before or during Reaper invasion, but definitely before final end of ME3, so some decisions should influnce new series. Wouldn't be nice to have salarian and krogan in crew and watched how they are reacting on genophage situation in ME3?

Sequel, we already know all stuff before first ME game, so there is no point to play prequel, maybe some people want, but its not so much interesting to keep up our interest during whole game, prequel is good for DLC, for people who really want, play as Anderson ect.but for me, i'm not interesting in prequel, because i already know how game end.

Sequel is the only way to keep up my interest
