Oh right, good point. Guitar Hero is very high on the list.
I used to think it was silly. Then I got to try it myself and I just couldn't stop. Really addictive game, but in a less destructive way than an MMO at least.

Ikr, before I played it I was like; who buys that stuff, if you really want to play guitar, get a real one.
That turned out well >.< But yeah, I also suppose it's cheaper than MMOs anyway

Not all MMOs are subscription-based though.

I'd have to go with the Disgaea series. It literally goes on forever.
The 'X' series of games (Starting with X:Beyond the Frontier) would be a close second for addictive consumer of obscene amounts of my time.

That was a lot of fun; I eventually had to make myself stop playing, because it was getting ridiculous. I played Disgaea 3.Cutlass Jack wrote...

I'd also add Gladius and Persona 3 and 4 to my previous list of Skyrim and XCOM. And Culdcept Saga - silly game, but totally addictive.
It's really hard to narrow it down to just one game; I keep thinking of more!

Yeah, Disgaea is pretty sweet.
Disgaea 1 is best in terms of a balanced damage system (making it my personal favorite), and Disgaea 3 is best for character/item customizability. Disgaea 2 is a happy medium between the two, offering better customization than Disgaea 1 and a more balanced damage system than Disgaea 3. Haven't played 4 yet. I'll get to it after I'm finished with AC3. Thougt that's not gonna happen anytime soon what with school and work 'n stuffz.
Disgaea 1 (for PSP and DS, anyway) also has multiplayer going for it.

Viva Piñata. No joke. That game is crack......I have no fond memories of being addicted to Viva Piñata though :/ ......just one more piñata aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh

Strategy games.
This year it was Rome Total War and XCOM.
Next Year It'll probably be Empire or Napolean:TW and XCOM.

Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion, Grand Theft Auto 3, Dragon Age Origins, Formula 1 97, Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, Little Big Adventure 2, WWF Smackdown 2: Know Your Role (Don't judge me lol).
Those are the ones I got seriously addicted to in my life.

I spent more time playing Warcraft 3 custom games than any other game during my teen years. Dark Deeds anyone?

In the last few months it's the rebooted King's Bounty series, E.Y.E - Divine Cybermancy, Recettear. Oh, and I've been hooken on this little game called Defender's Quest for a couple of days now.

Interesting question. The ones I remember staying up waaaaaaaayyyyy to late playing are:
Baldur's Gate series
Icewind Dale series
Dragon Age:Origins
Skyrim
Neverwinter Nights
Eschalon series
I'm going to toss Spec Ops:The Line here, even though it's so short it really didn't have the chance to keep me 'addicted' in the sense I stayed up night after night to finish it. But, if it were a longer game, that would certainly have been the case.
Currently I'm having a blast with Kingdoms of Amalur, and it's also keeping me up far too late.

How is World of Warcraft addictive? The first levels are always boring, I played World of Warcraft for 1 year, and it only got addictive once you hit maximum level (80 in my case).
