Good question. I haven't tried scope since I find it tends to narrow your view a bunch. For myself I went with SMG Recoil. It helps a lot to keep the SMG balanced. (Also, I now use armor piercing mod on all weapons)

SMG scope doesn't help much unless you 1) are using the M-12 Locust or other relatively accurate light recoil SMG or 2) have the SMG recoil equipped on the heavy recoil SMGs. (ie: the N7 Hurricane or the M-9 Tempest) And as Robbiesan stated, it just narrows your perspective on your surroundings.

My Turian sentinel likes his scoped Tempest. But without something cutting down the recoil it's more of a hassle than help.

Personally see no point to it. SMGs are typically for close quarter battles with multiple enemies. It seems like the scope literally takes away the one thing the SMG is good at.

Why don't you try it out for yourself.

This since opinions were asked for. SMGs by design are close quarter weapons.

The SMG is a CQC weapon. The scope might work on the Locust because of it's low recoil and high accuracy design. However you are better off placing a stablity mod on the rest due to high recoil.

For what its worth the scope WILL tighten the spread of the bullets, and in combination with something like Marksman most every SMG becomes a bullet laser beam. However, as others have said the recoil only becomes that much more pronounced when using a scope.
Honestly, the best mods are still the normal damage barrel, the AP barrel, the heat sink (for you only not squadmates), ULM, and the stability damper. I personally never use the Stability Damper because I feel as if you can control recoil, but you cant add more bullets to your magazine or increase damage on your own (in otherwords I always use Heatsink/ULM+Barrel)

Depends on what your other weapon is. My Vanguard is currently using a scoped tempest to compliment his shotgun.

A pistol would have better synergy with a shotgun. Pistols are medium to long range and have pin point accuracy rather than SMGs which are designed for mid to close range. Use the pistol for far away targets when charging isn't so wise, like vs a turret.

I use the SMGs for shielded opponents too big to charge or melee, such as Atlases and banshees. Although as mentioned previously, the locust is very accurate at long ranges.
