...... My 2nd point was ;if you truly wanted the correct spelling you should go to the ORIGINAL word and all others after that are acceptable adaptations. ....

I think what is triggering the response to your first comment, is the way you put it (or at least the way I understand what you say) is that there is somehow one only one "true" or "legitimate" spelling which is GREY, and that GRAY is just a second class acceptable variation.
While I (and I guess Baalzie too) think that GRAY is as a valuable word as GREY, or say otherwise that it's not because GREY predated GRAY that one is more correct than the other.

Did not you mean "grey matter"?  (just kidding :P )

No offense for me, not taking this thing seriously at all, just chatting about it just for the fun... of well. chatting Posted Image

Lets think. They arent fully part of human squabbles or fully monsters and so they are kind of in a grey area.

As for how to spell when you invent a language, you can decide how to spell words.

@elys thanks for the response and I do spell the word GRAY always have being american. Had no intention of making it seem second class just making the point that so many words are accepted that once were considered misspelled. And that the words Grey Wardens is the correct name for them because that is what they are called in game. The point of difference being that they both are spelled correctly for there particular language but the correct spelling for the game is as the designers intended. Best example language wise I can come up with is Gray=Color and Grey=Colour. Kind of like use of the term irregardless which so many people use and the actual word should be regardless.........and recently I believe it was finally added as a word only because so many people have misused it for so long. Kinda like the rouge rogue thing oh well at least I am glad I got that clarified or hope I have. Again thanks elys for the response.

They used to be called Black Wardens, but then people started saying they were like goths all depressed and unhealthy (must have something to do with the taint thing), plus the name scared children and kitties.

I read that in the codex somewhere, i swear!

Thanks I guess Posted Image

But let's go back on the Why are they called Grey Warden Posted Image?

Maybe after the ritual they can only see in Black & White because of the taint ? Posted Image

Or maybe just because they're half-darkspawn, they're just half-black-tainted Posted Image

Grey morality, sacrifice for greater good and all that. Clearly trying to make a statement, as White Wardens would have given a better image of world-saving heroism as well as bonus points for alliteration.

im gonna go with a different meaning of grey here and say they call themselves grey because as soon as they take upon themselves the taint their lifespan is significantly shortened, practically instantly making themselves "of middle age and above"

What do Warden's do? Watch over

What do Grey Wardens do? Watch every episode of Grey's Anatomy.

Works for me

LOL @ Grey's Anatomy xD

But as previously mentioned, I guess the name's an allusion to how the Wardens actively take part in grey areas. In a way, the influence of a Grey Warden helps to make or break decisions.

The Grey Wardens because they do what they must to defeat the Darkspawn. There is no black and white in their world, only grey.

The grey wardens are neutral, they should not take any sides only the side against the blight. Thus they are Wardens who are a neutral gray.

I wonder where the "Gray" part came from??
All I can relate is (Nathaniel Hawthorne's) Gray Champion, who stood against the oppression. But then the hero in that story was a gray old man :)
I can't see anything "gray" about the wardens in the game, that is.
Any thoughts??

The same reason Jedi are called Jedi, and Sith are called Sith, and Google is called Google.. you get the point. :P

Personally I think it sounds the part. Grey, meaning ambiguous, which relates to how the Wardens do whatever is necessary to stop the Blight, and Wardens because they're.. Wardens.

Grey Warden possibly may have deeper significance.

But, it could also be a couple of words that "sounded good" together -- kind of like "Scarlet Brigade".

Yeah, that's probably closer to the truth. And it really DOES sound cool. :)

Dunno if anyone mentioned it.. but I thought it was pretty clear... the gray wardens exist to watch for and defeat the darkspawn, at any cost, by any means. They operate in the gray-areas of morality... they are not necessarily noble, honorable guardians... they care only about defeating the darkspawn... even if it means kicking a few kittens in the head.

Yeah, I get that, which is why I suggested that the Grey refers to the Wardens being ambiguous in what they do, doing anything necessary to defeat the darkspawn.

I thought the "Gray" meant neutral. I was under the impression that, while they do fight the dark spawn whereever they are found, they don't takes sides in political agendas unless it impedes on fighting the darkspawn (that was how I saw it anyways). Or it might just be that "Gray Wardens" sounds alot better than "Fuschia Wardens".

Because "not every hero is pure."

Few things are black & white in Ferelden.

Get it?
