Not the whole game but it kind of depends. I think every mission, including all the sidequests, you start and complete with the same two team mates counts towards the ally achievements. So if you begin a short sidequest on the Citadel with teammates A and B and then swap to teammates C and D before going back and seeing whoever you need to see to complete it then you don't get anything toward the ally achievement for any of those teammates. But if you starred with A and B and then changed to B & C you'd be one mission closer to the ally achievement for B. When you think about how many sidequests like that there are on the Citadel and on one a couple of the plot worlds you can use it to your advantage by making sure you take along the teammates whose ally achievements are a higher priority for you.ImTheOx wrote...
So i need to run around with the same 2 mates for the whole playtrough? That sucks
Personally I found the only one that was difficult to get was Liara. Actually difficult is the wrong word, but her's was the last for me by a very long way - like 4th playthrough. I think there are about 80 or 90 missions and assignments in the game so with only two squadmates at a time and some unavailable for early assingments I'd say you probably need three playthroughs anyway. Maybe it can be just barely done in two but if it's possible I reckon it must be fairly tight. I didn't realise all this at the time but what makes it harder with Liara is that for some reason she and Garrus both need 50 missions/assignments while everyone else only needs 45. This isn't a big deal for Garrus as he's acquired very early, but Liara can be acquried anytime between leaving the Citadel and going to Ilos which means maybe not until the closing stages of the game (her dialogue on Therum is fairly funny if you leave it late enough). So despite taking her and Tali with me nearly everywhere in my first run to compliment my Soldier Shep I didn't get Liara's ally achievement and I did get Tali's because of all the short Citadel assignments I'd done before ever meeting Liara.

And towards the concerns about running the same 2 characters for most of the game. It is not that bad. Chances are, you'll have to run the game multiple times if you intend to get the Hardcore/Insanity achievements anyways. Not to mention if you have designs for more than one Shep, I run 3 myself. Cycling through your teammates after each achievement proc and knocking out the Hardcore/Insanity playthroughs and you'll get the Ally achievements without even realizing it.

You should only do those required to advance the story until you acquire her. Garrus and Liara both require 50 missions for their achievements, so it's best to leave as many as possible given how late she is acquired.
If I do another run using an existing shep would that unlock the medal if done the way you said?

Should do. It's supposed to happen all in any single playthrough so using an existing Shep in an NG+ will count. Just do as The Grey Ranger suggests and avoid all those little sidequests on the Citadel and elsewhere by not talking to anyone or doing anything or going anywhere that doesn't relate directly to the main plot. No planet hopping or exploring the Citadel in depth until you've got her.MICcheck1990 wrote...

Arguably you should go straight to Therum after becoming a Spectre and acquiring the Normandy. Normally the obvious downside of course is that Therum has a couple of tough fights to get Liara on board and you've had to pass up a lot of sidequests that'd normally give you some valuable XP and levels, but if you're using a Shep you've played before he or she should be fairly high level already and able to get through those. And then you can return to the Citadel, put Liara in your squad and run around doing all those Asari Consort, Dead Marine's Body, Helping Doctors, Preaching Hanar etc assignments, which will help get you to the Liara achievement a lot more easily.

General Advice
Completed assignments do not count over multiple playthroughs for the Ally Achievements.
Remember to keep the character that you want to receive the Ally Achievement for in your party at all times after acquiring them. However, owing to the Ally Achievements being obtained based on the number of completed missions/assignments, and the fact that you do not need to complete 100% of missions/assignments to obtain the Ally Achievements, you do have leeway to bring characters along for their personal quest.
For example, you can complete all quests on Noveria before facing Matriarch Benezia (at both the landing site and Peak 15) with the two allies you are obtaining the Ally Achievements. Once you do, you can hike back to the ship to obtain Liara (to see the extra dialogue between her and Benezia). The same goes for Wrex and Garrus: since it is only three missions/assignments, this is not going to noticeably affect the Ally Achievements. This is convenient, as you can obtain the Ally Achievements and do the personal quests with a particular ally in one playthrough, no matter which two of the six allies you bring.
The Ally Achievements are slightly more difficult the longer it takes for you to receive the character. Thus the difficulty in increasing order is:
Ashley Williams / Kaidan Alenko → Garrus Vakarian / Urdnot Wrex → Tali'Zorah nar Rayya → Liara T'Soni
While on ship, remember to speak to Garrus Vakarian, Urdnot Wrex, and Tali'Zorah nar Rayya, as all of these give an assignment that can be completed.
It is advisable to use a pre-existing character of levels 30+ if attempting this process on a difficulty of Hardcore or higher.
Progress Checklist Edit
Complete Eden Prime.
Head to the Citadel, making sure to avoid completing any assignments. (Obtaining them is okay.)
Talk to the Citadel Council in the Citadel Tower.
Find Harkin at Chora's Den.
Find Garrus Vakarian at the Med Clinic.
Speak to Urdnot Wrex at C-Sec.
Go back to Chora's Den and take care of Fist. Leave Fist's OSD alone until after you've rescued Liara T'Soni.
Go to the alleyway and rescue Tali'Zorah nar Rayya.
Go back to the Citadel Council and receive your status as a Spectre.
Leave the Citadel.
Go to the Knossos system in the Artemis Tau cluster and rescue Liara T'Soni from the planet Therum.
Return to the Citadel and complete all the assignments which can be found there.
Visit each and every non-mission system and do all of the assignments that are available. Note that collection assignments (such as UNC: Valuable Minerals) are not necessary for the Ally Achievements.
Complete the crew member assignments.
Complete Bring Down the Sky (optional). The assignments there also count toward the achievement.
Complete Pinnacle Station (optional). The assignments there also count toward the achievement.
Complete Noveria. Be sure to complete all assignments at the landing site before leaving in the Mako.
Complete new assignments that had the Noveria requirement.
Complete Feros. Be sure to complete all assignments at the landing site before leaving in the Mako.

Planning a run through all three Mass Effect games again. While I'm at it, I thought I'd also make sure I've got all the achievements.
Looking at the ally achievements in Mass Effect, I cannot tell if I've got them already or not. The symbols are not as colorful as all the other symbols, so maybe they are still on my "to do" list. I don't see that Mass Effect says anywhere that I've got 49/49 achievements.
The symbols for the ally achievements look like the ones on the wiki page.
So have I got the ally achievements or not?

I guess they are unlocked. You should be able to check by hovering your cursor (or whatever) over the symbols. If the bonus (which is granted for that achievement) is stated, they are unlocked. (Not unlocked achievements don't show the bonus)

Thanks, they show the bonus, so I'm good to go with the first game.
