I feel like there is no other option to take other than to "harden" Alistair's personality in DA:O. In the epilogue slides it states that he is a much better king in all outcomes than if he remains unhardened. For example in Dragon Age: The Stolen Throne a similar event happens when Loghain "hardens" Maric (killing Katriel) and Ferelden is better for it as he is a much better king in the long run. I wonder if a "hardened" or "un-hardened" Alistair plays a role in DA3

It's been four years but I still giggle at the use of the word "harden."

That's assuming that he's king at all and not a corpse or a broken drunken loser whining about his lost throne. I expect if the Almight Gaider decides that the ruler of Fereldan plays a role, then whoever the ruler was in any given import (or based on whatever the alternatives to save imports allow us to choose) will determine whether or not Alistair will play a role.

There's also the issue of whether hardened or unhardened Alistair is a flag that will be recognized when importing or whether a bug will render it irrelevant.

I harden him everytime we get back to camp... What?

My warden would prefer to rule behind the scene by making him stay the same and become the mastermind behind everything.  I do hope it plays a role in the next game.

He is dead in 2 out of 3 of my playtrhoughs. And in that one, where he lives he isn't hardened.

Ferelden doesn't suffer under an unhardened Alistair and Alistair himself gets to remain the fun loving guy he always was. Anyone who hardens him is just cruel.

I usually harden him if I intend on putting him on the throne for that reason. But also because I hope that a hardened Alistair will stand up to Eamon's manipulation. He seems slimy to me.
I don't usually bother if he's a Grey Warden though. Seems a bit harsh if you do, especially since he wants to be King more (or at least doesn't want Anora to rule).

It's our duty?
Keep in mind that, while things might not seem too happy, it can also make for a more interesting story if we DON'T harden Alistair. Sometimes, people don't just want "happily ever after" plots. Not that I'm saying that either way of doing things is better, but... let people make their own choices, y'know?

I have a tough time being mean to Alistair because he's just so freaking likable. All of my favorite Dragon Age characters crack wise in inappropriate situations.

I usually just turned him into a bitter drunk instead.  Or married him to Anora.  Or married him to the Warden.

Don't see the need since I always put Anora on the throne and keep Loghain alive which turns Allistair in Ser Drunk-a-lot.

I really don't like the option. The "everyone is out for themselves" line isn't something that you would expect to make people more responsible, but something that makes people egoistical cynics. There are several other options which can result in a "hard" person ruling the country. Alistair with a Cousland queen, Alistair with Anora, Anora alone, Alistair with a warden chancellor.
But to be honest, I've never been all that fond of Dragon Age's "Only jerks make good kings" stance. Loghain goading Maric into killing Katriel for example. Killing people in blind rage isn't very kingly or just. And I don't see how emotionally wrecking him was supposed to make him a better king.

Hehe, oh harden. Still so very hilarious.
There're benefits to making him more ruthless and such but myself don't need to do that. My Warden put Anora on the throne and Alistair continue to fight in the Grey Wardens together with my Warden.
