Official-official, unfortunately. BioWare has been pretty tight-lipped concerning info about Inquisition, but the human protagonist is one nugget of info they've thrown us. That's pretty much why I started this forum.

I 100% support this.

Humans in Thedas are extremely boring. Maybe slightly pointy ears for elfs and slight shorter or a little chubbier for dwarfs?

Sadly, based on what they've said so far, what you're suggesting is unlikely, but it would be cool if they included that kind of feature :). I support it!

Here is a forum, started by Allan Schumacher, an employee of BioWare, on the subject.

Are you sure that link is right? All I get is some dvdactive 'exlusivity claim', presumably intending 'hot-linking baaad'.

Perhaps but what exactly makes elves or dwarves any less boring? Is it really the race that makes a character interesting?

I love how amazingly coincidental things happen.

I literally just finished reading The Calling not more then 15 minutes ago before coming here and reading the OP in this thread and seeing mention of Alistar's elfiness (I never heard any mention of it before at all).  =)

On topic though, I would deffenitly like to have a half-elf origin.  If Alistar can be half-elf and not look like one at all then so can my character, right?

Please Bioware, Gaider, whoever I need to beg.  Compromise with meh.

A while ago Allan Schumacher told me, in a reply to a post of mine, that there will be at least one quest in DA3 which specifically relates to the PC being human. I think it's likely that this human-specific content would also exclude half-elfs and half-dwarfs from being playable. Another thing he mentioned was that there will be human-specific dialogue which wouldn't make sense if spoken to members of other races (nor, presumably, if spoken to half-breeds.)

Scroll down to the 7th post of this page for the source.

but a half breed character would always be a Human...just with a deeper knowledge of the Elf and Dwarf culture/problematics/religions.
A "just Human" character could care less, in my opinion, about the other races of DA. A half Breed, would always be a Human, but with a virtually bigger (or smaller) point of view on the world around him/her.

I don't see any reason they wouldn't let you be a human/human half-breed.

It's not that they're not letting anyone play as other races, as if they put down a shiny new toys in front of you and then only left you with one. The DA3 protagonist is going to be human because it's in interest for what they would like to do with DA3.  I wish people would stop treating the lack of racial options as something that's being taken away maliciously.

I must have missed something. Alistair's half-elven?

It's a theory based on the books.  Maric had a kid with an elf.

Sounds like a filmsy theory.

Actually, it's implied very strongly. The fact that the elf in question was a Grey Warden who was immune to the Taint and went on to become the Grand Enchanter who is currently leading the revolt against the Chantry makes it kind of a big deal.

Wut? Wasn't Alistair's mother a human maid?

Let's be honest here, the whole 'it has to be human' thing is most likely bunk, especially given they threw out the same excuse for DA2 where Hawke's personal content was of little or no relevance to the actual over arching plot. Bioware is cutting out race choices, not 'for the story' but because it takes effort, it has a cost and they think it's one of the easier things to get away with cutting.

Race choices were in DAO, that established a certain expectation, they weren't in DA2 and aren't going to be in DA3, so it's pretty normal for people to feel like it's being taken away from them. Especially since sequels generally expand on content not remove it.

I don't think they're doing it for malicious reasons, they're just cost-cutting and homed in on this as one of the easiest things to drop.

Or as already stated, it has nothing to do with cutting costs and everything to do with the story they wish to tell.

Race choices were in DAO because they wished to tell a different story. Not having race choices in DA2 or 3 is not taking something away.  It's simply telling a different story.

You *say* and maybe even *believe* Hawke's personal content was of little or no relevance, but if he/she hadn't been human, the story would have played out 100% differently.   There is absolutely no disputing that.  Also, Dragon Age 2 was not Dragon Age: Origins 2.

Dragon Age: Origins did have origins, yes.  But I don't think it was ever stated that it was somehow going to be the series standard.    There is an overarching story going on in Thedas, and sometimes, whether or not you can play as an elf or dwarf or whatever is not relevant whatsoever to that parts of that story.

This is a bold-faced lie.

Hawke's personal content was the over-arching plot.

I still don't get the people who hate so much people who like something different from the only Human character.

It was already said that races where taken away again because of cinematic problem with the races.

So the "we need Human character to tell the story" is quite an excuse. We have see that in DA2. Is just more simple and less expensive.
The story can be written differently, if really is such a problem to have a different character.

still, to stay in topic, the background with a parent of a different race, would be the perfect compromise. The character stay Human (for the happiness of the cinematics) and players who love the Elfs or Dwarfs lore che have it, in at least a little part.
