Hi all -

This is my first post on the DAO boards and though I have read through many of the tech issue topics, I don't think I've seen any answer or fix to my specific issue yet unfortunately.  My system specs are as follows: i) Intel Core 2 Duo @ 3.0Ghz; ii) 4GB DDR2 1066 Corsair Dominator RAM; iii) GeForce 9600GT 512MB RAM; iv) Gigabyte GA-EP45 UD3R P45 Motherboard; and v) 23" Acer Widescreen LCD Monitor.  The system runs most games at the middle to high end of graphic settings with no real issues, including DAO, however after patching to 1.02a I have been experiencing blue screens crashes with hardware failure every 5-10 minutes of gameplay.  My in-game settings are as follows: i) 1920x1080 (my monitor's native resolution); ii) Medium graphic and texture detail; iii) 2x AA and Vsync; and iv) Full screen mode.  I should note that I have never experienced this issue with any game other than DAO.

After reading other posts with the same issue I tried uninstalling the game and reinstalling without updating to the new patch.  However, after 3 more blue screen crashes I cannot think of anything else to do.  I am not that far into the game - having just finished the majority of the Redcliffe quests after getting there straight from Lothering.  So at it stands currently, I am unable to play the game at all because I am unwilling to either damage my system (I am not incredibly tech savvy and cannot track my CPU usage, heat levels, etc., but I imagine having the system crash due to hardware failure multiple times cannot be a good thing), or have to save and restart every 5-10 minutes.

The situation is really a shame because I like the game quite a bit - it is my first Bioware game and aside from the crashing issue it has been very fun and entertaining.  If anyone has any thoughts or recommendations I would really appreciate it - I am at a loss for what to do and as I said earlier will likely not play the game anymore until some semblance of a fix comes out as I am afraid of damaging my system.

Thanks,

I forgot to add that I am running Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate and all of my drivers are completely up to date.

Thanks,

Hi, Try viewing your event viewer logs to see if you can isolate the issue. Go to your start - run and type 'eventvwr' in the box (without the single quotes). View your application/system/dragon age logs. Most of you details will be in the application log. What nvidia driver are you using for your graphics card?

My driver version is 8.17.11.9562 from 11/20/2009.

I checked the event viewer and all it shows under "Windows Logs >> Applications" is an event at the time of the crash labeled "Windows Error Reporting". Event name is "BlueScreen" and there are no problem signatures or details that make any sense to me. What exactly am I looking for? Also, I do not see any Dragon Age logs - should I?

Hi, not sure about the dragon age logs, I only suggested looking because they installed on my pc. Do you see any Stop codes in your application log? Did you double click the event to get the details? Also, when you got a Blue Screen, did you write down the Stop Code? Did you have a chance to read it? You could always try an older nvidia driver with that card. I use the 185.85 driver and I've had really good luck with it.

I didn't see any stop codes in the log and the detail screen didn't really point to anything either - I could try playing again and see if there is a stop code provided during the blue screen. I will also try the older nvidia driver - although I can't think that the driver is causing the hardware failure, would seem to be more of a utilization issue caused by bad programming, but I'm by no means an expert at this sort of thing.

Also, is it possible that for some reason the game is running my system too hard causing it to get too hot? And when it gets too hot it automatically shuts down?

Some drivers can cause blue screens and I have gotten them due to incompatabilites with my graphics card (you have an older card using a new driver). Do you see this behavior in any other games? Sytems that suffer from overheating usually see the graphics (during game play) lock up or go into 'slow motion'. Make sure that you uninstall your display dirver and reboot before installing the new one.

If you see a Blue Screen, try to read it, it should tell you the cause. Write down the stop code (something like - 0x00 blah blah)

I don't think it is running too hard - you can hit ctrl-alt-del during game play to bring up your task manager, from there go to the 'performance' tab check your cpu usage. I have seen this game max out 4 cores on my AMD 965, but I have never had a shutdown unless I was messing with the toolset.

Since updating to the new Nvidia drivers (which I believe was around the time I bought this game), I have not played any other games so I don't know if it is DAO specific. That said, after I went back to the 185.85 driver as you suggested I played for around 1.5 hours tonight without any blue screen crashes. As I was playing I looked at task manager and found that my CPU was at 100% usage (not sure if this is OK or not, but it didnt crash) and my memory usage was at 56% with 1.5GB of the 4.0GB cached and 1.8GB Available - all of this while not in combat.

So for now it seems that the problem was indeed the new nvidia driver and its interaction with the game / Win7 64. I will let you know if I start experiencing anymore crashes. Thanks very much for your help.

Great news. Thanks for posting a follow-up.
