Hi everyone, I'm new to baldur's gate, and I recently ran into a certain group of vampires who always come out of nowhere in the city chasing after a guy. I am a paladin so I want to save the guy, but when the dialog ends all my characters are almost instantly level drained to level 1.
I really want to like this game but it's so cheap to be level drained like this, and I'm considering just giving up. anyone have any tips for me? i cant avoid the event because I cant get out of the city without it popping up.

This probably belongs in the spoiler forum, but there are two items in SoA that immediately come to mind that provide Negative Plane Protection and a divine spell of the same name available to Clerics. (NPP provides immunity to level drain.) There are also weapons (and spells) that are especially effective against undead (including vamps). I can't really say more than that in this forum, but at this stage of your game, you may not have the ability (tools, spells, etc.) to save the guy.

They only attack at night so you can rest at an inn and travel during the day.
As the game progresses you will find items or pick up new spells to help against vampires. Higher levels together with better armour will also help, and if you can get them to focus on your least-affected party member that will also give you longer to deal with them.

Undead Hunter is a Paladin who is always immune to level drain. If you have one send him forward ahead of the party.
