I would prefer a 'cloth map' type of thing. Maybe the background (edges around the map) could be a wood table, making it look like a map the Inquisitor is looking at in his castle.
Other than that I like DAO's less stylized map.
Which Map System Would You Prefer?

A 3d map like in Skyrim, with colored symbols.

None. Kick it old school with pencil and graph paper to cater to the fine citizens of the rpgcodex forums even though they'll still hate on it regardless of whether or not they actually played the game.
Oh, and give me my cloth math. I want something that actually resembles cloth this time around (thats right Skyrim, I'm looking at you...don't you walk away from me like that!).

How different are they? The DAO one shows blood rails to hide load times, the DA2 one doesn't and has a tabbed view (which allows for a day/night kind of deal). Both of them can handle the player getting to another map than they intended, it's just not used as much in DA2 as in DAO - bring Fenris around in act2 outside of Kirkwall and you'll see.

Whatever works best for the story and game mechanics? I mean really, how on earth can it possibly matter? The DAO map had nice little random encounters and (sort of) showed the progress of the Blight, which was nice. The DA2 map allowed night/day switching without faffing with silly "wait 12 hours" functions... both have their pros and cons, I imagine we'll see something similar to both.TristanHawke wrote...
DA:O Map or DA2 map?
