I'm on a laptop with a 1.83 GHz Intel Dual Core 2 processor, 2.0 GB of RAM, and an NVIDIA GeForce 8600M video card.  It's decent enough, though has heat issues sometimes.  Anyways.

I get this weird lag at certain points that make mages unplayable.  They first appear in the zombie attack in Redcliff.  My mage will cast... and nothing.  I'll tell them to cast, the cast animation will play... and nothing.  Then a few (sometimes several) seconds later, the spell animation will finally fire off on the target.  Then maybe a second later it'll take effect.  This can be up to a ten second delay, during which the enemy is free to run about and chop my mage to pieces.  I've died waiting for spells to fire.  This includes damage from weapons and healing potions.  Leliana drank my enitre potion supply in about ten seconds because they were taking so long to fire off and the cooldown doesn't start until the effect has.

This is especially dangerous with fireballs.  I'll fire a fireball off.  It'll eventually cast and lazily meander towards the spot on the ground I told it too.  During the time, the AI has noticed an AOE is coming their way and ran off.  So when the explosion finally happens, nobody's there.  Alternatively, it explodes... and several seconds later random darkspawn/undead go flying.

This also applies to weapons.  In Denerim, I'd swing my sword, the darkspawn would run several paces, even take a couple swings, and then die.  So often I'd be wasting two or three attacks on dead guys.

The really obnoxious thing is after Redcliff, the bug sticks around.  I start running into it in random encounters.  It seems to effect spells with animations more than others.  Fireball is the worst offender, while heal works a bit better.  But it's very frustrating and makes mages nearly worthless in later battles.

All of this is happening while frame rate jumps all over the place.  I have to set the game to easy so I'm not killed by dead darkspawn.  See, they're not affected by this bug.  They can chop away even after they've been hit several times, because the damage hasn't kicked in yet.

Any suggestions on this?  Is there some setting I need to adjust to reduce the lag and improve framerates?

Get a stronger computer? I tend to have a slower computer: so I have a similar, weaker, problem with lag at those points.

It's not so much "lag" like low frame rates. Not always. Though there's a couple nasty little spots where the game just crawls, like just before the stairs leading up to the Tower of Ishal. Often framerate is fine, but effects are on a ten second delay.

Weird thing is, it's inconsistant too. In the Deep Roads on the bridge crawling with darkspawn, regular speed. No problem. Must've been at least a dozen, if not more, mulling about. But it gets crushing in Denerim and Redcliffe. Now that I think about it, it seems to be the worst in areas where the AI gets reinforcements at a spawn point(s), like in the Siege of Redcliffe and the Battle of Denerim. Maybe a connection there?

I guess that those parts of the game require alot of power to run. Since, I only lagged in those parts aswell.

Your machine is a bit bottom end for this game. Make sure AA is turned off and all graphic/vid settings are low or off. Maybe run in 800x600 too. Experiment a bit. You're not going to miss much running like that, not really. The terrain textures are nothing to rave about anyway (although the NPC detail is excellent). Have you got the latest drivers for your GPU?.
