Shep didn't win the war alone. Like in Ender's saga, there was a shadow behind him/her that was the alternative if shep failed...
In the shadows, there was lots of stories, war stories, people who believed he was right and fought their own battle.
This is meant to be another game/s continuing the ME plot, using a simultaneous story o reach ME point saving the galaxy.
My personal idea for mass effect 4:
-Origins: Choose your race, and fight. Each race has his own beggining and story. (Even choose the new Geth class: Geth Replicant, a humanized infiltrator based on Legion' Legacy design)
-Main races available: Human, turian, asari, salarian, drell, krogan, geth replicant.
-When: After the ME2 first event: you know about shep death, and start to investigate what is behind this.
-The game is a travel between ME2-3, investigating what happened and why is sheppard figting for.
-Like hawke story on ME2, ME4 reveals the story of a main character who travels towards the ME Trilogy events in order to defeat the reapers, and is even rejected by his own people for doing such a crazy thing.
-Interaction with some of ME characters in certain point of the story. Illusive man's minions, crew members...
-Explore all unseen sub-plots left behind on ME3.
-Using main plots of ME3 legend save.
-Stop the reapers: Discover their true weakness after Sheppard meets leviathans. (Perhaps Dark Energy plot). No one will believe you, but you will uncover the truth.
-In this point, I would vote for the character to discover the IT: Not IT fan for ME3 ending, but this image bring the idea to me:

-Is Sheppard (YOUR sheppard) reliable when you meet him/her? what did you decide? Are you under reaper control? You can't discover it until you arrive to the citadel and meet the new reaper avatar: The Illusive man, under direct control of the Harbinger itself. Was you decision (Control, Destroy, Synthesis, refuse) the correct one? will be your comrades a menace to sheppard attending to his previous decisions?
-New LI, stories, and roleplay. Are you in a platonic love with sheppard? have your own LI? Will you sacrifice your new character (and his own merits) in order to save Shep?
-New companions: Volus hacker, Elcor warrior, Female Drell spy...
-Drive the new assault vehicle: Mako MK II, even be at a "tank battle!"
-Customize weapons and discover new unique habilities from forgotten races that failed fighting reapers!
-Use Custom Beggining to decide what sheppard DID!
Please don't insult if you don't like it.:innocent:

Hmm very interesting indeed, However i d like this particulat period of the ME universe to be forgotten. There is enough damage done by Me3 and i think us the fans will be comparing this Me4 to Me3. This would complicate things.

No. Like ioannsidenton said, most people want to wash their hands of the current period of the ME universe. That includes a prequel or a "midiquel".
The series needs to push forward with a sequel way off in the future. New races joining galactic civilization, new technology, brand new story, characters, etc. With a sequel they have a lot more to work with to expand the universe.

With all respect, I do not understand why you say this.
Have you looked at the forums?
Are plenty of people requiring things: LIs, missions, endings, DLCs...
The people in general demands more of this period because is the one they know. I think a far future would be fine, but will be not the same Mass Effect. Is the same as KOTOR, is star wars but not star wars. They have had to link all the timing between the two periods in order to make things right, and is messy. Technology implications, civilization developments...
If you do so, for example, what will you do with quarians/geth? or with reapers, or with krogan? you extinct them? you preserve them? too many interrogants.
This "period" is not as vast as star wars one, and making heavy time jumps will kill one of the timelines, this one or the other one. Mass effect is too young to a time jump right now, I'm afraid.
Only 4 novels, 12 comics, 3 games. Very short life for a sci-fi time jump;).
Not comparable to star trek or star wars right now.
