If ME4 is to avoid being mediocre like its predecessor, there are a few things it needs to do. Here are a few things that I think ME4 needs:

1). Better dialogue

-Get rid of or at least reduce the amount of autodialogue so that it actually feels like we're in control of our PC.
-Bring back the neutral options- it was irritating in ME3 when I didn't agree with either the paragon or renegade options.

2). Better exploration & side content

-Let us explore the galaxy like we could in ME and ME2 - in ME3 exploration was completely shallow as we couldn't land on any of the new planets we discovered, we just probed them from space.
-Vehicular exploration would be good. I'd personally support a Hammerhead mkII - similar speed and manouverability but with much stronger armour and more offensive capabilities other than the main cannon.
-The planet surface levels should be somewhere in-between those of ME and ME2 - open world to a degree but not to the point where there's a generic open landscape and not too linear as in ME2. Overlord's main area is a good template.

3). New flavours need to be added to the Mass Effect universe - it needs fleshing out

-New races - ME2 and ME3 did far too little to add new races to the Mass Effect universe. ME1 gave the impression of an enormous galaxy with numerous small races (such as the many Terminus races and Turian client races), but too little was done to expand on this - ME2 (including its DLC) added 3 new NPC races while ME3 added none at all. ME4 desperately needs some new races.
-New hub worlds and environments - this was something ME2 did well. We had 4 hubs (the Citadel, Tuchanka, Illium and Omega) and we got to see the diverse ecosystem of the galaxy across the various planets that we landed on. ME1 was far more generic in its landscapes and had only one big hub (and one small one including Noveria, Feros is too small to count). We saw some interesting new environments in ME3 - Rannoch for example, but it still lacked the diversity of ME2, perhaps due to the lack of side missions/exploration content.
-New politics - please don't just recycle the krogan vs turian/salarian rivalry or the human batarian rivalry and leave it at that! ME4 needs to add some new flavours to galactic politics, introduce new races with their own rivalries and create new rivalries between the established races.

4). Make sure the soundtrack is long enough

-All the recycled music from past games in ME3 really started to grate on me.

Feel free to add your own ideas to the thread.

It needs to be multiplayer only.

Saying that, I had a lot more fun on ME3's multiplayer than I did on its disappointing singleplayer campaign.

I actually like it when they use songs from past games. Vigil is the best song ever made!

Using a piece of music briefly in homage is great (like what they did with big character moments in ME2 and 3 with Vigil). But in ME3 they reused old pieces of music for entire missions which led me to believe that the composers hadn't produced enough material for ME3.

Only the vorcha and drell originally - the yahg were added by DLC. It was a step in the right direction, but a lot more races should be added in the next installment in order to freshen up the Mass Effect universe.

I have been thinking about this for awhile, but I think one thing I would really like to see in Mass Effect 4 is that its a sequel and the first mission is an "origin" that takes about 30 to 35min and it would depend on your choice of the ending in Mass Effect 3. During this mission it will show how the major plot device of the ending if it was Synthesis/Control/Destroy malfunctioned or something happened to make it no longer work the way it was designed by either being biologically rejected (Synthesis), disappearing (Control), or rebuilt (Destroy) and that will give people the ability to have their ending still matter without a canon choice by BioWare and making it still matter.

To your points. With Dialogue I do agree that auto dialogue needs to go unless its an option that can be turned on or off, but I disagree with the neutral option for it was far worse in ME1 then ME2, but the neutral option at times was the same choice, so I don't mind having a middle choice, but I don't want it to be a false choice with having the exact same result as picking a paragon or rengade choice.

Exploration is one of those tricky things in the Mass Effect Universe for I am of the feeling that none of the games ever had it. Mass Effect 1 had driving in a straight line to the quest that was already on the map. If they can actually develop a new type of exploration I would welcome it, but if its like what is in Mass Effect 1 I would rather they skip it.

I really want the exploration back! I always loved how in ME 1 you could just jump to a random solar system and land on a planet, drive around, and investigate caves, bunkers, and colonies. You could land on a planet with a snow storm going, then 20 minutes later you could be on a world which has a red color palette because its host star was a red giant. That's the type of stuff I would love to see make a return.
