Finally gave this game a chance after hearing what an underrated classic it is, and nope, it's utter ****e. Great idea to put an unskippable cutscene before the first real fight of the game. Oh wait, I mean first THREE fights of the game. Last of which has enemies that use ranged attacks and seem to be immune to anything I do.

Great job BioWare, this is one more game I'm never going to touch again.

I've managed to play the first three fights of the game... I didn't know what the hell you're talking about. After re-reading, I do though. I'm sorry that this game has a story.

Umm, yes, Jade Empire is intended as an Action RPG, not just a martial arts combat simulator. To be honest, I found it to be quite enjoyable.

OHHHH... now I FULLY understand! The first three fights in the game have unskippable cutscenes before each fight, and you died in all of them, and thusly had to repeat the cutscenes, so you... hate... the game...? I could see how that could be a minor nuisance, but... to make you hate the game? If a minor annoyance is enough to make you hate a game, then prepare to hate 99.99% of things out there. Just saying.

I see, the game is trash because you can't learn how to play the game and adapt to different enemies. Well I'm glad you quit this early because by 25% of the way through the game your monitor/ tv screen would have a hole where you forcefully inserted your keyboard/controller.

Gave it another shot. Nothing's changed. Controls don't work half the time. I'm guessing you're supposed to dodge every attack since the "block" doesn't actually block anything, but the double-tap to dodge is really awkward, I can't control where my character goes. Heavy attack and light attack seem to be the same thing. Still no idea what the different styles do, all seems to be the same.

Total crap, no wonder BW hasn't returned to the franchise. It's a shame, I hear the morality system's cool, but I just can't get past the horrible combat. Uninstalling.

Just downloaded this game off xbox live. I still love it; reminds me of the good old days when it was KOTOR and Jade instead of ME and DA.

Quit. ****in'. Trolling.

And yes, your opinion is trash and anyone's that doesn't play enough of it to tell.
There's a big difference between "I don't LIKE it because I SUCK at it" and "This game is bad, because of these things".

Yeah, also "Baldur's Gate sucks because it's difficult and I cannot bother to play more or learn and derp derp derp". This is what this sounds like.

"Double tap dodge"? "Block doesn't actually block anything"? "Heavy and light attacks are the same"? Look homie, no offense, but I already can't take you seriously when you THINK you know what you're talking about. You're making it worse when you obviously DON'T know what you're talking about.

Honest, constructive and objective criticism is fine and good. Going "waahh, this suxxx, cannot skip cutscenes and can't bother to learn because I have ADD" is a trash opinion.

To be honest, I can see where the OP is coming from. I felt that Jade Empire had an extremely awkward combat system, the way your character handled always felt off. On the other hand I thought that it made up for its rather subpar combat with one of BioWare's better storylines and character lineups, a fresh setting, and some pretty fun quests.

So my advice to the OP, assuming they ever visit this forum again, is to stick with it... lower the difficulty if need be. I wasn't impressed with Jade Empire at first myself, but once the plot picked up it became a very enjoyable experience.

well the fact that I have no idea how to play the game after the tutorial should indicate that the game is pretty crappy.

For example, I get that there are differences in the styles, but I have no idea what they are because the game doesn't EXPLAIN anything. One style adds chi/ki to your attacks? What the hell does that do? I can't use it anyway because I need all my ki for healing.

Dodge system is far too awkward for something that's supposed to be your main method of staying alive. Block is useless because it just makes the enemy do a heavy attack, which I would dodge if I were able, but I'm not, so hey, still crappy. Enemies attack far too quickly to react, and I have a miserable collection of hit points even though I'm supposed to be the heavy class, so I end up dying no matter what I do. After wasting time watching those dudes get killed by cannon fire again.

Well, I can't play any more of it, can I? Because the combat system is broken.

Baldur's Gate was based on D&D, and was therefore naturally intuitive, even when you don't know exactly what you're doing you are given enough clues to figure it out. Not so with Jade Empire. It's a completely alien gameplay system and there's no way to understand how it works except mindless trial and error. Utter crap. Don't even try to compare this swill to BG.

You learn the game by playing and yes, trial and error. It's called learning HOW to play.

I haven't played Jade Empire for a while so I might be wrong. Chi attacks make you do more damage with your combat style for a while but drain your Chi/Magic bar. Chi slowly regenerates and you can use your companions (or one of them?) to regenerate it even faster.

Block is not useless. When you block, the enemy stops his flurry of attacks and telegraphs to you that he is about to do a power attack. Those take some time to charge, leaving them exposed for you to counter-attack or dodge, or jump OVER them (Forward and jump, I believe).

For enemies that attack too quickly, you block or use Focus. Focus makes you go in slow motion giving you plenty of time to react. If you have crappy HP and you feel slow, then pick a character that is balanced or make your characters more balanced on level up or with items.

All these things, are called tactics and adaptability. You act and react to what enemies do and adjust.

If I'm not mistaken, there are descriptions in the menus of what each thing does and there's the manual or the Jade Empire wiki. Here: jadeempire.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page

Not broken. I got the hang of it quite fast and didn't die many times. Mostly far later when things got harder or on bosses.

Actually, BG was based on AD&D. I'm not being a smartass or an elitist here. My point is that ADnD is the exact opposite of intuitiveness. What clues? Many things are not displayed in the menus and the manual is full of errors and mistakes.

At least DnD 3.0/3.5 is FAR more intuitive. 10 is base, every 2 points you get a bonus, you can multiclass when you want, you have 3 main saves based on your attributes etc.

And about being intuitive:
-What is THAC0?
-What is half an attack? (I still haven't figured this out and I have finished the trilogy and Icewind Dale)
-Why is my Armor class going down?
-Why don't I get any bonuses for average STR?
-What is Dual-class and what is Multiclass? Why do humans can only do the first one?
-Why can't some races pick a class? (Dwarven Mages, Elven Rangers/Druids)
-Why did my weapon break?
-Why do I get less HP after level ~10?
-Why do Warrior classes get more HP for 16+ Con and others don't?
-Why did my evil companions leave?
-Why am I constantly hunted with low-reputation?
-Where the hell does it say what each race gets for bonuses? (No in game information, maybe the manuals do)
-Why did my character got chunked? Can I bring them back?
-Why is it game over when your main char dies?
-What is 18/50 Strength? And what is 18/00? Which is better?
-Why are my companions running away with my low-charisma character?
-What are saves?

How is that intuitive for someone that just got started with Baldur's Gate and knows nothing about (A)DnD?
It took me some weeks or months or learn about the 3.0 rules after playing NwN1 and it took me about half as much to figure out the ADnD stuff on my own. And I still miss some information. I finished BG1 and I still didn't know about lots of the above and more.

It didn't take long to figure out stuff about Jade Empire.
