Simple question. Who accrues hostility/threat fastest, Shale with Stoneskin fully upgraded, Threaten, and Taunt, or a Warrior with Threaten, Taunt, and massive armor? Anybody know?

Taunt. Instant hostility to everyone in range.

yeah but Taunt doesn't ALWAYS work.....

I have Wynne, Morrigan, and Me(Mage group) with alistar on me and yet the opponent goes rushing towards wither me or Morrigan(because we are dps) instead of alistar.

I would say Warrior with the Reaver's Frightening Appearance ability.

Frightening Appearance with Threaten and the Reaver damage aura active. The best threat making combinaton of abilities. Doing this with your warrior and you will hardly ever have to use taunt.

Thanks a lot, guys. I'll definitely consider taking the Reaver option.

If I go with Champion, however, who earns hostility faster, a fully upgraded Shale or fully upgraded Alistair/Loghain?

I have had much better luck with Shale as a tank. Stone Roar is very useful, as is the Quake ability he gets in DPS mode. He also seems to have higher "natural" threat generation than Alistair or Loghain, perhaps because he has a very high innate armor value.

Used properly, Shale is in fact the most powerful party member you can get, able to fill a variety of roles at the drop of a hat.

Plus.. ya know... it's Shale, and the one off sarcastic commentary is great.  It's like having a badass Bea Arthur in your party, only made of rock.  :D

Thanks for the replies, all. I think I've got enough info to draw some conclusions. I'll probably tote Shale around most often, thanks partially to jmp0505's hilarious interpretation of Shale's character. She seems to lack the ability to become completely immune to knockdowns, though, so I worry about her ability to take on dragons. Thoughts on this?

Depends on how strong her skills are. I had Shale in my party when fighting the High Dragon in Haven and she did get knocked down or staggered on occasion but not as much as Alistair or my rogue character.  But I think if you flip him to stoneheart, and have that skill line filled out - although she can't deal damage iirc, she's kinda immovable. Not totally sure though, you might have to experiment.

I do really enjoy having her along for that last leg of the Orzammer quest, in the Deep Trenches/Anvil of the Void.

That's true. She probably can't be knocked down while in buffing mode. I wonder if she could hold threat on a dragon while in buffing mode with Threaten active.

Note that some attacks like Overpower increase your threat too. I've found that should Taunt fail, I can use some S/S skills to gain threat.

As a side note, dual wield dagger rogues generate insane amounts of threat. Needs the reduce threat boots to not pull from the tank.

I'm sure you're right, tranj, but I wouldn't trust a Rogue to tank without a monster Dexterity stat. And, unfortunately, I like to give Cunning some attention, too.

Totally... and I need to break myself of my bad habit of referring to Shale as "he".  It's kinda funny how much of her dialogue and personality seems to "click" somehow when you find out she's a woman.  She really has the Bea Arthur/Mae West/Tallulah Bankhead thing going on. :D

Actually Stoneheart is the Tank/Threaten stance and Shale is perfectly able to move and attack in that stance.
Plus she draws aggro like crazy in that mode (especially if she also Taunts). And the Regeneration Explosion Talent is awesome!

I never seem to have trouble on  my dual wield dagger/dagger cunning rogue with shale as the tank, not even using cadash stompers.  Between combat stealth and taunt I can't imagine how a well played party would ever have trouble with threat management.
