The above is how I currently set up my desktop. To the right are all tabs except properties. To the left properties. That way anything I select shows its properties straight off. The maximises my window for working on an area or script.

How else does everyone set this up? Am I missing any good tricks for maximising the workspace in the middle of the screen?

Cheers,

PJ

My desktop is covered in stickers, toys, plastic jewellery ( my daughter thinks I need them ), bits of paper and half eaten pens ( toolset working debris ) along with a printer that has four diaries ( for work that I will one day file away ) and a laptop balanced on top. Then there's a lot of leads a joystick some lovely pink speakers, a couple of snow globes ( one with windsurfers in that leaks ) some faded glowing armbands, grumpy the dwarf toy an empty rapunzel honey peach glittery bubble bath bottle and a peacock feather.

So yes I need help getting more space too and that's probably why I very rarely use my PC and get the laptop off the wobbly pile on top of the printer and run away from the bomb sight.

But seriously I have properties, conversations, scripts and areas on the left, blueprints, tiles and terrain on the right and area contents at the bottom. Campaign conversations and scripts disappeared ages ago I can't be bothered with bringing them back and use the open conv/script feature and export the conversation file straight in the campaign if it's going to cross modules.

As for space I do my "creating" on a laptop in front of the tv so what you have in your screenshot looks like acres of room to me as half my windows are shrunk to the bare minimum. The only time I ever fire up my PC with NWN2 is for testng so I can see all the details, stick the graphics on full and enjoy roaming around what I've made for what seems to be the first time again.

I have a dual monitor setup with a 20 inch widescreen, and a 19inch regular aspect. Dual monitors are great, all the property stuff sits on my second screen and I have a maximum view of the things I'm working on.

Lol. If you click on that screenshot you can blow it up, it's the full resolution of my monitors.

Originally I only had the 20 inch monitor. I picked up a 15 inch monitor from work for $25, they were selling them to employees since they were being replaced. Even that worked really well since the second window was more than large enough for the toolset window of properties, areas, etc. Later I was able to get a 19 inch monitor for cheap.

Right now you can buy a 23 inch non crappy brand monitor from Newegg for $150 after $20 rebate, with free shipping. Assuming your video card supports dual monitor, combine with your existing monitor. Of course you need the space for it, and the wife acceptance factor for dual monitors is generally low. :P

Wife acceptance factor I like that, mine gave up whingeing ages ago and accepted her husband was mad but at least wasn't in the pub, I even gave her a part in Serene and modelled the main baddies on people she hated what more could she want ! That's why I prefer a laptop so I'm still with everybody rather than staring at a screen in the corner somewhere.

I wouldn't mind one of those touch screen wall see through things they have on some of the CSI programmes though.

My toolset like many others.  Using a pair of 22" widescreens.  My wife is a gamer so I have no problems getting upgrades LOL.  She's already bought me a pair of 27" widescreen samsungs but I'm not allowed to have them till Dec 25 :(

Separate properties window? Good idea, I'm adopting that. :-)

I use a separte properties window, or at least I have done for a week or two and it makes a huge difference to the ease of working.

I am halfway through setting up a second screen, I am at the bit where I convince my wife to give me her monitor and she sticks with her laptop.

Wish me luck I'm going in gentlemen :)

Now I need a new monitor for christmas and some of my wifes deskspace. Any thoughs on which order I should approach those.

That said, this has answered my original question on making the workspace bigger as it cannot get any bigger than this.

Having good fun hearing about your setups though if anyone wants to share how they work.

The question is - how long will he retain ownership of them?

We are currently negotiating. It appears the monitor was not the last finacial outlay associated with this upgrade.Posted Image

Ah well! Dual monitors is realy great I'm wondering at the moment if I can have the game paying on one and the toolset on the other ...

Does anyone else work on a laptop, by the way? I have considered putting the convo app on my work laptop for traveling.

Assuming your computer can handle it, you can. But not much point since you can't live edit the module. Watching sports in the second window while doing boring ingame testing is what I do.

I only have a laptop these days. After years of lugging home big heavy boxes I finally decided to give one of these new-fangled devices a go. It's got a decent graphics card, so it seems to handle any game I throw at it.

I use it with a monitor, keyboard and speakers plugged in though. It's a 'laptop' in theory only.

As I said before I only ever use a PC for the final testing and sometimes have my laptop running the toolset at the same time for corrections just to save on writing them down ( a dual monitor moment, no revolving chair to spin from one to the other though). I actually made Serene on a laptop that wasn't even suppposed to be capable of running NWN2 so I had to put every setting on the lowest possible and update it's ram to 1GB !

The only problem with a laptop is the problem that this post started off being about as you do run out of space and conversations can get a bit difficult when they get too long ( as each new line moves a little bit to the right as you go along) and you can't see the colour of the node or where to link to and have to use the box in the right corner to see which line it is or count the blank spaces. One thing that you can do is close the conversation and reopen it which seems to shove it over a bit so you can see it.

I don't know what the conversation app is but you're probably better off sticking the whole of NWN2 on your laptop and just opening the toolset as normal if you want to write whilst travelling. Then just export the whole lot onto a memory device and import it using the toolset as normal, that way you could also do mundane stuff like dressing peasants etc.

That might work better Tsongo, Certainly conversations are (were) the biggest pain as you say. Especially as I write the longer ones in excel first (so I can keep and pseudo structure and the right colours) that way I get simple spelling and grammar and I can copy them over afterwards. Hving excel and the toolset up at the same time gets pretty congested.

Flamewind conversation editor. http://nwvault.ign.c...ls.detail&id=33

Has a standalone version so you can write wherever and then export, and has a plugin so you can import what you wrote into the toolset. No more copy/paste line by line. It supports links in the conversation, so you can loop back to earlier lines, and also allows you to test the conversation inside the editor. The only things it doesn't do are you can't assign all the script actions etc.

That's the one. It does not have a spell checker iirc either, none the less it's a good toy.

My daughter's taken it so sorry there's not much chance of that and the end of my xmas present. Tell you what though it's a pretty good film and the scenery makes you wish you could have a toolset capable of such things ! Word of warning though there's a bad bear and he's a bit scary for smalll children and my daughter couldn't watch when he was around and ran off to hide herself. But she still claimed the DVD !

Makes a change to talk about a film on this forum.. Hope you had a good xmas and happy new year.
