Ok, so how Shep survives shooting the tanks? I can do that.
*edit This is turning out a bit bigger than my intended joke about Tali's emergency induction port so I'll probably throw it over to fan creations later. But I'll put it here for now.
Shepard groaned as the ringing in his ears quietened to a dull thudding. He looked up through the haze that remained from the explosion, his pistol carried away by the blast and saw holes in the sides of the tanks where his shots had caused the pressure inside to rupture outward and away from him.
He blinked, his vision blurring as he fought to focus. He had been so angry that he had simply spent the thermal clip on the tanks. Shot after shot fired again and again in sheer rage at the Catalyst's cold, sickening logic. He hadn't focused his aim at all. Simply discharging rounds as fast as he could pull the trigger. In hindsight, that had saved him. Had he been lucid he would have planted each round square in the centre that faced towards him and the explosion would have caught him square on. As it was, he had been engaulfed in the fire, but avoided the worst of the directed blowback.
He grimaced as he fought his way to his knee's and through the ringing, he heard an insistant beeping. he looked down at what remained of his armour and saw his medigel controller unit faintly pulsing a blue light at him. He had thought it had been knocked out when Harbinger attacked him back on Earth. Reasoning that the explosion of the tanks must have jarred something back into working shape he hit the button on the unit and immediately felt the cool wave of his internal medigel dispenser seal his wounds and bring his view of the world back into focus.
He also noticed then that floor he was kneeling on was shaking. He looked up at the crucible and saw it was beginning to glow. He didn't need Tali around to tell him something else was about to explode and he was right underneath it.
"Huh". He muttered struggling to his feet. "There isn't enough medigel in the galaxy to get through that in one piece".
Looking around, he mentally ticked off his options as he lifted a hand to toggle his ear piece. It didn't even hiss static.
"Normandy?" He had to try, even as he moved to the remains of the tanks. "Normandy this is Shepard. I need evac".
The ground shook more violently as the crucible's glow intensified. Looking over the tanks he saw the explosion had cleared a hole beneath them, through which he looked down and saw the Earth under him. An arm of the Citadel partially obscuring his view. He climbed over to a tank that, though ruptured, still looked in good condition. Climbing up he looked at the brackets holding it in place and saw they were warped. Grabbing the top he maneuvered himself in place so he could grip the top of the tank and push against it's supporting pylon. Slowly the brackets groaned as they buckled under the pressure.
"Normandy!" He said through gritted teeth as the crucible, the citadel and space around him seemed to turn white. "Cancel pickup! I found my own way off!"
As the brackets began their final whine of protest Shepard looked down through the hole the tank hung over. With the world fading into white light he put one last effort. And then the world turned black.
The tank came loose and dropped like a stone through the hole leading to Earth and space. High in Earth's orbit Shepard dimly remembered that it would take over 10 minutes to hit the Earth from orbit. Then all thought evaporated as he was hanging on for dear life as the tank he rode picked up speed through his decent.
From behind him he felt, rather than saw, a wave of energy pass nearby. His skin prickling as a sensation that caused his body to go numb washed over him. He gripped tighter in response as if the hunk of metal he was falling with was a line line. Then just as fast as the feeling came, it went. And as it did a burst of fire erupted from the citadel arm. Explosion's ripped through the structure and it seemed as if all the tonnes of welded metal seemed to bend. He twisted his head sideways, looking up at the ring section. The arm had seperated! It was now falling away at an ever increasing angle and he guaged that he and his tank would fall right into it!
He could see the ruined spires of the upper habitatations and as he watched. He saw emergency evacuation modules begin to eject themselves from the structures.
There are still people there! He realised in horrer. Then the spires seem to reach out for him and he had his own worries.
