IF he's alive. Then again you can always pull the "magic" card and say he survived.
If he's dead, let him stay dead. However I would like to see him come back in the playthroughs where I spared his life. He's a really amusing NPC!

No! That is not a question and if it be an answer. It be an answer to a question I have not asked.

Can he be killed? I mean I remember there was the option to pull out the murder knife and shank him but if you did it turns out to be an illusion and he just appears in another spot.

Small child wants her teddy bear back? Lick'em.
Old templar wants you to fulfill his dying wish? Lick'em.
Darkspawn about to kill you? Lick'em.
Also, Swag Points.
You got... Morrigan's eyeshadow! +50 Swag!

So, if the Mad Hermit does reappear, is actually an old mage of yore, and wanders into the Grand Cathedral, I would hope that some sort of spectacular chaos would erupt.

Ask a question and you'll get a question, but give an answer and you will recieve the same.

I've long wondered if the Mad Hermit is actually Aldenon.

Aldenon was a powerful mage who befriended King Calenhad (prior to his ascent to the throne) and become his chief advisor. He disappeared after leading a rebellion of sorts against the Circle Tower of Ferelden.
