One of the most heartwrenching sights to me is a man crying.    I want to see a man in Thedas CRY tears of despair, or CRY tears of joy.  Even better if he is a LI.   I want to see graphics of tears rolling down their face.  I want to hear sobbing mothers and see their faces contort in grief as their mage children are taken away from them by templars.  Please indulge me and give us some pure outward expression of feeling.  Even a closeup of tears-  the person I would be most amazed to see cry in Dragonage?  Flemeth.  I don't know if that is possible.  Please make it happen!  Not just the sound of crying- I want to SEE it.

Hmmm.

A crying drunk Alistair would make for a nice BSN avatar. Seriously though, I 'd love dialogue options to have the PC cry when it's appropriate.

Crying is hard to get right with human actors.

I think one of game's problems with crying is that they're basing their shots off movies and television. They're doing those close shots of people's emotive faces. All that does is show off the gap between their creations and real human expression.

Tears, skin texture, and facial expressions don't look 'right' when we do a close up of a computer generated face crying.

It might be better to do what theater does use total body language to convey grief.

We're still seeing faces here, but they're part of the larger image.

I would support this with the following caveats:

If a male, NPC character cries, male PC's gets three options -

1. The nice option is to awkwardly pat the NPC on the shoulder, mumble something inarticulate and then walk away looking extremely uncomfortable. If possible, find and drink large quantities of beer immediately.

2. The sarcastic option is to call the NPC "A whiny Sissy-boy" tell him to "man up, dude" and then give an affectionate but staggering punch in the shoulder. Offer to buy the NPC enough beer to make him forget about whatever caused the tears in the first place.

3. The mean option is to give the NPC an atomic wedgie, then a swirly, while screaming loudly in his ear about the NPC's lack of testosterone and male genitalia. Meanwhile, the other male companions stand around laughing uproariously. The NPC will then be immediately kicked out of the party, his weapons confiscated and the next time we see him he is being mugged by grannies. Then all male party members must immediately drink massive quantities of beer and discuss legendary wedgies they have seen.

I mean, I realize this is fantasy and all, but a little realism wouldn't hurt. After all, this is pretty much how we handled this situation in basic training...

Tongue firmly in cheek... I don't really like beer.

I find the OP's amount of enthusiasm to be rather disturbing if truth be told.

That's a strangely specific request. I would like to see a woman eating a cinnamon roll in the rain.

The single manly tear ?
Or the whole crying a river with rolling on the floor , big tears all red in the face etc...?
The few tears I saw in video game weren't so good , like some blue slimey stuff rolling down a character cheeks.

I have no problem with a character crying ,well if it's done well obviously.
But it's like asking for a character laughing , you don't see them really laugh , it's hard to make it look real.

I agree with Maria Caliban, close up shot of the face will probably look ridiculous (Is he crying, is he constipated?)
Body language has better chance , something like character let himself fall to the floor , and you can see his body agitated by sobs.

Crying can be hard, even for some actors! How will a pixel cope!
If any character cries it will probably be my PC, from being let down by his/her companions or just from the weight of everything he/she has to go through!

Only if I can lick the NPCs' tears off their faces.

Heh, I've been thinking about this too. Well, not the male NPC in particular, but the lack of tears in DA. I certainly expected Leandra to cry when Carver/Bethany died. I assumed tears were to difficult to do in the game, but then I played Mass Effect, and what did I see? Tears! NPC's crying and having tears stream down their cheeks! Sure, it didn't look 100% realistic, but it was good enough in my opinion. I don't know why Bioware did not include the same tear thing in DA. They did use ME sound effects...

Making the PC cry is a more dangerous thing, I think. Undoubtedly you get angry people exclaiming "MY character would never cry because of that! MY PC doesn't care that X died!" I've seen plenty of those comments on Shepard's sad face when he/she saw the shuttle with the young boy blow up. It's beyond me how anybody could not feel sad about that, but apparently there are people who believe otherwise.

So...a single tear is a "manly" tear? Huh...who knew that stoicism was a quality possessed only by the menfolk. <_<

I'm all for seeing emotional responses to certain situations, provided that it suits the character. But I think that grief, rage, anguish, etc. are often best conveyed, game-wise, by what is said, and how it is said. Or perhaps in action - someone walking away stiffly. There are so many other cues to indicate the emotion, and/or the reaction, without needed to use tears themselves.

I don't care if there are actual tears or not but I really would like to see a lot more actual grief or crying or something during tragic moments. They wanted to make the game more cinematic so lets see what cinematics can actually do.

Things would have to be pretty darn extreme for Flemeth to be crying. I definitely support this, if nothing else just because I imagine the scene in general would have to be incredibly strong to get her to that point.

Only if it's not the PC though or at least you get a chance to opt out. The whole forced emotion thing didn't really work for me in ME3.

This is an excellent suggestion.  I found the tears that I saw in ME2 to be really weird-looking and not work all that well, I'd prefer that they not specifically try to introduce them into DA3.

I have no problem, however, if they make an effort to make people look properly teary-eyed at appropriate times, but I think it'd be better to keep the facial expressions subtle enough that if they don't fully work, they aren't forced into your awareness.  So, wet eyes + grieving expression + grieving body language = good.  Trails of weird milky-white stuff running down their face = not so good.

I agree that it would be amazing to see not just other NPCs crying, but the PC having the ability to cry at certain events or dialogue. If not during a cutscene/cinematic, it could be a reaction to or part of dialogue options (i.e. I am breaking up with you, or you are going to jail, or how dare you betray me)(insert cry here). Agreed that there were many excellent man-cry scenes in LOTR, and that is part of why the series had such an impact! Arwen's tears was another great scene. I know the voice actors used so far in DA have the capability to convey this emotion. So, if streaming tears are not an option, then the hand covering the face while sobbing is a good alternative.

So, true, if we can't cry in real life, we can at least cry in an RPG!
